Too classic for the current modern cruiser, too modern for classic cruiser fans – the 1800s are in a dilemma. The best starting point for price negotiations for a great used motorcycle.

New price at the time: 31,665 marks. A lot of wood for a motorcycle, which, however, could rightly claim to be a noble cruiser. In 2001 the VTX presented itself with superlatives that had never been seen before. For example the upside-down fork, a novelty among cruisers. Or the highest torque (156 Nm), impressive 97 hp V2, which set another record with its impressive 1795 cm³. But the VTX quickly lost its appeal. In 2005, the last year on the German market, Honda sold a modest 94 units in Germany. And at the latest, since competitors such as a 2.3 liter Triumph Rocket III (from 2004) or the much cheaper and more powerful (125 PS) Suzuki M 1800 (from 2006) appeared, many interested parties jumped into the Honda as fine used from.

It is fine: top processing, G-Kat, secondary air system, injection, safe compound brake, and above all the perfectly tuned engine, which already pulls off over 100 Nm at 1800 rpm. The suspension elements are a bit underdamped and the lean angle is limited, as with most cruisers, but with the VTX, the fun of driving doesn’t fall by the wayside. It’s timeless, as is the way it looks. And the price? Fortunately not quite, because you no longer need a lot of coal to buy well-kept specimens. An exotic in Honda quality – the combination has something.

Watch out! The VTX 1800 some US imports. It is better to check whether tires, indicators, exhausts and other parts even have an operating permit in Germany. The same applies to conversions. During the general inspection every two years, test engineers usually have an allergic reaction to impermissible parts. If in doubt, it is better to contact a trustworthy workshop before buying, who can assess this professionally. In general, no technical problems are to be expected from the Honda with regular maintenance, it is considered to be extremely robust, and the engine is good for six-figure mileage. Pay attention to the age of the tires during the inspection (tire identification on the flank). Rubbers that are more than seven years old should be replaced even if the profile is still sufficient. With the lush tire dimensions, this cost factor (at least 250 euros) must be taken into account when negotiating prices. On the other hand, popular accessories such as exhaust systems with EG-BE (e.g. Falcon Double Groove) are considered a positive incentive to buy.

Market situation

Well under 1000 pieces in stock, that looks like an exotic one that is rarely found in the used advertisements. It is not quite like that, because targeted searchers can easily find many exciting offers from dealers and private providers on the relevant Internet platforms. In some cases, however, the asking price is very exaggerated, because very few prospective buyers are willing to invest more than 10,000 euros, even if the specimens are accurate. On the other hand, less well-kept and therefore unattractive VTX with many kilometers (over 30,000) can be found for less than 7,000 euros. Machines with only around 10,000 kilometers on the clock are usually offered for 8,000 euros. A reasonable price, but these used ones often mutate into a grandfather clock. This is good for interested parties, because one or the other impatient provider then falls back on a tried and tested means to sell the VTX: significant price reduction.

The Honda VTX 1800 – mighty, but not as a trumpet.

2001 The VTX 1800 (type designation SC 46) is launched on the market as the series cruiser machine with the highest displacement and the highest torque. 500 machines are sold to German dealers, around half of which find a buyer. Price: 31,665 marks (equivalent to 16,190 euros).

2003 Conversion to Euro 3 standard (new homologation), no technical changes, no price changes.

2005 Side stand spring, spring retaining bolt, washer and nut will be exchanged for vehicles affected by a recall. In Germany, the VTX 1800 is the last time in the range at the unchanged price of 16 190 euros. VTX continues to reach Germany via gray importers.

2007 Construction freeze for EU countries.

2009 Recall due to the risk of cracks on the rear wheel swing arm (weld seam). In Germany only seven vehicles were affected, the swing arm was replaced if necessary. Recall completed.
