Urban GT scooter

If Peugeot is not the benchmark in terms of maxi-scooter, the Satelis 125 is on the other hand a benchmark in the world of the 125 cm3 urban scooter, with more than 60,000 sales since its launch in 2006, even if its sales have subsided. in 2011 in 5th position in sales of 125 scooters in France. It must be said that the competition has evolved, unlike the Satelis, which therefore deserved a new version, unveiled at the Paris two-wheeler show and officially presented to the press in the Paris region…. in the pouring rain…. the opportunity to test its effectiveness in the rain.

New engine, new bodywork, improvements on several levels, the 2012 vintage is a real novelty and not a simple restyling.

Like the Citystar, the Satelis 125i adopts the new generation of LFE (Low Friction Efficiency *), direct injection, water-cooled engines with advantages in terms of performance, silence and fuel economy. Peugeot announces a 20% reduction in consumption, to just 3.6 liters per hundred, while maintaining the same tank capacity for an announced range of 350 km.

If the general line has not changed … from a distance … up close, we note all the work done by the designers. The Satelis thus keeps its own identity, without copying any canon of its kind, but evolves in a more modern way, of which the adoption of LEDs at the front and at the rear is only the tip of the iceberg..

The scooter offers shapes that are both clean, but generous, almost making believe in a much larger displacement. The whole thing immediately gives an image of GT, of serious, "executive" scooter, with a typically French look. However, the square sides have disappeared in favor of rounder lines that bring a touch of femininity compared to the old trucker look..

In fact, from the front, the Satelis 125 seems thinner and its new look seems to tell us, come on, I’ll take you…

In the saddle

The feet rest well on the ground, even for a small rider, thanks in particular to a saddle of only 784 mm high, lowered by 15 mm compared to the previous model. You actually have less the impression of being perched high once on board than on other 125s. And this also facilitates, or especially, low-speed maneuvers where you only help your feet. These small maneuvers are now easily possible without being afraid of tipping over. Conversely, the legs go up a little more in height, once placed on the floor.

The saddle immediately appears soft and very different from certain pieces of wood, existing even on market references, better positioned in terms of sales. The Satelis has made good progress compared to the previous model at this level and you can feel and feel it. We also note the retractable saddle cover at the front; practice before parking under a pigeon tree.

The dashboard gains a large 3.2 "digital screen, backlit in blue, easy to read and offering all the necessary information, from the speedometer on the left, to the tachometer on the right, with the fuel gauge information in the center, autonomy, instantaneous and average consumption, partial trip, clock, temperature ….

We note the appearance of a circuit breaker on the handlebars, as on motorcycles …. but also warnings.

Contact

The Satelis snorts with an electric purr. Side stand unfolded, the scooter can be left to heat up if necessary. A new safety has been added to prevent starting with the kickstand extended. Obvious at the motorcycle level, but not yet generalized at the level of small-displacement scooters.

We turn the handle and the 15 horses arrive promptly given their number. In fact, the tachometer needle jumps to 7,500 rpm before descending again. The scooter then climbs almost quickly to 60 km / h.

In the city

The ease of handling the Satelis is impressive. More than obvious, it’s about the added effect of a low saddle, short wheelbase, low placed weight and excellent turning radius. At 86 °, it is quite simply the best in the category. On a daily basis, this is manifested by the possibility of making a U-turn in a narrow alley without effort, just by turning the handlebars, in the same way as one would do with a bicycle and in a straight manner, without forcing and without gymnastics. ‘balancing act. For the urban user, who needs to squeeze in, often at low speed, or even to maneuver at a standstill, this is a real plus…. and the strength of the Satelis.

Braking is used instinctively, allowing all grips … violent or soft, for excellent efficiency and even more with ABS. In fact, no need to tame it, it accepts everything and brakes quickly and efficiently.

On expressways

The Satelis climbs quickly to 60 km / h, then more slowly but regularly up to 80 km / h or even 90 km / h. In good conditions, well launched, the Satelis can then go to tease 100 km / h, clearly behind the previous version despite the 15 horses announced officially making it the most powerful 125 scooter in the category, but this which does not come true on trial. Its easily usable range of use is well below and one wonders where the advertised horses are hiding. At this legal speed, the high bubble protects well, but generates eddies and some infrasound in the helmet…. which disappear immediately as long as you bend over to hide completely behind the high bubble. The bubble change can be a good solution, it is not optimal.

If the top speed is clearly behind the competition, the scooter offers good handling and heading, without wavy darting as can sometimes be seen on other models. It is not a sporty scooter, but rather a GT, with the faithful and safe character that goes with it and that will be reserved for primarily urban use, its provisions for peri-urban roads being very limited.

Braking

The first GT 125 scooter equipped with an ABS braking system in 2006, the Satelis 2012 is now equipped with the 3rd generation of ABS. Combined with full braking distributing the force at the front and at the rear, the anti-lock system now acts on both wheels with a technology offering much more progress and comfort in use. But ABS is still optional. The entry-level version does not have it as standard.

On a daily basis, the rear brake alone is very effective and sits the scooter well. The ABS only kicks in when you squeeze the lever really hard. On the other hand, it is almost impossible in normal use to trigger the ABS by just taking the right lever. Suddenly, on a daily basis, the scooter brakes hard and well, in complete safety, with good progressivity.

Convenient

Under the saddle, the trunk discovers a long capable space. This long box can accommodate 2 full-face helmets, or objects up to 70 cm long such as a tennis racket, an improvement over the previous model, with 12% more usable volume.

At the front, the lockable glove box can accommodate a 1 liter water bottle. The handlebar hatch gladly accommodates a pair of sunglasses for example and a few small items. A 12V socket is available in the glove box to recharge your phone.

The Executive version (the 3rd version and the most expensive) offers an Abus anti-theft lasso chain in the trunk with 14 mm links, connected and integrated into the chassis of the scooter itself..

Duo

The passenger saw his integrated footrests replaced by eclipsable footrests…. which mainly benefited the line of the scooter and offer a larger part. It especially benefits from wide passenger handles, well integrated into the general line.

Comfortable for the rider with a soft saddle, the passenger is not forgotten with a wide saddle which erases very well the defects of bad surfaces.

Conclusion

Restyled with happiness, the new Satelis 125 offers an improvement of the qualities tested on the previous vintages by adding the more everyday that justify switching to the 2012 version. Comfortable, manoeuvrable, with effective braking, it is a nice novelty in the GT 125 scooter category, but at a high price. Because if the entry-level model without ABS and just under the psychological bar of 4,000 euros, the other models are displayed respectively at 4499 € and 4599 € or nearly 1000 euros more expensive than some competitors, certainly without the same characteristics nor equipment. In any case, this development is a real reason to resell the old version for the new one..
