Ouch! The switch reinforcement on the Sidi is designed in a modern way, but exerts selective pressure on the toe.

Highly priced and almost suitable for a moon trip

Armstrong and Aldrin were the first on the moon with Apollo 11. So far secret: MOTORRAD also sent a crew. The mission: to check the suitability of top touring boots. The nine noble motorcycle boots also had to prove themselves on the road and in the laboratory. Here is the test report:

Thorsten Dentges

October 24, 2013

To get to the moon, it would take about five months at a speed of 100 km / h without breaks. As it is well known that there are not many gas stations on the way there, there are probably only a few motorcyclists who favor this travel destination. And even on Mother Earth, even die-hard touring riders needed many years for a distance of a good 400,000 kilometers – that is how far it is to the moon – before the speedometer shows this number.

Well, classic motorcycle tours, like a trip to the North Cape and back, extend for more than 5000 kilometers, and depending on how much they sit, some crazy people cover this distance in just a few days. For everyone who has not yet been to the North Cape: There is not much more to see there than on the moon, primarily stones and wasteland in all its facets. And it is usually freezing cold there – and, unlike on the moon, also wet. But well, if the urge to explore and marathon touring should still be excessive, have fun, have a good trip!

But then please perfectly equipped. The feet in particular get cold quickly, especially when water finds its way there. In addition to gloves, boots are the biggest weaknesses for touring riders, so it is worth investing in the best material here. Inexpensive waterproof touring kicks are available from around 80 euros, the middle class is around 150 euros.

Since the outside of the boots is often very similar, i.e. all of them are the same at first glance, not a few motorcyclists find spending too much money on boots superfluous. More than 200 euros for a pair of bottles, more than 300 euros? The air is already thin like in the stratosphere.

Touring boots for over 100,000 kilometers?

But there is a comparatively large selection in this price range. MOTORRAD asked nine different suppliers to submit a premium model for comparison. With the Vanucci house brand, Louis also has a suitable representative in its range, but it is expiring this year. Doesn’t matter, because according to various branch sellers he is Daytona Touring Star, which is manufactured exclusively for Louis, is the more frequently recommended choice anyway. Interesting: Especially customers who normally only make their choice after looking at the price tag can be easily won over after trying them on and making a direct comparison. This MOTORRAD test also explains why.

Daytona sent another candidate into the field, the Travel Star GTX, which has also been well known to touring drivers for years. There is feedback that this extremely robust boot has withstood mileages of well over 100,000 kilometers unimpressed – almost suitable for lunar travel. Incidentally, the boot experts manufacture at the company’s location in Eggenfelden / Bavaria, because they want to keep one hundred percent control over the quality, says Daytona.

No real losers in the test field

Bergmann Schuhproduktion GmbH in Kevelaer, which is represented with its Kaiman brand, also pursues this approach. The shoemakers with around 200 years of tradition offer motorcyclists individually adapted variants, a good thing. The off-the-shelf products are available in two basic forms, the leather from Germany is partly vegetable-tanned. But even with production in Eastern Europe, as with the other providers, top quality can and can be expected in this price league.

The test results show that the northern Italian companies Alpinestars, Dainese and Sidi, some of whom can look back on a long history of boot manufacturing, do an excellent job. And the product developers at the full-range retailers Ixs, Hein Gericke and Polo also do their job with sense and understanding. Choice of materials, fit and safety equipment – the top boots from these suppliers are first class. So there are no real losers in this test field. Hein Gericke and Kaiman just missed the mark “good” due to poor fit. Nevertheless: A trip to the North Cape is not a problem either. They probably even work on the moon.
