Essence Motocycles E-Raw, the French electric motorcycle that sends wood !
The electric motorcycle, many talk about it but few really invest in it … A small team of French enthusiasts, Essence Motocycles, intends to electrify the sector with its spectacular E-Raw prototype: presentation of this luxurious project (€ 55,000!) and MNC interview with its designer, Martin Hulin.
Gasoline Motorcycles E-Raw page 1 – Switching to electric, back to Gasoline
Slowly but surely, the automobile is beginning its transition to electric propulsion, aided by incentives (up to € 10,000 in purchase bonuses) and the increase in battery capacities. In the first quarter of 2017, France thus became the leading European market for electric cars, ahead of Norway, with an increase of + 24% compared to the previous year..
Admittedly, volumes are still marginal since sales of electric cars today only represent around 1.5% of the auto market. But the progression regularly crosses levels: the latest generation of Renault Zoe, best seller in the sector, for example "connected" more than 5,000 motorists in the first three months of 2017. Another interesting indicator: all brands combined, the cape of 100,000 registrations of "battery-powered" vehicles have just been exceeded in France.
We can be E-Raw
On the two-wheeler side, on the other hand, it’s dead calm … Despite many projects – sometimes delusional like the improbable abandoned by Voxan Venturi – production remains essentially confined to urban scooters, like the BMW C Evolution with in 2016.

Today, the offer of the main motorcycle manufacturers revolves only around electric KTM Freeride (E-SX, E-XC and E-SM). Neither Honda, nor Yamaha, nor Suzuki or Kawasaki, have yet set real milestones, with the exception of salon prototypes never marketed. As astonishing as it may sound, the second major player in motorcycle production that seriously ponders the issue is one of its most conservative: Harley-Davidson and its already very advanced LiveWire project. !

New brands specializing in electrical energy are also trying to break through with products with increasingly solid claims, such as. But the commercial scope remains anecdotal, due to a lack of notoriety and especially real demand. Because it is at this level that the shoe pinches: very attached to their mode of propulsion, bikers are still reluctant to abandon the heat engine. And even less for a machine technically closer to a vacuum cleaner than to a MotoGP car !
Based on this observation, Essence Motocycles, a small French company based in Lyon (69), intends to destroy this association often perceived as impossible between "motorcycle" and "electric" with its amazing electric motorcycle E-Raw. !
"To change energy, it is a question of changing paradigm"
"To make an electric motorcycle, it is not only a question of replacing the good old internal combustion engine with high tech batteries associated with a latest generation asynchronous motor. Beyond the change of energy, it is a question of change the paradigm ", ensures Essence Motocycles, which has been developing the spectacular E-Raw since 2015 under the leadership of its manager Martin Hulin (read our interview in).
Main particularity of this electric motorcycle designed "in a Lyon-Paris-Reims triangle", explains its designer: its "saddle / false tank" assembly made of wood, in the form of an elegant and minimalist curved piece. The expression "wooden saddle" takes on its full meaning on this motorcycle with very high performance (109 hp and a huge 180 Nm of torque announced!), Capable of reaching "155 km / h" and cutting down "0 at 100 km / h in 3.5 sec "according to its creators.
Super E-Raw
"In order to change the paradigm, we returned to the starting point, the essence of the motorcycle, to take a new direction and enter a new universe", continues the young French brand to explain this "woody" design anything but conventional. , which evokes more of a stylistic experience than an item that can actually be mass produced !
Questioned by MNC, Martin Hulin admits it without restraint: "I initially developed the E-Raw concept as a demonstrator of my know-how", explains this designer by training who has always worked "in the sectors. sports and transport ". Would this E-Raw therefore be an umpteenth prototype without a future, impossible to approve due to its radical choices? ?
"We are proposing to build a very limited series of 10 motorcycles inspired by the E-Raw concept", replies the founder of the brand, specifying that "the homologation procedures are in progress and the motorcycles, built to order and to measure, will naturally be approved ".
Around € 55,000
As for the price of this electric motorcycle, Martin Hulin announces a price "of approximately 55,000 €, which may vary according to the configuration of each motorcycle". This elitist price is justified in the first place by the originality and rarity of the project as well as by its "tailor-made" aspect. The attention to manufacturing details and the beautiful parts installed on the E-Raw also play a role…
Between its inverted fork and its shock absorber with separate Ohlins cylinder, its Beringer brake calipers and its Excel spoke rims, this "battery-powered" motorcycle really throws it in! Its tubular steel trellis frame with impeccable welds and its superbly hollowed out aluminum swing arm also testify to real know-how and a culture of "beauty". Modern, the E-Raw also receives instrumentation in the form of a smartphone that displays the parameters of the engine and the Lithium-ion battery..
- MNC of November 30, 2016 :
The autonomy of this rather short motorcycle (1433 mm of wheelbase) would be "185 km" after a recharge of "30 minutes" on a CCS (Combined Charging System) rapid charging point, assure the designers. Rather impressive theoretical values with regard to the performances announced, to be verified "in real" on the final version as well as the ultra-light weight announced at "167 kg"…
The official launch of this Essence Motocycles E-Raw took place in February in the Royal Racer store in Lyon, where Martin Hulin and his small team (read our) electric motorcycle was on display for several weeks. The opportunity to see that in Lyon, there is no oil … but electricity in the ideas !
