Hurray, I’m an adult!

The Liberty has been in the Piaggio range for 18 years now. It has now reached the age of majority and has been given a new name: Piaggio New Liberty 125. We tested it.

The Liberty has been in the range for 18 years Piaggio to find. Whether the name Liberty (freedom) comes from the fact that it gives the friend of the brand the freedom not to necessarily have to buy a Vespa is an open question. In any case, with more than 900,000 units sold, it is one of the bigger pillars in the Italian portfolio. So now he’s grown up. Well, he’s always been an adult. He has reached the age of majority, and on this occasion he has been given a new name in addition to a new outfit, New Liberty.

Hurray, I’m an adult!

Piaggio New Liberty 125 with ABS in the front

A lot has also happened under the plastic. The new Piaggio New Liberty 125, for example, decelerates at least at the front with ABS control, the rear cable-operated drum manages without it. At least in the admittedly virgin test vehicle, the rear wheel could hardly be locked even without help. The front disk was also badly toothless. However, experience shows that this should improve with increasing mileage.

The drive of the Piaggio New Liberty 125, made entirely in Vietnam, has also been heavily renovated. For example, the inertia of the crankshaft was increased by 24 percent to make the engine run smoother. These and many other modifications are primarily intended to increase running smoothness and reduce fuel consumption. According to Piaggio, a one before the decimal point should definitely be read under optimal conditions.

Without emotion, but efficient

This did not exist on the first test drive, so the cable was allowed to be pulled violently. And indeed: the air-cooled and injection-fed three-valve engine, known as the iGet, has become a cultivated contemporary that has been completely optimized for the requirements of its natural habitat, the big city. At the traffic lights, the Piaggio New Liberty 125 takes off quickly and without the usual start-up delay for its almost 11 hp. At the latest from 60 km / h the propulsion slackens noticeably, but it is enough to swim along on the city motorway. The chassis is not worth mentioning, it does its job. No more and no less.

It was not without pride that the developers pointed out the fact that they had succeeded in increasing the volume of the helmet compartment by over 30 percent to the current 17 liters. Nevertheless, small full-face helmets fit in at best. To compensate, there is a lockable compartment in the leg shield, but you will look in vain for a socket. Likewise a side stand.

Ultimately, the new Piaggio New Liberty 125 has remained what it always was: a largely and in the best sense emotionless, but efficient and inexpensive means of transport for everyday mobility needs in urban areas. The Piaggio dealer gives it out for 2460 euros in white, blue or brown.
