2019 MotoGP Austrian GP report and results (winner Dovizioso)

Race - 2019 MotoGP Austrian GP Report and Results (Dovizioso winner) -

Marc Marquez took off his Honda to put an end to the Ducati’s invincibility at the Red Bull Ring, but nothing helped: Andrea Dovizioso had, as in 2017, the last word thanks to a final anthology round and a fantastic interior in the final corner of the Austrian GP ! Yamaha follows at a good distance with Quartararo, Rossi and Viñales. Summary, decryption and rankings.

Andrea Dovizioso, questioned on Saturday evening on the threat embodied by Marquez with regard to his domination in qualifying (+ 0.434 sec on Quartararo), remains surprisingly calm: "Marc was faster, but I am confident because we have areas of ‘improvements and our race pace is very close. The Honda official at his side nods in approval, but a fleeting smile betrays the real substance of his thought: this victory at the Red Bull Ring, Marquez desires it intensely !

But the n ° 93 has enough lead in the championship (+63 points before the race) to take risks, and his RC213V is able to respond to the power of the Italian V4. For Marquez, the matter is heard: no question of letting Ducati continue his reign in Austria, after seeing Iannone win in 2016, Dovizioso in 2017 and Lorenzo in 2018. The defending champion makes it a personal matter and proves it. as soon as the lights go out, bursting from his first place !

But Andrea Dovizioso, who was anticipating such a great start for his rival, immediately sticks to the basques and is up to him in the second turn: the two men get in the way and fail to make a mistake in this tight uphill curve! The two favorites are notably overtaken Fabio Quartararo – qualified 2nd -, who recovers the first place with a comfortable lead of 0.4 sec over Dovi !

The Yamaha-Petronas satellite rider and the Ducati official beat Miller, Marquez, Rossi, Rins, Viñales and Bagnaia, while Pol Espargaro and Cal Crutchlow grabbed and crashed in turn 3. Hafizh Syarhin crashed shortly after … A few laps later, supercharged Marc Marquez returned to third place in the wake of Dovizioso, who aimed at Quartararo’s M1 Petronas. The n ° 4 and the n ° 20 literally melt on the French beginner, who does not take long to bow.

Quartararo the fastest Yamaha rider again

Fabio nevertheless treats his fans by opposing fierce resistance to the defending champion, despite his flagrant disadvantage in terms of acceleration and top speed. Then Jack Miller lost the front 21 laps from the finish in turn 9, when Marquez attacked Dovizioso. The two championship leaders come and go without giving gifts, even going as far as contact in the first corner !

Their fight benefits Quartararo and Rossi, who returned to third place ahead of Viñales and Rins. The Doctor is at this stage a second behind on the private M1 of Quartararo. Meanwhile, Marquez ends up having the last laugh and drives a slight gap. His strength ? Its cornering on the brakes, clearly faster than those of Dovizioso. The Italian makes up part of his delay with acceleration, but only part…

Andrea Dovizioso, extremely persevering, does not however give up and remains hooked in the wake of the defending champion. Better: "DesmoDovi" takes more care of its trajectories to take advantage of its strong acceleration and thus manages to gradually reduce the gap.

Marquez’s lead fell to 0.140 seconds ten laps from the finish, while Quartararo and Rossi were 3.8 and 5.7 seconds respectively. One lap later, Dovizioso took action and passed Marquez in the pit straight! During the action, the Spaniard glances insistently on his Italian rival, but he cannot respond on the next brake! The other ongoing battle concerns the 4th place held by Valentino Rossi, now openly targeted by Viñales and Rins…

The last corner: a classic between Marquez and Dovizioso !

Three laps from the finish, Marc Marquez is once again attacking via a superb interior. Dovizioso does not let it be told and immediately replies in the same way, but Marquez insists and comes back again. The Italian overtook him in the straight line, but was transplanted on the following braking: the Spaniard is clearly determined to escape and win to sign his 77th victory in the Grand Prix !

The thrilling fight continues on the next pass, where Marquez cups Dovizioso down the straight to prevent him from passing. The maneuver does not stop the Ducati rider who goes under braking, but the Honda is better placed to emerge from the first right! The last lap starts with a tiny advantage from Marquez, but it is obvious that Dovizioso is preparing a final attempt

This finally occurs in the very last corner, in which Marc Marquez enters a little wide and drifts from the rear by delaying his braking. "Dovi", who expected this usual gap from n ° 93, immediately slipped inside and inflicted on his rival the same victorious overtaking as in 2017 on the same circuit! The HRC pilot, aware of his blunder too late, nods his head understanding his mistake and sets off an impressive wheelie while trying to put full throttle back on the gas very early: too late !

The Ducati is heading for a fourth straight victory at the Red Bull Ring ahead of the factory Honda and with 6.117 seconds ahead of the private M1 of Fabio Quartararo, handsome leader of a Yamaha trio ahead of Rossi and Viñales. On arrival, Marc Marquez pays tribute to "the excellent work done by Dovizioso" and explains that he suffered from a lack of grip at the rear with his medium tire facing the soft compound chosen by Dovizioso – and most of it of the plateau.

"I was in difficulty with the software, so I could not use it", explains Marquez, who nevertheless remains comfortably in the lead of the world championship ahead of Andrea Dovizioso. The latter scores his second victory of the season after that signed in Qatar, admitting, however, to have played it hard or bad in the last corner to finally break the victorious dynamic of his rival Honda !

Championship point

Andrea Dovizioso’s victory at the Red Bull Ring does not lead to a radical change in the hierarchy of the world championship, which remains largely under the thumb of Marc Marquez with 230 points against 172 for his main transalpine rival and 136 for his teammate Petrucci.

The comfortable lead of the HRC pilot dropped from 63 to 58 points, or more than two victories. Something to see coming after eleven races contested and eight to come, especially as Marquez combines staggering speed and enviable consistency.

The n ° 93 thus only won first and second places since the start of the season, except for his mistake by precipitation at the GP of the Americas. Never – since his exceptional 2014 season – has the 26-year-old rider seemed to combine so many qualities, between perfect mastery of his bike and … his passion. !

This successful association allows Honda to also dominate the manufacturers’ standings with 236 points against 202 for Ducati, 179 for Yamha, 141 for Suzuki, 69 for KTM and 47 for Aprilia. Only the team classification escapes the winged crest for the moment: the official Ducati team dominates with 308 points against 259 for the HRC.

The reason is simple: Ducati can count on the performance of its two top riders, when Honda has only capitalized on Marquez since the start of the season. Jorge Lorenzo, retired and then forfeited due to injury from the Netherlands on the official RC213V, does not bring many points to his employer !

Lorenzo object of the craziest rumors

The case of the Mallorcan will also have been one of the main attractions of this Austrian GP with the various rumors related to his future … Lorenzo would for example be negotiating with Ducati-Pramac to try to reconnect with victory over the Desmosedici, while testing the ground with Yamaha-Petronas to recover a private M1 in 2021 !

Lorenzo’s agent ensures for his part that his colt will honor his contract with the HRC until the end of 2020, but admits knocking on various doors to prepare the continuation: "after 2020, it will be complicated", admits Albert Valera by dismissing already a continuation of the Honda-Lorenzo association.

  • Austrian GP:

Lorenzo, injured in the vertebrae during his succession of falls in Catalonia and Assen, remains silent for the moment as to his true intentions, which has the gift of annoying Honda who would like a clear position. Recall that the n ° 99 which should normally make its return during the next race in Great Britain on August 25: "see you soon", he announces above to his fans.

Quartararo again first private pilot in the provisional

On the side of Yamaha, this race in Austria gives cause to smile since the manufacturer with tuning forks signs a hat-trick on a track traditionally unfavorable to the M1. "It’s the worst circuit for us", assures Fabio Quartaro, first Yamaha rider in qualifying (2nd) as in race (3rd).

The French debutant – for the third time on the podium in his first season! – climbs up to 7th place in the provisional classification and at the same time returns to ahead of Jack Miller and Cal Crutchlow, both of them at fault. In other words, Fabio is once again the first independent rider in the MotoGP provisional classification. !

His extraordinary performance also earned him a return to just 11 and 10 points behind Valentino Rossi and Maverick Viñales, despite the disadvantages of his private motorcycle against the official M1s! The n ° 20 – who rode for the first time with the "Factory" carbon fork – finished the race 1.5 seconds ahead of the Italian and 2.5 seconds over the Spanish…

Finally, note the 12th place of Miguel Oliveira (KTM-Tech3) on the national circuit of his employer and his main sponsor, Red Bull. The Portuguese beginner achieves his best result in MotoGP and can also boast of being the best representative of the Orange brand at the finish in front of Johann Zarco (12th)..

Mixed results for the local manufacturer, however, as Oliveira and Zarco finished 16 and 25.5 seconds behind the winner, respectively. His two other pilots, Pol Espargaro and Hafizh Syarhin, have for their part gone wrong on their RC16. In short, not very "energizing" as a demonstration on the Red Bull Ring…
