Marc Marquez erases his bitter retirement from the previous race in Texas with a victory at the 2019 Spanish GP. The defending champion delivered an exemplary performance on the recently resurfaced Andalusian track, authoritatively taking command of this first European round as soon as the lights went out and never left him until the checkered flag. Marquez widened the gap lap after lap, like in Texas … but this time without making the slightest mistake !

Its first pursuers were initially the Yamaha Petronas-SRTs of Morbidelli and Quartararo, which demonstrated exceptional speed this weekend in Spain. Sacred perf ‘for this brand new team, certainly composed of experienced men like Ramon Forcada (the former chief mechanic of Viñales).

A time stuck in the wheel of the world champion, Morbidelli had to give way to his prodigious teammate: Fabio Quartararo, author of his first pole position in MotoGP at Jerez and new holder of the precocity record in the premier class at 20 and 14 days ! Even stronger than Marc Marquez himself, who was the youngest poleman since 2013 !

This Spanish Grand Prix will unfortunately leave a bitter taste to the excellent beginner from Nice, who is also the first Frenchman on pole since Zarco in Malaysia in 2018 … The gearbox of his M1 2019 – a step below the official Yam ‘ – remained stuck in third at the exit of a left, signifying the abandonment of n ° 20 … And the proverbial Japanese reliability, then ?!

Second blow of the season for "El Diablo", already punished for his eagerness during the warm-up lap of the first race in Qatar. His anger and his grief were painful to see back in his box … How to blame him, while a potential podium was reaching out to him ?

His teammate Franco Morbidelli – equipped with a 2019 M1 barely less advanced than the factories – meanwhile won at the midpoint of the race to drop to 7th position. The Italian-Brazilian did not have the consistency to stay in the leading group, where end-of-race specialists like Rins and Dovizioso were invited..

Four manufacturers in the first four places

Alex Rins, only 9th on the grid, is as usual back in the lead on his GSX-RR, providing a further demonstration of his pugnacity. The No. 42 climbed to second place several seconds behind Marquez, before controlling his lead over Viñales, Dovizioso and Petrucci. What a finisher, this Rins !

Viñales, threatened until the last lap by Dovizioso’s Ducati, finally managed to save his first podium of the 2019 season: it was time for "Mack", author of three anonymous first races, even quite worrying (7th in Qatar, fall in Argentina and 11th in Austin).

This "Honda-Suzuki-Yamaha" podium takes on even greater scope thanks to the Ducati double just behind: those of Doviziso and Petrucci, ie four brands in the first four positions. Competitive and open, MotoGP? A little yes !

Rossi lagging behind in Jerez

Valentino Rossi, 6th at 7.547 sec, saves the furniture after a particularly complicated weekend in Andalusia: the Doctor, never in the game during practice and only 13th on the grid, managed to gain seven positions in the race thanks to his talent and his experience.

The n ° 46 failed however far from its logical objective of podium following its second places in Argentina and Austin. He admits it bluntly: Jerez has become problematic for him since his last victory in 2016, while this circuit until then corresponded perfectly to his driving and his motorcycle….

How to interpret such difficulties when Quartararo and Morbidelli distinguished themselves in 1st and 2nd places on the grid before temporarily trailing Marquez, and that his teammate Viñales won the podium there at 2.443 sec behind the untouchable official Honda? # 46 itself does not explain it…

The account is still not there for Lorenzo !

Another stinging underperformance: that of Jorge Lorenzo, 12th at 18.473 sec behind his teammate winner on the same bike! No clutch problem like in Qatar or other "mysterious" technical problem like in Austin to explain this arrival far from the account… 

The Mallorcan, qualified 11th, finished behind Aleix Espargaro, the only official Aprilia rider on the track following the withdrawal of Andrea Iannone after his heavy fall in FP4. Lorenzo leads Pol Espargaro and Johann Zarco, respectively 13th and 14th on their RC16 with a new chassis released during their (72).

MotoGP Championship point (s)

Marc Marquez recovers thanks to his victory in Jerez the head of the provisional MotoGP classification with one point ahead of Alex Rins (70 against 69) and three lengths ahead of Andrea Dovizioso (67), former leader of the championship.

Valentino Rossi comes down from 2nd to 4th position 9 points behind the leading man. The Italian precedes his compatriot Danilo Petrucci, decidedly struggling to successfully seal his passage in the official Ducati team. 

Maverick Viñales, for his part, has moved up to 6th place, but already has a 40-point gap (!) Over Marc Marquez due to his hard first races and his white result in Argentina. The Yamaha official is 10 points behind per race on the defending champion !

Fabio Quartararo goes from 10th to 13th position behind the Espargaro brothers (Pol and Aleix) following his frustrating breakage in Jerez: the French beginner gives up his flattering position of first satellite pilot to his teammate Franco Morbidelli, who climbs back to 10th place after to have signed his best qualification in MotoGP (2nd). 

This Spanish Grand Prix will be followed from tomorrow Monday by an official practice session, then by the MotoGP French GP from May 17 to 19: stay tuned !
