The electric motorcycle, many talk about it but few really invest in it … A small team of French enthusiasts, Essence Motocycles, intends to electrify the sector with its spectacular E-Raw prototype: presentation of this luxurious project (€ 55,000!) and MNC interview with its designer, Martin Hulin.

Site: When did the E-Raw project begin? ?
Martin Hulin, founder and manager of Essence Motocycles
: The project was born in 2015 from the observation that the subject of the electric motorcycle was controversial and generated controversial discussions. However, the effects of global warming are real and it is becoming urgent to develop solutions to enjoy the sensations of motorcycles in the long term. In recent years, electric propulsion has been developing and rolling out in the mobility sector. While it is gradually gaining ground in the automobile, its adoption by the motorcycling community is proving more difficult. So Essence Motocycles developed e-raw, a motorcycle concept that brings together electrical and mechanical to respond to this adoption problem..

M.-N.C: What are your sources of funding, especially the funds needed to design the prototype? ?
Mr. H.
: The prototype was developed on own funds with the support of partners including Beringer, CMH, Elektromotus, Expemotion, Nc Decor, Pymco, Champagne Charles Graimont.

M.-N.C: What are your commercial objectives, by which means (direct sales, networks …) and at what price ?
M. H .:
We propose to build a very limited series of ten motorcycles inspired by the e-raw concept. Each of these ten motorcycles will be unique, built to order and made to measure. Depending on the current configuration of the e-raw prototype, both in terms of performance and equipment, the price will be around 55,000 euros and may vary according to the configuration of each motorcycle. M.-N.C: Is the motorcycle homologated? From when will it be available in France ?
M. H .:
Approval procedures are in progress. The motorcycles that will be built for our customers will naturally be homologated. 

M.-N.C: Do you have international ambitions ?
M. H .:
Motorcycles are used all over the world…

M.-N.C: Your company is based in Lyon, but where the motorcycle is manufactured ?
M. H .:
The bike was built in a Lyon-Paris-Reims triangle. The offices are in Lyon and the prototype was produced in our workshops and those of our partners..

M.-N.C: Can you briefly present the men behind this project? ?
M. H .:
The Essence Motocycles team was built around common values. We are designers, engineers, craftsmen, makers, thinkers, passionate about our professions. We have a common passion, motorcycles, and we want to live our passion over the long term. This is why we combine our skills to design and build electric motorcycles that are as clean as they are efficient.

I am Martin, I am a designer and I have always worked in the sports and transport sectors. Now based in Lyon, I work as a freelance designer. I initially developed the e-raw concept as a demonstrator of my know-how. In reality, the e-raw concept carries a vision that brings together my passion for motorcycles and my environmental and social concerns. This vision gave birth to Essence Motocycles. If I cannot be found at the office or at the workshop, I will be found on a motorbike, a bicycle, skis or a slackline (elastic strap to practice a kind of tightrope walking, Editor’s note).

Pierre-Yves is the engineer in charge of the entire "Powertrain" part which includes the batteries, the controller and the motor. Pierre-Yves has also developed his expertise in the transport sector and has led numerous projects to convert 4 and 2 wheel vehicles by following the state of the art of technology. At the same time, Pierre-Yves is developing energy storage, conversion and management solutions within his design office. He juggles with projects but if he is neither in the office nor in the workshop, it is because he has gone on a trip to the other side of the world and that he hikes or walks. ski. 

Jean-Paul and Joseph are metal boilermakers. They master all the techniques of metal transformation. They bring their expertise to the realization of the frame, the cycle part and more generally the prototype. When they are not working on the prototype, they go to the circuit with their racing machines.
