To compete with the small BMW trail displayed on the official site "from 10,200 euros", Triumph is therefore launching a "small" Tiger. Using the same subterfuge as their German colleagues, the English have in fact disguised their "big" engine under a reduced name….
The Tiger 850 Sport resumes well the 3-cylinder 888 cc inaugurated last year on the 900 range (GT, GT Low and GT Pro, Rally and Rally Pro) but in a new configuration which moderates the power by 11.2 horsepower. maxi and 5 newton-meters maximum torque (read the technical sheet below) to give it a sporty character – always! – but courteous.
With an electronic "Ryde-by-wire" accelerator, the 850 Sport allows the pilot to further temper his machine by engaging a second "Rain" mode, more careful than the "Road". Paradoxically, the "Sport" mode disappears from the selection … One line of code less in the box for a few hundred euros less on the invoice: "deal" ?
The disappearance of the "Off-Road" mode seems more logical: this new Tiger is mainly intended for road use, although Triumph has deliberately chosen to keep the front wheel of 19 inches and to fit their new machine with Michelin Anakee tires on the program. "80% road and 20% off-road".
"The Tiger 850 Sport had to be at ease on wet and dry roads, and to be able to take small paths", justifies the manufacturer who renewed the chassis of the Tiger 900 GT. A simple, effective method … and less expensive for the brand as well as for its customers !
The braking remains worthy of that of a Superbike (Brembo Stylema calipers at the front!) While the Marzocchi suspensions retain their large deflections (180 and 170 mm) in order to offer great comfort on the road … would not equal a lower Sprint 850 ST or GT ?!
“One of the objectives of this Tiger 850 Sport is indeed to make you travel far, without fatigue,” Triumph replied to MNC. More comfortable and more reassuring in an urban environment (offering better peripheral vision in particular), the road trail has undoubtedly killed the Sport GT. Even at Triumph !
To facilitate its access to small riders, the Tiger 850 Sport retains the adjustable saddle (810 or 830 mm) and will soon receive a low saddle (-20 mm on the 900). The pilot can also adjust the inclination of the handlebars (with tools) and raise – then lower, raise a little, etc. – his bubble by 50 mm (manually).
To legitimize the more "Premium" status of the 900s, Triumph installed a 5-inch screen instead of 7 on its 850. But it remains fully colored and directly controlled from the handlebars. An electrical outlet is also fitted as standard, but "not a USB type because the current models are not as" water-proof "as the cigarette lighter types," Triumph told a somewhat skeptical Motorcycle Journal on the Net….
MNC is not really convinced either when Triumph tells him that the center stand is only offered as an option "because if some users actually use a central to maintain their chain, others use a workshop stand". .. and install it on the small luggage rack on their next trips, "really" ?!
Two kilograms lighter than the 900 GT, the Tiger 850 Sport is above all two … thousand euros cheaper (!) Whether you choose it in blue or red. However, it is not just BMW that sells – a lot – mid-engine trails. In France, Kawasaki and Suzuki in particular are very successful with their Versys and V-Strom … 650, offered just above 8000 euros! Would Triumph have hesitated between this Tiger 850 (bridle in 35 kW for A2 licenses) and a more affordable 660? ?
“The trails you cite are smaller than the bike we imagined,” replies Steve Sargent, chief product officer at Triumph, “and we won’t speculate further on potential new Tigers …” that would be destined for even younger or less fortunate bikers? "Wait and see"…
