Carbon at a low price
After its NXR-1 and enduro carbon helmets, Louis offers the modular Nishua NFX-2 Carbon, itself an evolution of the standard NFX-2, in which it saves one hundred grams to go down to 1450 grams announced (+/- 50 gr, in fact 1530 gr. checked on an electronic scale).
With this NFX-2 Carbon, Nishua goes up a notch in terms of quality with this noble and above all light material. A modular is generally heavier than an integral and all the more so when it has a sun visor which comes at a price in terms of weight. With its 1530 grams, we end up with a helmet weighing little more than a standard full face..
Discovery
Carbon provides above all a nice exterior finish, which is well complemented on the inside by a finish going up to the embroidery of the logo of the mark on the interior part..
If Nishua is the equipment manufacturer’s own brand, we find all the standards of good quality helmets with an antiallergic Coolmax interior and promoting thermal regulation. Helmets have evolved well in recent years and the NFX-2 has a removable interior and therefore washable both in terms of the cheek pads and the lining…
On the ventilation side, there are openings at both the chin and the forehead, completed by a rear extractor.
The little extra is based on the nose cover and especially the anti-swirl bib.
Finally, the clear screen is predisposed Pinlock. As for the integrated sun visor, it offers a tinted visor.
Note that the helmet is predisposed to the use of the Cardo Freecom 1, 2 and 4 and Sena SMH10R, 3S-W and 3S-WB communication systems..
Finally, made from two caps, the small sizes end up at a normal size envelope and not huge like some low-end helmets.
Getting started
The helmet is well handled and difficult to feel the difference in weight compared to a full face. the interior lining is soft and the helmet is easy to put on. The micrometric buckle is easily adjusted and is well protected by a soft velor. It is easily opened and closed when stopped, a large clonk materializing the effective closure.
It is also at the level of the mention that the quality of the plastic is a little greasy, only downside compared to the overall perceived quality of the modular as a whole.
Test
The NFX-2 fits within the standards. By this we mean that the M corresponds well to the usual sizes. Open for donning, you can keep your glasses on your head, without twisting them. It stays in place and the chin strap is easily adjusted.
The visor sits well on the sealing rubber and provides good soundproofing once on the motorcycle.
The vents are easy to handle and close and open easily, even with gloves and while driving. On the other hand, as much on some helmets, we can feel the air entering and cooling inside, we hardly have this type of sensations here, even if the helmet is rather cool when driving under the sun when it is 35. ° outside in the sun.
Whether with a bubble or without bubble, driving on the motorway is not noisy and rather in the soundproofing standards, making a pleasant helmet. The mud flap provides additional noise tightness at this level.
And since we are talking about the bib, it really allows to enclose the face, but also helps to touch and remove easily during regular handling. In fact, I ended up removing it, rather than having to systematically reattach it on its four pressures..
The first day of testing in the heat revealed a helmet that was comfortable to wear, except at the end of the day a slight compression on the forehead. Another tester felt pressure at the back at the foam mounts. The third tester, however, found nothing to complain about and found it particularly comfortable. As always, a helmet should fit well on your head, without over-tightening..
The sun visor is easy to handle while riding and lowers well to protect the eyes from the sun. Its precise adjustment is on the other hand complicated and we prefer to use it either on or off, that is to say placed entirely or not at all, rather than in part as on other modulars.
Conclusion
Louis offers with the NFX-2 Carbon a modular quality and particularly inexpensive for a carbon helmet, at only 299 euros. The less well-stocked portfolios can even turn to the entire brand, with the same look but with different openings, a hundred euros cheaper. But at that price, Louis also offers a special edition Schuberth C3 for the same price. Those who love the carbon look will prefer the NFX-2, others will take a closer look at the special offer for a C3 generally 150 euros more expensive.
