Grand Prix promoter Dorna Sports unveils his first draft of the 20 MotoGP race schedule for next season. This provisional 2021 calendar remains suspended from any restrictions related to the Coronavirus. Explanations, dates and destinations.

The 2020 season is coming to an end: long live the next one which will hopefully take place under "normal" conditions, without all the restrictions on travel and reception of the public because of the Covid-19. In short, a real international competition, and not a "Spanish world championship" like this year !

This 2021 season will also mark the return of boss Marc Marquez: will the Honda official – on the mat since the opening – immediately return to his usual supremacy and ardor? Or will his double operation on the humerus and his hasty return to Jerez (Spain) leave physical or even psychological consequences that his rivals could benefit from? ?

This aspect – but also the perfs of our compatriots Fabio Quartararo and Johann Zarco! – will be closely watched during the offseason which starts February 14-16 in Malaysia. A second winter testing session will follow in Sepang from February 19 to 21, then a final official session from March 10 to 12 in Qatar (Losail). No tests in Valencia, now canceled.

Provisional MotoGP 2021 race calendar

The 2021 MotoGP season kicks off on March 28 in Qatar, a circuit that traditionally hosts the opening of MotoGP for a night race. The provisional programming will then follow a usual path with the Argentinian Grand Prix on April 11 and the Grand Prix of the Americas the following week..

Return to Europe at the beginning of May with the Spanish Grand Prix in Jerez and the French Grand Prix, scheduled for May 14 to 16 on the Le Mans circuit (72): for information, the ticket office for the French event will open in mid-January . Save your calendars … and your credit cards !

– Classically – will follow the Grands Prix of Italy, Catalonia, Germany, the Netherlands and the return of the Grand Prix of Finland on the new KymiRing circuit before the three-week summer break..

Moto3, Moto2 and MotoGP will meet again at the start of the school year on a date which remains "to be determined" and on a circuit which also remains "to be determined": reason for these unknowns? This box is normally occupied by the Grand Prix of the Czech Republic, but Dorna refuses to date to continue its collaboration if the Brno circuit is not surfaced. !

Brno on hold due to lack of adequate bitumen

"New asphalt is needed: without it we cannot include Brno in our calendar despite the importance and history of this race", regrets Ezpeleta. Valentino Rossi would also be saddened: it was on the Czech track that the n ° 46 scored his first success in the world championship in 1996 !

The 2021 season continues in Austria on August 15 and then at Silverstone on August 29. The Grand Prix of Aragon and San Marino will occupy the month of September, while the GP of Japan, Thailand and Australia will follow from October 3 to 24..

Note that these three overseas races will not be contiguous as usual over three weeks, but spread over four at the request of the drivers and teams. The Malaysian Grand Prix will end the month on October 31.

Finally, the 20th and last race will be contested as every year on the Ricardo Tormo circuit during the Valencia GP on November 14. Interesting point: the routes of Portimao – where the 2020 final is scheduled -, Mandalika (Indonesia) and Igora Drive (Russia) are listed in this order as reserve circuits. To replace Brno, for lack of agreement, for example…

No choice in date…

Remember that these dates and destinations remain subject to changes, postponements or even cancellations depending on the state of health of the countries concerned: "we are trying to get back to normal, to establish a classic schedule because it is important to block dates ", says the boss of Dorna Sports.

"We will try to keep the Grands Prix in these niches," adds Carmelo Ezpeleta, who must also meet with his Formula 1 alter ego to avoid as much as possible "duplication" between the two main categories of mechanized sports. Sacred puzzle in perspective: stay connected !
