But also technically a lot has happened for the 2001 model year: the BMW has five more horsepower and a fuller torque curve R 1150 R to the pleasantly low-rev, drivable pulling miracle, which also makes significantly more powerful machines look quite old during the intermediate sprint. To match: a six instead of five-speed gearbox, the last gear of which acts either directly or as an overdrive.

Also new in 2001: Integral ABS, which can be ordered for 1995 Mark, in which the handbrake lever also activates the rear stopper. Which takes less getting used to than the brake booster included in the ABS package, which only works when the ignition is switched on and then also works quite digitally.

Without ignition, only a much more modest residual braking function is available, which may have given some BMW R 1150 R newcomers pulse-increasing moments when maneuvering. But apart from the wrong way around the brake booster and at least until 2003 (introduction of double ignition) the constant jerking that was a bit annoying in some examples, the BMW R 1150 R is still a state-of-the-art motorcycle today, with its agility that is easy to master even by less experienced motorcyclists. Believers can do. Especially in the tightened Rockster version.

Where the rustic predecessor wore two halves of the handlebars and an open oil cooler, the 1150 shows one-piece tubular steel and plastic cladding.

When the engine is cold, the V-ribbed belt, the BMW R 1150 R, which drives the alternator, squeaks from time to time – not dramatically, but with over 40,000 kilometers a change may be necessary. The coating of the front engine cover is usually done early, and the chrome-plated plastic of the instrument panel quickly looks garbage – both just blemishes. Much more important: Check the rear wheel bearing play, the almost play-free Paralever bearing especially suffers from a worn out strut. Leaks on the rear axle are not that rare.

Even more important: a perfectly fit battery, as the ABS responds to insufficient voltage with annoying flickering control lamps. The maintenance intervals for changing the brake fluid should be meticulously adhered to, as the ABS of the BMW R 1150 R is very sensitive to even the smallest suspended particles. Then it gets really expensive. The best used purchase protection: a complete maintenance booklet.

Market situation

The range of BMW R 1150 R is plentiful, but that does not have a major impact on the still relatively high price level. There are only a few kilometers kings below 4000 euros, possibly without ABS and with a maintenance backlog. From 5000 euros, on the other hand, there is a large selection of well-maintained specimens with a manageable mileage and usually good equipment – a small windshield and suitcase are often included.

The Rockster, which is always a little more expensive when new, is traded as used at practically the same tariff – with the exception of the anniversary model “Edition 80”. In absolute original condition (white wheels!) And assuming very little mileage, collectors can sometimes pay a little over 7,000 euros for it. Otherwise the air for sellers will be pretty thin at 6500 euros at the latest. A used R 1150 R is the typical first boxer for BMW newbies – and with them, of course, the money is usually not overly relaxed.
