Norton V4 SS / RR: Superbike is coming back in 2021

Superbike is coming back in 2021

After the takeover by the Indian motorcycle manufacturer TVS, Norton is back on the gas. The V4 SS should come back onto the market in 2021. Norton previously wanted to fix numerous defects in the old machines, but these are now considered irreparable.

John Russell, the outgoing interim CEO of the British motorcycle manufacturer Norton, fans of the brand continue to hope for a comeback of the superbike V4 SS. Still in 2021 Norton the V4 SS bring it back to the start. The superbike has a 200 hp V4 engine with a displacement of 1.2 liters. There is also a single-sided swing arm and lots of noble add-on parts. From 2017, the superbike was slowly produced in a small edition. The basic price was the equivalent of around 33,000 euros. It is not known how many machines were actually delivered to customers.

V4 SS maybe even with Euro 5

Since Russell speaks of sustainability, the V4 SS could even come as a Euro 5 model, as strict requirements apply to the sale of Euro 4 models. In the worst-case scenario, the V4 SS is only intended for the comeback for the British market – then of course the Euro 5 hurdle does not apply. In addition to the SS, the V4 will also come as an RR version. Those willing to buy can already register for both machines.

New owner, old defects

In parallel to the preparations for series production of the new superbike, the new Norton owner wanted to take care of the many defects in the old, already delivered V4 models. Even the risk of fire was not excluded here. Actually, TVS shouldn’t have to worry about the problems of the old management. Norton did it anyway and planned to improve all V4 machines built under the old Norton leadership and delivered to customers.

In the course of this, the old construction was again extensively checked and numerous defects were discovered. Norton identified a total of 35 points. Norton and the British registration authority DVSA (Driver and Vehicle Standard Agency) even classify 20 of them as safety-relevant. Based on the known problems of the oil cooler line and the battery of the V4, there is engine damage due to faults in the oil circuit with the risk of falling due to blocked gears as well as an increased risk of fire for the entire motorcycle due to leaky tanks. Furthermore, at least ten unspecified areas must be improved and five points could be corrected through a service action. Norton does not provide more detailed information on the possible defects, but recommends that all owners leave the Norton V4 SS and disconnect the battery. On the part of the DVSA, 55 motorcycles are listed as affected and are being recalled because of the defective oil cooler line.

New leadership advises to complain

Against this background, Norton was now forced to withdraw the offer to improve the old machines. Repairs are not possible due to further material defects and a lack of spare parts. Norton’s new CEO Robert Hentschel had to report this in a letter to the owners of the old Norton V4 and advises a lawsuit against the old Norton Motorcycles, the original manufacturer of the defective machines. Hentschel confirmed the recently made offer to buy one of the new V4 machines at a special price, but left the pricing open. Production of the new machines is expected to start at the end of 2021.

Conclusion

After the takeover of Norton by the Indian motorcycle manufacturer TVS, things are moving forward at Norton. Now even the V4 superbike V4 SS is to be revived. Unfortunately, the defects in the V4 models manufactured by the old company cannot be remedied, and affected customers are to be offered a new V4 SS at a special price.
