Everything you need to know about the new 2019 BMW R1250RT
BMW transposes to its most famous road bike the developments revealed on the new R1250GS, including the new 1254 cc variable-valve twin-cylinder. The 2019 R1250RT gains in performance and pleasure and receives some new equipment. Presentation.
The modifications made to the new R1250RT mainly focus on the mechanics and the integration of a larger displacement flat twin – from 1170 to 1254cc – which introduces a new variable valve timing. As for the, it takes an expert eye to differentiate it from the old version !

Aesthetically, the RT has hardly changed, except for the grafting of additional small shoes behind the front wheel and different cylinder head covers. The R1250RT inherits the same massive silhouette, from its impressive bow – surmounted by a large and efficient electric windshield – to its rear part on which are integrated rigid cases capable of accommodating a helmet..
Regulars and fans will not be disoriented by this development which perfectly illustrates the principle: "you don’t change a winning team!" A redesign of the lines would however have made sense to distinguish this evolution, because the RT 2019 marks an important stage: it releases – like the GS – this new variable distribution called "Shift Cam".
As explained in our this new device varies the time and the lift of the intake valves – via two different cams – in order to improve engine efficiency and cyclical regularity, while lowering fuel consumption and polluting emissions..
Variable distribution, but no automatic transmission
A hell of a challenge for the Boxer, which also takes advantage of its increased displacement to increase its power and torque from 125 hp and 125 Nm respectively in 2018 to 136 hp and 143 Nm in 2019. What further boost the revivals of a motorcycle already not really lazy: the current "RT" enjoys good mechanical health, in addition to being sober (5.21 to 6.53 l / 100 km during our).
However, some may be surprised at the absence of an automatic gearbox, which could have been associated with this new engine. BMW – which nevertheless masters this technology on its cars – prefers to remain faithful to its optional Shifter Pro, which ensures "70 to 80% of gear changes without disengaging" estimates the German manufacturer.

Will bikers tired of shifting gears have to wait for future autonomous BMW motorcycles, like this ?! Unless they turn to Yamaha and its FJR1300 with robotic clutch, or Honda and its double clutch. Except that the winged crest does not have a road equipped with DCT, except for the – expensive – Goldwing !
An improved staffing, but still no standard GPS !
The R1250RT also renews identically the specificities of the previous model in terms of chassis, like the R1250GS. Tubular trellis with carrier motor are still on the program, as well as the unconventional "Telelever" front axle and the final transmission by shaft and cardan shafts..
Braking – coupled from front to rear – remains entrusted to 320 mm front discs clamped by radial calipers, as efficient as they are powerful on the previous version. As on the "GS" 2019, the weight increases by 5 kg and goes from 274 kg to 279 kg in running order. Elevation driven by the Shift Cam system, as well as new standard equipment.
The standard equipment of the R1250RT is enhanced in particular by Hill Start Control, previously available as an option. On the other hand, its instrumentation does not adopt the new format with "Connectivity" functionality of the R1250GS, but retains its 5.7 inch format and its alliance of TFT dies and needle for speed and engine speed.
Are you familiar with this dashboard – which includes an audio system? Normal, it is a priori the same as in 2018! Its extensive information can be scrolled through from the practical Multicontroler wheel on the left hand, thanks to which it is also possible to control the GPS … as an option.
Because no, unfortunately, the navigation system is still not included as standard on the R1250RT, nor the cruise control, the seat heating or the keyless start and central locking. A shame for a motorcycle that is the very embodiment of travel and sophistication !
The popular ESA Dynamic and its automatic adjustment of the "Next Generation" damping are also part of the options, where there are also the additional driving modes (two standard: Rain and Road), anti-slip and Angle-sensitive ABS (ABS and ASC without tilt sensors as standard) and the new "DBC" braking aid device which intervenes on the engine brake.
Finally, BMW does not really live up to its reputation as a manufacturer involved in safety by installing as an option its ingenious dynamic brake light – which flashes more or less quickly depending on the intensity of the braking – and its automatic call device in case of emergency eCall.
Several colors, from 19,700 euros
The BMW R1250RT will be offered in white, black, royal blue or red. This last color, quite dapper, is reserved for the "Sport" version, which also includes a short screen, gray rims and golden calipers. Also on the program is an Elegance version – with metallic silver colored pieces – and the "Spezial Option 719" decorations, on which can be installed the very elegant brown leather saddles (as below).
Its price is set at 19,700 euros in the standard version, or 400 euros more than the. This inflation is mainly explained by the new engine and its variable distribution "Shift Cam", main modifications of this new vintage..
The French don’t like fat people
Considerable stakes lie in the R1250RT, a large-capacity road motorcycle very popular with heavy-duty riders … and law enforcement agencies in different countries! Over the first six months of 2018, the current R1200RT has sold some 744 units and occupies 23rd place in the sales ranking..
Its excellent results place it far ahead of its rivals, such as the Yamaha FJR1300 and its 368 registrations recorded over the same period. Suffice to say that BMW does not want to break this beautiful dynamic! Could this be the reason for the relative "timidity" of the new vintage in terms of developments with regard to the chassis and aesthetics? Likely.
Still, road bike is not necessarily synonymous with "RT" in France: the Tracer 900 for example sold 1,400 copies in the first half of the year, squatting in 10th place in the standings. Of course, the BMW and the Yamaha are not directly competitors because they do not offer the same vision of tourism: the German is refined, comfortable and classy, the Japanese go more to the essential with less pleasure and a obvious sportiness.
Still, this is an interesting indicator on the tastes of French bikers … Thus, a GT motorcycle at a reasonable cost (10 599 €) like the Tracer receives more favors than an "RT" much less fun and almost twice as expensive. Like what, the aging of the biker population does not necessarily imply a generalized gentrification !
