Side stand suspension affected

The mounting plate for the side stand of the BMW G 310 R and BMW G 310 GS can bend or break if too much load is applied to the side stand. That is why BMW Motorrad is recalling around 15,000 vehicles worldwide.

ZFirst, second and third: First the delivery stop for reasons not mentioned (2016), then the recall due to incorrect screws on the handlebar clamp and assembly errors on the front brake caliper (2017) and now the side stand:

When asked by MOTORRAD, BMW confirms that the BMW G 310 R and BMW G 310 GS model series will be recalled. The side support on the frame may break. Affected is the mounting plate for the side stand and thus also the frame, as a BMW spokesman confirmed. The boom to which the side stand is attached is part of the frame. "This can bend if too much load is placed on the side stand", so the BMW spokesman.

According to BMW, around 15,000 vehicles in customer hands are affected by the recall, around 2,500 of them in Germany. "In affected vehicles, the side support connection is checked for previous damage and an additional bearing block is installed for reinforcement", continues from BMW Motorrad. Customers should expect a one-hour workshop visit.

The KBA describes the topic as follows: "The connection of the side stand can break. There is a risk of the motorcycle falling over."

Recall of the G 310 in 2017

In spring 2017 we wrote: "For the second time already, the BMW G 310 R is bumpy when it goes on sale. This time screws on the handlebars and brakes are to blame. 99 units of the entry-level bike are affected by the recall in Germany."

Due to four wrong screws on the handlebar clamp and an error in the assembly of the front brake caliper, BMW has to improve a total of 4,000 units of the entry-level model BMW G 310 R made in India. 250 of the brand new single-cylinder models had already been sold and were in customer hands, 99 of them in Germany. A BMW spokesman confirmed this on request.

Handlebars can twist

Background: During the production of the new BMW G 310 R in India, screws with an incorrect coefficient of friction were used to fix the handlebar clamp. Therefore it was not certain that the prescribed tightening torque was sufficient to fix the handlebars. According to BMW, there was one case in which the handlebars apparently twisted while driving and braking. In Germany, BMW instructed its dealers to contact buyers to have the screws replaced. The machines were then picked up directly from the owners and brought to the workshop.

At the same time, BMW ordered a check of the screw connection of the front brake calliper. Due to an error during assembly, it could not be ruled out that the brake was not screwed tight enough either. “We are assuming that these improvements have been made and completed in the meantime,” said BMW spokesman Gerhard Lindner.

The second false start for the BMW G 310 R.

The safety-related recall, which is controlled by the Federal Motor Transport Authority in Germany, is particularly embarrassing for BMW, as it marks the second false start of the new single-cylinder series produced by TVS in Chenney, India. Originally, the first machines should have been delivered at the beginning of October 2016. But then the delivery was stopped without giving any reasons. There are still no official statements about the background from BMW. Rumors say that the poor quality of Indian supplier parts resulted in massive engine damage.

BMW’s Indian partner, TVS Motor Company, is the third largest Indian motorcycle manufacturer with around 2.5 million motorcycles manufactured annually.
