Motorcycle locks in the crack test

Why shouldn’t Finn-Torben deal with locks after the violin lesson? We used to be in Neuschwanstein and Versailles! This test of 19 motorcycle locks from the lower price segment clarifies whether and how you can screw up the tour.

Cyclists are probably smarter. Or maybe they are just less insured. In any case, the fact is that at least the racing bike cracks secure their pedals with very high quality and sometimes extremely expensive locks if they don’t pedal. The common motorcyclist is much more stingy. A marketing man from Louis: “For brake disc locks, the limit for most is usually 20 euros, for chain locks around 30 euros. Something is still possible up to 70 euros, but extremely little above that.” The polo colleagues see it similarly: “The bestsellers of brake disc locks cost just under 30 euros, and chains up to 40 euros also run very well.” People who naturally pay 10,000 euros and more for a motorcycle buy cheap locks. That may be difficult to understand, but it is a fact. To make matters worse, at least the large suppliers sell a little more than twice as many brake disc locks as chain locks, where the chains can usually offer significantly more security.

But that’s the way the market is, and MOTORRAD is facing it with a detailed test of 19 locks from 9.95 to 49.95 euros. In addition to 15 brake disc locks (three of which are with “very good” evaluated alternatively can also be used as a chain connection) four cable and chain locks made it into the test field. MOTORRAD bought all of the test samples in February 2010 in shops operated by Hein Gericke, a national supplier, polo and Louis. Apart from the house brands and exclusive models, a large part is also available in normal specialist shops. The price information can sometimes differ significantly, as some locks are discontinued models.

Professional tools: The electric pick (top right) and the jigglers (bottom right) were particularly helpful.

In the past, it was mostly locksmiths who tormented the locking cylinders, bolts, brackets and chain links together with MOTORRAD, but this year things had to be even more difficult: a provider of security and unlocking technology was to serve as a test partner. In other words, a company that develops and also produces the products for the aforementioned locksmiths. So MOTORRAD ended up with THE supplier of such products, the Wendt company in Bergheim, which, in addition to key services, also advises, trains and supplies police, intelligence services, fire brigades and special task forces around the world. And as luck would have it, company boss Adalbert Wendt also has an extremely interesting motorcycle past, because before his safety technology career, specifically from 1978 to 1985, he was a business partner of the legendary Manfred Rau, who was the international superbike scene with his chassis at the time stirred up. At the end of 1983, Wendt founded his own racing team, the Rau-Motorradtechnik company. After separating from Rau, Wendt wanted to move into his new business premises, found a locked door, hired a locksmith – and had to watch how the not very elegant caused huge damage to the hallway. That was the hour of birth of his security technology company.

In their well-secured rooms, technology operations manager Josef Schumacher showed quite impressively what, among other things, inconspicuous “Replacement keys” made of sheet steel (jigglers) and a battery-operated “Spring steel vibrator” (Electric pick) so everything can be done. The results can be found in the rubric “Filigree departure”. During the subsequent “Brute departure” MOTORRAD put a hand on the heavy equipment and was quite successful. Time limit for both attempts to break open: five minutes.

Only four of the 19 test candidates held both tests completely tight and deserved it “very good”. Why not make it a blanket for the rest “inadequate” There was a simple reason: The attempts to break the building took place under laboratory conditions. So under ideal lighting conditions and with a fixed test sample, namely clamped in a vice.

In the tough theft practice, it is not that easy for the perpetrators, and what is done in two minutes in the MOTORRAD test can take longer at the real crime scene. A chisel is also effective in real life, because in case of doubt the thief will not care much whether, for example, a demolished brake disc is to be recorded as collateral damage.

handling: Can be closed without a key; the cap is missing an opening lip

Filigree departure:
With the jiggler, opening takes just under ten seconds; with the electric pick the lock is opened after 30 seconds.

Brute departure:
The lock body can be widened relatively easily with a hammer and chisel and the bolt can then be knocked out; Duration around a minute.

Conclusion:

The compact lock is not a serious obstacle even for amateurs. The actually very good brand name ABUS seems rather out of place here.

MOTORRAD verdict: poor

Furnishing: two keys, bag, cover cap
handling: Can be closed without a key; the cap is missing an opening lip

Brute departure:
Hammer and chisel are also the most effective tools here – after about a minute, the housing blows up.

Conclusion:
The big brother of the ABUS Buffo 305 is not a big challenge for bad guys either. The blown housing reveals simple cast material.

MOTORRAD verdict: poor

Furnishing: two keys, bag, reminder tag, warning sticker
handling: Can only be closed with a key; Cylinder not covered

Filigree departure:

Brute departure:
Bolt cutters, hacksaw, and drill fail; Hammer and chisel don’t stand a chance. The lock can no longer be unlocked after the attempt to break it, but it remains reliably tight.

Conclusion:
The ultra-compact part does a great job and is currently being sold as a remaining stock at a competitive price. When buying, please note: very thick bolt.

ABUS August Bremicker Sohne KG, 58300 Wetter, Tel. 02335/6340, www.abus.de
Bought at: Polo, www.polo-motorrad.de
price: 39.95 euros (RRP 55.95 euros)

opening: Bolt diameter 11 mm; Gap 73 x 15 mm
Furnishing: two keys, bag, souvenir tag
handling: Can only be closed with a key; Cylinder not covered

Filigree departure:
The supposedly easy to outsmart cylinder is equipped with special pins that make life difficult for the electric pick and other tools – no chance of manipulation!

Brute departure:
The drill goes into the cylinder as if through butter – but then it’s time for work; The Strada 34 is hardened at all crucial points.

Conclusion:
Very heavy, not overly compact, but perfectly reliable when it counts. This ABUS part is also currently available at the remaining stock price.

MOTORRAD verdict: very good

ABUS Trigger (Polo anniversary edition)

opening: Bolt diameter 9 mm; Gap 62 x 9 mm
Furnishing: two keys, bag, spiral memory cable
handling: Can be closed without a key; Cylinder not covered

Filigree departure:
The very deep locking channel is designed in such a way that the jiggler cannot enter. The rest of the tool assortment also gets stuck in five minutes.

Brute departure:
The lower part is made of solid steel, but can still be widened a bit with a hammer and chisel. The bolt can then be driven back to the open position. Duration: two minutes.

Conclusion:
The casual thief has to have good nerves and a lot of patience to be successful here. Quite suitable as a first deterrent.

MOTORRAD verdict: Satisfactory

Filigree departure:
The cylinder is very low, applying a clamping tool is a bit tedious, but with the jiggler the lock is open after a minute.

Brute departure:
The cylinder is secure against drilling, and the cable is not exposed either; all crucial parts are effectively hardened, all cable transitions are securely covered – no chance of breaking open within five minutes.

Conclusion:
The professional with sensitivity gets it up very quickly; the amateur will almost certainly fail. Quite suitable as a first deterrent.

Filigree departure:

Brute departure:
Nothing to do. The housing can be sawed a bit, but the core is effectively hardened; and you can’t get any further with the cylinder either; not crackable within five minutes.

Conclusion:
The cylinder is not a real obstacle for well-equipped professionals; Gross motorists with rather rustic equipment will not get very far here.

Filigree departure:
Opened after one minute with an electric pick.

Brute departure:
Housing and cable withstand all attempts at break-in; the crucial components are very well hardened; the cable offers no points of attack.

Conclusion:
The housing structure corresponds to that of the adjacent Steel-O-Chain – with all strengths and weaknesses; however, the pack size is significantly larger.

Citadel CBR 120

Citadel CBR 120

Manufacturer / Provider:
Citadel, no further manufacturer information, but a note “designed by ABUS”
Bought at: Hein Gericke; www.hein-gericke.de
price: 14.99 euros
Weight: 520 grams
External dimensions: 99 x 61 x 27 mm
opening: Bolt diameter 10 mm; Gap 58 x 10 mm
Furnishing: two keys, bag
handling: Can be closed without a key; Cylinder not covered

Filigree departure:
Cannot be opened within five minutes.

Brute departure:
The bolt is not (sufficiently) hardened and can easily be sawed through; alternatively, the housing can be widened relatively easily with a hammer and chisel, the bolt machined with the chisel then drives the cylinder outwards. Departure time: around one and a half minutes.

Conclusion:
Very safe cylinder, rather mediocre design of bolt and housing – they don’t go together. It’s nothing more than a first obstacle to departure.

MOTORRAD verdict: Sufficient

Citadel CCH 50.90

Citadel CCH 50.90

Manufacturer / Provider:
Citadel, no further manufacturer information, but a note “designed by ABUS”
Bought at: Hein Gericke, www.hein-gericke.de
price: 19.99 euros
Weight: 2182 grams
Chain length: 84 cm
Link diameter: 34 mm
Furnishing: two keys
handling: Can only be closed with a key; Cylinder not covered

Filigree departure:
Cannot be opened within five minutes.

Brute departure:
The cylinder is drill-proof, the chain cannot be cracked with on-board tools either; But there is a weak point: The bolt that connects the housing and the chain is not (sufficiently) hardened and with preliminary work (removing the plastic housing) it is defeated after three minutes.

Conclusion:
As the saying goes: a chain is only as strong as its weakest link. In this case, unfortunately, it is a bolt, the rest of the work has succeeded.

Moto-Detail brake disc lock 5.4 mm

Manufacturer / Provider:
moto-detail is a house brand of Louis, 21027 Hamburg, Tel. 040/73419360, www.louis.de
Bought at: Louis
price: 12.95 euros
Weight: 404 grams
External dimensions: 76 x 50 x 28 mm
opening: Bolt diameter 5.4 mm; Gap 43 x 5.8 mm
Furnishing: two keys, bag
handling: Can be closed without a key; Cylinder not covered

Filigree departure:
Can be opened within 30 seconds with pick set for dimple system.

Brute departure:
The hacksaw takes five seconds to complete the stud. If you prefer to work with a hammer and chisel, you will reach your destination after 30 seconds and have pushed the cylinder out of the housing.

Conclusion:

A nice dummy lock that is not easily overlooked thanks to the signal color. But it is better not to speak of protection against break-ins.

MOTORRAD verdict: poor

Moto-Detail brake disc lock 10 mm

Moto-Detail brake disc lock 10 mm

External dimensions: 96 x 56 x 30 mm
opening: Bolt diameter 10 mm; Gap 58 x 9.8 mm
Furnishing: two keys, bag
handling: Can be closed without a key; Cylinder not covered

Filigree departure:
Can be opened within 30 seconds with pick set for dimple system.

Brute departure:

In this case, sawing through the bolt took 15 seconds. Double the time must be planned for the ambitious use of hammer and chisel so that the cylinder says goodbye to the housing.

Conclusion:
The larger sister model can do almost everything just as badly. Is the ten-second extension of the sawing time worth five euros more? Rather not.

MOTORRAD verdict: poor

opening: Bolt diameter 11 mm; Gap 72 x 17 mm
Furnishing: two keys, bag, cover slider
handling: Can only be closed with a key; Cover slide very easy to use

Filigree departure:
No chance! According to the key, an Abloy system is installed as a cylinder – and that’s something even professionals will have a hard time with.

Brute departure:
The lock is hardened where it matters. The reward for the construction effort: it can’t be cracked within five minutes

Conclusion:
The fact that there are also excellent (lock) goods under the house brand logo is proven by this part, where the details (equipment, color) are also right.

Furnishing: four keys, bag, spiral memory cable, cover slider
handling: Can be closed without a key; Cover slide very easy to use

Filigree departure:
Cannot be opened within five minutes. Here, too, a disc cylinder ensures security against break-ins.

Brute departure:

Cylinder with anti-drilling protection, bolts effectively hardened, housing simply springs back when attempting to pry open – there is nothing to be done.

Conclusion:
The part made in China is the very first choice when it comes to buying a conventional and as compact as possible brake disc lock.

MOTORRAD verdict: very good

Bought at: Hein Gericke
price: 39.99 euros
Weight: 498 grams
External dimensions: 91 x 65 x 35 mm
opening: Bolt diameter 7 mm; Gap 54 x 7 mm
Furnishing: three keys, bag, cover cap, batteries, Allen key
handling: Can be closed without a key; Alarm activation only after a second shock within 30 seconds

Filigree departure:
Cannot be opened within five minutes; the very shrill and loud alarm responds in a practical manner.

Brute departure:
Bolts and stirrups are not (sufficiently) hardened and can be sawed through relatively easily. The infernal alarm tone makes the exercise an ordeal for the nerves.

Conclusion:
The protection against brute attempts to break into the air is only moderate, but the alarm triggered in practice should at least deter amateurs. So there is still enough for a “satisfying”.

handling: Can be closed without a key; Cover cap easy to use

Filigree departure:
Cannot be opened within five minutes.

Brute departure:
Saw through bolts within ten seconds; the housing bracket can also be sawed through. The bracket is a steel part, but can be deformed with a hammer and chisel.

Conclusion:
Very cuddly, a real flatterer – and the part is perhaps better cared for than on a motorcycle. The lock cylinder is completely convincing, but the rest is less so.

Brute departure:
Saw through bolts within 25 seconds; the housing bracket can also be sawed through. The bracket is a steel part, but can be deformed with a hammer and chisel.

Conclusion:
The sawing takes a little longer than with the smaller sister model, otherwise the strengths / weaknesses are identical. The supplier is (according to the sticker) ABUS – that doesn’t mean anything here.

Cannot be opened within five minutes.

Brute departure:
Saw through bolts in ten seconds; the metal housing can be easily widened with a hammer and chisel and breaks; the loud alarm cannot be deterred and continues to sound cheerfully until the batteries are removed

Conclusion:

Not to be opened with sensitivity, but definitely with brute force. The brave alarm gave the discontinued model one more thing “satisfying”.

Adalbert Wendt (61) used to be the owner of a motorcycle racing team and is now one of the world’s leading providers of safety technology (www.zieh-fix.com). His career as an unlocking professional began with a door that was broken open in an amateurish manner.

? Formerly head of the Rau motorcycle racing team, today THE specialist in security and unlocking technology – which job is more exhausting?

! My job today is more strenuous, but also more beautiful professionally. The rough times were fantastic for me as a motorcyclist, but also very chaotic for business.

? If necessary, the customer can already see in the shop whether a motorcycle lock is better or worse?

! Yes he can. At least roughly, because the key shape can reveal something about the security standard of the lock cylinder. On the lowest step are the simple, incised keys. It’s usually a bit safer with drill holes. And the keys in “Bone shape” indicate an even higher quality locking system. Both “bone” The rule is: the more notches, the safer.

? In your opinion, what is the most insecure system in the automotive sector??

! The tubular locks that were widespread a few years ago are very easy to manipulate, but have now almost all disappeared from the market.

? Actually, every lock in the vehicle area can be opened non-destructively, given the appropriate patience and tools?

! The answer is very clear: yes!

? Have you ever been robbed or one of your vehicles cracked??

! During the opening ceremony of our Budapest branch, of all things, my 500 Mercedes that was parked in front of the restaurant was stolen from me during lunch. At first I thought of a nice joke from the staff, but unfortunately the car never showed up again.

Josef Schumacher favors filigree technology.

Two men, two crime scenes: the locks bought by MOTORRAD in Gericke, Louis and Polo shops had to endure two test procedures. At the Wendt company in Bergheim, the aim was to get to your destination non-destructively within five minutes with a professional unlocking tool. Technical operations manager Josef Schumacher worked with pickers and jigglers.

Waldemar Schwarz prefers heavy equipment.

In the MOTORRAD workshop in Stuttgart, veteran technician Waldemar Schwarz raged on each lock for a maximum of five minutes with bolt cutters, metal saws, hammers, chisels and drills.

Anti-theft tips

Product test: motorcycle locks in the crack test

archive

Three locking systems, three security levels: “bone” or Abloy or ABUS Plus system (the two keys on the left), dimple system (center) and conventionally cut key (right).

Anyone who only disconnects and does not connect their motorcycle has already lost when professionals are involved. They only need a van, two to three men and a maximum of three minutes, and then the sweetheart is invited and gone. Alarm systems are of little or no help in such situations, as a self-experiment by the MOTORRAD sister paper mopped showed: A busy hypermarket parking lot and a well-frequented motorway service station were perfect places for theft, because nobody cared about the howling of the Harley alarm system. So it has to be about making the theft as time-consuming as possible for the professionals, because the guys usually don’t have time. Anyone who attaches the motorcycle to something solid (lantern, fence, other motorcycle) with a good chain and U-lock increases the chance that the thieves will prefer to look elsewhere. But that can also be the garage at home, so be careful with too much need for communication on the Internet, stickers or signs (“Harley parking only”) or longer parking activities in front of the garage.

Motorcycle theft in numbers

Product test: motorcycle locks in the crack test

archive

Three men, one van – the Harley is gone. Here in a self-experiment.

According to federal criminal statistics, the police registered 43137 thefts of mopeds and motorcycles across Germany in 2008 (more recent figures are not yet available), which corresponds to a decrease of 4.4 percent compared to the previous year. In 12.9 percent of the cases, the attempt was still made, so the thief or thieves did not actually manage to steal the bike. The clearance rate for moped and motorcycle thefts was just under 20 percent. More than half of the perpetrators identified were minors, and according to the BKA, the total damage amounted to almost 60 million euros. Motorized two-wheelers are most at risk of theft in North Rhine-Westphalia (especially in the border area with the Benelux countries), Bremen and Berlin; safest in Bavaria, Thuringia and Lower Saxony. In neighboring countries, the frequency of theft of heavy motorcycles has increased, especially in Austria. Most stolen bikes go directly to Eastern Europe, which is where most of the thieves come from.
