Maxi-Scooter with a big heart

An idea of genius or economy of scale, Piaggio has declined in three versions its X10 with the 125, the X10 350 and especially the 500, thus replacing the late X9 with which it has nothing to do with it. The X10 sports a new engine, a new frame and above all a new style, unlike any other, all in lines and fluidity.. Enough to continue to increase the cumulative sales of more than 400,000 scooters since the X8 and X9? Test….

Discovery

As much the model displays an impressive size compared to the displacement in the 125 cm3 version, the 500 has just the right dimensions. We especially admire the lines imagined by the stylist, with a silver wave reinforced by a metallic insert going from the stern to the bow..

Headlight Piaggio X10 500

At the front and at the rear, Piaggio has even yielded to the sirens of the automobile with LED lights of the most beautiful effect. At the front in particular, the LEDs enclose Xenon lights; nothing less ! At the rear, the two lights from the automobile frame a Piaggio aluminum plate, highlighting even more the topstitched saddle tip and the two passenger handles.

Long, the X10 unveils a long, comfortable saddle for both rider and passenger. And in its cream livery, the brown saddle goes particularly well.

Under this modern line, the X10 also incorporates electronic adjustment of the rear suspension, a dual brake assist system (ABS and ASR) and a parking brake integrated into the center stand…. As a result, no need to operate the handbrake when stationary, it engages automatically. Very practical compared to an MP3 in particular.

So the 500, just like the 350? Not quite. Apart from the engine which gains 8 horsepower and the weight which gains 24 kilos more, the X10 500 is differentiated by a bigger front fork (fork of 41mm instead of 35mm), by its rear suspension with progressive mono shock absorber and a more wheelbase. 1640 mm wave against 1625 mm.

In the saddle

More than a simple speedometer, the X10 reveals a real dashboard with a computer between the two circular analogue dials for speed and tachometer. Fuel gauge, partial double trip, totalizer, it is even possible to have the instantaneous consumption linked to each partial trip, but also the average speed or the maximum speed reached, the range, the temperature of the coolant, the time distance, a clock, the ambient temperature with frost alarm, the indicator of the map used (among 2 maps), the rear shock absorber adjustment level, and battery voltage. At night, the whole is illuminated with a beautiful blue background for the most beautiful effect, especially since the controls are backlit !

With a huge electronic and electrical harness, it is even very simply possible and planned to add an alarm and above all a connection for smartphone / Iphone, allowing access to even more information..
Finally, a double button "up" and "down" allows the stop to adjust the shock absorber (specificity of the 500 compared to other X10s). ASR and warning buttons are located behind the grille at the level of the seat opening controls and the fuel filler flap located in the center.

We discover behind the grille a large glove box, housing a 12V socket as well as closed storage compartments. The left storage compartment even contains a USB socket for recharging a laptop or operating a GPS.

With a saddle just 760mm from the ground, the rider’s feet are almost flat, but flat, due to a very wide saddle. They can then be lodged on the meter of the floor, not hampered by any foot brake.

Contact

The X10’s 493cc 4T single cylinder snorts in a concert of vibrations, especially felt in the handlebars. Accelerator, and the maxiscoot takes off vigorously at the first impulse, with no latency between right grip and acceleration. We then feel the vibrations of the large single-cylinder. It’s hairy and you can feel it !

In the city

Lively, powerful, the starts are particularly dynamic … and the times just as much, so much so that we quickly find ourselves at shameful speeds in town. It’s even more dynamic than the “just” 41 theoretical horses might suggest. Above all, the ASR, the in-house traction control, goes into action quite easily. Very reassuring, the system starts up when passing over the white stripes of pedestrian crossings and even more so on wet roads. The fault of the Michelin Pure, more than the couple, because in the game of the standing start, the TMax is a bit better. Side size, the X10 is one of the big ones and is closer to a Burgman 650 than a TMax. A heavy hair with its 224 kilos, long enough, it embarks quite easily and requires a time of adaptation before being able to play with in the slow rhythm of the traffic. On the other hand, it is narrower than a Burgman and therefore easily slips between cars, without risk and without touching.

Highway

The X10 sets off quickly on the motorway and quickly and easily reaches a good 140 km / h and then nibbles a few kilometer hours, depending on the momentum up to 155 km / h. Long escapades become possible here, especially as the handling is impeccable, including in big curves, and both solo and duo. Only consumption then climb briskly. The protection provided is excellent, especially with the high screen. It just generates a little noise in the headphones.

Departmental

City, highway, the X10 is found just as naturally on small departmental roads. Power, torque and extension allow you to handle all types of roads, without a second thought.

Braking

The dual front discs with 280mm floating calipers provide a very pleasant feeling and excellent power largely at the rendezvous. No need to squeeze the handle outrageously to slow down the xxx kilos smoothly, or by squeezing a little harder, very quickly. It is then possible to put the ABS into action, well felt in the handles.

Convenient

Storage compartment on the left, storage compartment on the right, storage compartment underneath, the X10 also offers a huge illuminated rear trunk with a soft carpet, capable of carrying a full-face and a jet with visor, a large computer, an anti-theft device, a rain suit and there will still be room. The trunk is just a bit smaller than the X10 350, blame it on the bigger engine and the single shock absorber. Everything is easily raised, and via a jack to keep the saddle up effortlessly (a real plus compared to the MP3 500 without a jack).

We also note that the parking brake, invisible, is put in place automatically, as soon as the side stand is unfolded. With a large handle at the rear, the scooter is also easily placed on the center stand.

And for those who want to negotiate during the purchase, there are accessories, a top-case kit matching the body with matching saddle backrest, a leg cover (with integrated lock and saddle cover), a passenger backrest, a support TOM TOM attachment, a comfort saddle, an electronic alarm and a vehicle cover…. enough to have the most business of maxi-scoots.

Place and storage Piaggio X10 500

Consumption

In full, the on-board computer displays a generous 340 kilometers of autonomy for the 15.5 liters of the tank. In town, with normal driving, we will rely more on a good 250 kilometers of autonomy, knowing that the gauge passes the central bar at half consumption after 150 kilometers and that once on reserve, there is still 2 liters . In town, the computer then displays an instantaneous consumption of around 22 km / liter, or about 5 liters per hundred..

Piaggio X10 500

Conclusion

Elegant, practical, the Piaggio X10 is the most opulent of the maxiscooters with all the necessary power and the extension to consider long weekend getaways, or even more thanks to its storage capacity. But heavier, a bit less maneuverable, with tires offering less grip and an engine providing more vibrations than the 350, it is a step below for daily use, not to mention the 2,000 euros difference with the 350 . On the other hand, it will be preferred for peri-urban or even road use with its possibilities for frequent travelers, forgetting after a while the vibrations well felt during the first handling and this especially since its price, at only 7,499 euros the place cheaper than a SWT 600 while it has many other advantages. Enough to justify the choice to go directly to the largest of the Piaggio maxi-scoot range.
