Second-hand advice: second-hand hits from the editors
Which bikes do the MOTORRAD employees like??

MOTORRAD editors are professional drivers with many new test motorcycles. But what are the biggest hits for private use?

Jorg Lohse, Rolf Henniges, Thorsten Dentges, Markus Biebricher, Klaus Herder

07/29/2013

Neighbor, nephew, sports comrade – there is always someone who wants to get a motorcycle and urgently needs advice. Sometimes only general, often very specific. In such a case, we MOTORRAD editors don’t have to go after work, and such consultation hours tend to turn into an evening full of petrol chats.

“Nah, I wouldn’t take that …”

These are the beautiful moments when work and hobby merge. Actually, one has already discussed the whole range of the market: “No, I would not take that, the other one only from year of construction 2007, you have to pay attention to the clutch, et cetera and so on and so on …” But in the end it always works back to the same question: if you had to choose one now, which motorcycle would you choose? The answer is always the same: Uh, well … And then: pause for thought.

Although or precisely because so many models are always on the agenda in theory and practice, it is difficult for us “career counselors” to get to the point with such a question. Because privately, we don’t evaluate motorcycles according to standardized test criteria, but rather with heart and often with more gut than mind.

One dreams of life as a long-distance traveler, the other seeks the challenge of the terrain as a tunnel knight, while the next one kneels reverently in front of his metal sanctuaries full of owner pride. Lean angle, brake assist, fuel-saving dual ignition can, but do not have to score. And used ones are more likely to forgive their quirks if they are cheap because of the good value. In any case, we hope that with this very subjective selection of used hits we can give everyone who is undecided a helpful suggestion to buy them for themselves. Go ahead!

Markus Biebricher: Africa Twin

Second-hand advice: desired bikes from the editorial team

fact

Travel editor Markus Biebricher (50) would like to travel around the world with the Honda Africa Twin.

The travel editor wants to travel around the world with the Africa Twin, with the Ducati Experience short trips rich in contrasts and let the Aprilia appear sport-tourism. Three range giants with different characters:

“Even after 26 years of market presence, still a dream for a long-distance travel break: Honda’s XRV 750 Africa Twin. Robust, cultivated, with a handy but stable chassis on asphalt and gravel. Of all the variants of the XRV, I prefer the years 1993 to 1995 from the RD 07 series. Why? Because these machines have the most balanced frame layout and the manufacturer has not messed up when it comes to equipment and workmanship. Gold anodized rims, adjustable shock absorber with reservoir, air-assisted fork. The transmission shifts smoothly, the brakes anchor effectively. The reliable three-valve V2 has no weaknesses apart from its sometimes fragile petrol pump, is good for astronomical mileage without large donations, runs smoothly and can withstand bad fuel. For performance fetishists, 60 hp sounds like doing without, but the performance is always sufficient for long-distance trips. Good XRV 750 have been costing around 3500 euros for years, with a few kilometers often more, but the supply is dwindling. I should never have sold my 1993 in top condition, not even for almost 5000 euros, because you can no longer find one today.

The opposite of the Honda, which pampers you like a Japanese geisha, is my second used favorite: the Ducati Multistrada 1000 DS and the 1100 successor. Because it polarizes and hearts have not been beating desmodromically to date
can take by storm. From 3500 euros there is visibly attractive technology in the tight chassis. The two-cylinder impresses with pressure, injection, double ignition, smoothness and sound. The Duc demands a strong hand when driving.

Werel

Editor Markus Biebricher (50).

That is even more true for them Aprilia RST 1000 Futura. A rare tourer with adrenaline potential for around 3000 euros. With good wind protection, great ergonomics and passenger compatibility. The 114 hp Mille engine burns off fireworks that shake the walls. Then the Futura shows what it is: a character machine in an angular macho design for shameless
a lot of driving fun.”

Honda Africa Twin
Data: water-cooled two-cylinder four-stroke V-engine, 742 cm³ 60 HP at 7500 / min, 63 Nm at 6000 / min, five-speed gearbox, double-loop tubular steel frame, weight 235 kg, top speed 178 km / h, 0-100 km / h 5 , 0 sec.

Aprilia RST 1000 Futura
Data: water-cooled two-cylinder four-stroke V-engine, 998 cm³, 114 hp at 9300 / min, 96 Nm at 7300 / min, six-speed gearbox, aluminum bridge frame, weight 242 kg, top speed 242 km / h, 0-100 km / h 3.4 sec.

Ducati Multistrada 1100
Data: air-cooled two-cylinder four-stroke V-engine, 992 cm³, 84 hp at 8000 / min, 84 Nm at 5000 / min, six-speed gearbox, tubular steel frame, weight 220 kg, top speed 210 km / h, 0-100 km / h 3.4 sec.

Thorsten Dentges: Yamaha MT-01

Second-hand advice: desired bikes from the editorial team

Bilski

Thorsten Dentges is particularly interested in the Yamaha MT-01.

The second-hand specialist prefers a sensible vehicle, a sporty enduro and a misunderstood heavy metal bike as a fleet trio. What the three machines have in common: an underdog existence and absolute reliability.

“When, if not now? Now one MT-01 gain. Because it has not been part of the Yamaha range since 2013 and is more of a grandfather clock than a top seller – it is probably due to the juicy list price of around 13,000 euros. As good as new demonstrators are now standing around at prices below 10,000 euros, which of course depresses the used prices. For a long time I have been observing the number of advertisements for the MT-01: cheap means around 6000 euros for this model, but you can find first-hand specimens with patience and spit with completely unproblematic mileage between 20,000 and 30,000 kilometers. That’s exactly what I want, if possible in timeless black. A macho bike with “only” 90 hp – Germany’s motorcyclists never really wanted to grasp the niche between power cruisers and classic naked during the construction period from 2005 to 2011. But in the future some will probably squint at this machine and be blown away after a test drive at the latest. A certain cult potential can hardly be denied, because the fat torque (150 Nm) from almost 1700 cubic meters, the high-quality and fine workmanship, the hammer sound and the fully adjustable chassis are difficult to inspire.
In any case, I am sure that the value will hardly fall with further good care.

For everyday life and travel, I would use an approximately five-year-old, no more than 30,000 kilometers Kawasaki Versys (on the market since 2007) favor. They are available with ABS and checkbook for 3500 euros and can do almost anything. The appearance: not a burner. Many think – I don’t. And seldom has a motorcycle made me feel at home so quickly. With the manageable output of 64 hp, I can easily get by on the country road. A real no-stress bike.

Second-hand advice: desired bikes from the editorial team

Sdun

For the second-hand specialist Thorsten Dentges (41), the bikes have to be as stress-free as possible.

Incidentally, 40 little horses would be enough for me in the field. But the lively farm horses, please
solid but sporty DR-Z 400 S (construction period: 2000 to 2005). The sub-150 kilo tunnel mobile would be just right for enduro hiking tours that have been planned for a long time. However, buying a used vehicle with a healthy previous owner history would cost the travel budget around 3000 euros. Not a bargain, but well worth the money.”

Kawasaki Versys
Data: water-cooled two-cylinder four-stroke in-line engine, 649 cm³, 64 hp at 8000 / min, 61 Nm at 6800 / min, six-speed gearbox, steel space frame, weight 210 kg, top speed 185 km / h, 0-100 km / h

Suzuki DR-Z 400 S.

Yamaha MT-01
Data: air-cooled two-cylinder four-stroke 48-degree V-engine, 1670 cm³, 90 PS at 4750 / min, 150 Nm at 3750 / min, five-speed gearbox, two-part aluminum bridge frame, weight 267 kg, top speed 210 km / h, 0 -100 km / h 3.7 sec.

Rolf Henniges: Street Triple R

Second-hand advice: desired bikes from the editorial team

www.jkuenstle.de

The Triumph is light, more than sufficiently motorized, super handy and visually appealing.

Henniges, ex-globetrotter and off-road sports fan, would like to poach in all areas. To do this, the test editor needs three bikes just in case, so that he always has the right change players on and off the road.

“One for all? It’s going to be difficult. Assuming the garage and wallet were big enough, the choice would not be difficult. For a quick chase over the home track, there’s nothing better for me than the Triumph Street Triple R. Why? It is light, more than sufficiently motorized, super handy, visually appealing and it turns me on extremely. For me, the 675 three-cylinder is one of the best engines that has ever been designed. Good R-Triples, around four years old and with 20,000 km on the clock, can be found from 5800 euros. Important: I would look for one that already has goodies like the nice little Arrow silencer, the windshield or a short license plate holder. These extras hardly cost a surcharge for a used purchase.

For leisurely traveling or cruising, I would love to have a Harley Road King Get a Classic. Certainly there are copies here for around 10,000 euros, but they are usually over ten years old and still have engines with 1338 or 1449
Cubic and 58 or 67 hp. The newer twin with 1585 cc and 82 hp that powers the Road King from 2007 would be my favorite. At least 14,500 euros have to be invested for this, but the models then do not have less than 20,000 kilometers down, which, however, hardly matters – Big Twins from Harley can be bought without hesitation even with 40,000 km on the clock, because the engines are reliable, the Technology solid. My Road King favorite would be equipped with ABS and would have no more than 20,000 km on the clock, for which around 15,500 euros would have to be flipped onto the table.

Rolf Henniges (48), ex-globetrotter and off-road sports fan, would like to poach in all areas.

In the end, that remains Yamaha WR 250 R. The light cross-country jumper is also fun on the road, because the motor is so wonderfully powerful and easy to turn – hardly any other machine makes wheelies so easy, so long journeys on one bike are possible. A wonderful toy with a high-performance motor that lasts . It starts at 4,000 euros, with mileage of around 5,000 km. And many a dealer is even offering the machine for 6500 euros.”

Yamaha Street Triple R.
Data: water-cooled three-cylinder four-stroke in-line engine, 675 cm³, 106 hp at 11 700 rpm, 68 Nm at 9200 rpm, six-speed gearbox, aluminum bridge frame, fully adjustable chassis, weight 190 kg, top speed 216 km / h, 0-100 km / h 3.7 sec.

Yamaha WR 250 R.
Data: air-cooled single-cylinder four-stroke engine, 250 cm³, 31 hp at 10,000 / min, 24 Nm at 8,000 / min, six-speed gearbox, double loop frame made of aluminum, weight 136 kg, top speed 141 km / h, 0-100 km / h 7 , 2 sec.

Klaus Herder: Kawasaki W 650

Second-hand advice: desired bikes from the editorial team

Jahn

The Honda X-11 balancing machine is rarely in demand on the market and therefore impresses with an unbeatable price.

The advisor editor loves underrated exotic species that have somewhat disappeared in the vast expanses of the second-hand market. And in general: just beautiful motorcycles that hardly anyone wanted even when they were active.

“Retro is actually on my mind, two-wheeled as well as four-wheeled: Mini, Beetle, Zephyr – embarrassing. Retro is only allowed to Harley, they have never done anything else. And for once, Kawasaki, the W 650. I just think it’s beautiful. Okay, your engine doesn’t pull sausage off your plate, even a straight-ahead driver like me pushes the spring elements to their limits, and I prefer to spread a cloak of silence over the slack brakes. I don’t get upset about cosmetic quirks such as rusting screws or chrome parts – I just like the Kawa. It’s just a shame that hardly anything goes below 4000 euros and that it is incredibly price-stable.

the MZ was literally wasted in its active time and is hardly available today, especially as a Race Replica (from 1995) or later Cup (from 2000). For me, that makes the Osthobel with a Yamaha heart even more desirable. Reliable large-scale production engine, a fine chassis and the no-frills packaging with the ingenious double-pipe exhaust speak for this single. The offer tends towards zero, however, a real, reasonably well-kept cup probably costs around five million or more.

The advisor editor Klaus Herder (50) loves underrated exotic species.

A Honda X-Eleven is much cheaper to get hold of. The Wuchtbrumme, which was sold more badly than right from 1999 to 2003, hardly anyone wants to have it even as a used one, although in the meantime decent goods are available from 3000 euros. The powerful engine and the impeccable workmanship speak clearly for the not at all retro-looking nude. The lack of a classic touch was probably the undoing of the somewhat bizarre X-Eleven. The mediocre handiness didn’t make it any better. I still like them!”

Kawasaki W 650

Jorg Lohse: Suzuki GSX-R 1000

Second-hand advice: desired bikes from the editorial team

Suzuki

Lohse would like to have the super sports car GSX-R 1000 from Suzuki as an investment.

The super athlete? As an investment. The kawa? Because even as a child you looked up bikes like this. The crosser? Because we have to move forward again. The service test manager likes to move and preserve.

“Buying a used superbike? And without sports ABS, traction control and electronic suspension, what is the state of the art? One thing is clear: in no other type of motorcycle do the used prices fall as quickly as with the super sports bikes, whether with 600 or 1000 cc. And every model update pushes the value further into the cellar. On the surface, the purchase may not make much sense: outdated technology paired with a high loss of value! But: For me, the Suzuki counts GSX-R 1000 from 2005 and 2006 (model code K5 / K6) to the most mature motorcycles of this genre, is and remains one of the most predictable motorcycles in the over 150 hp league.

Despite its racing layout, it pampers you with a comfortable seating position so that you don’t fall out of the saddle even after a long day in the Alps. It sets standards under the motto of fast-forward touring, which also includes well-designed, cleanly appealing suspension elements and the steering damper. Above all, however, the razor-sharp optics with headlights in Dainese look, indicators recessed flush in the rear and the tri-oval silencer made of matt shimmering titanium. There is still plenty to do on the virtual marketplaces
Untitled material in its original condition, mostly from first or second hand – with a few kilometers from 5000 euros. So buy and conserve! Because this Kilo-Gixxer is a classic of the future.

A Japanese motorcycle that makes a Triumph Bonneville. With vertical shaft, kick starter, tank cushion and all the trimmings. That could have gone really bad. But it didn’t happen. Because the retro idea in the W 650 was consistently pulled through. Courageous and stylish. This motorcycle not only looks classic, it feels that way too. Narrow tires, wide handlebars, British correct seating position. An uncomplicated chassis that asks for restraint on the throttle at higher speeds. And in the center of the action is this dignified two-cylinder, which thunders so beautifully from the cellar. Anyone who takes a seat in the saddle of the “new olds” is entering another world, getting to know motorcycling in its purest form. So that we understand each other correctly: The W 650 is not exactly the dream of my sleepless nights. After eight years of the Yamaha XS 650, four of which were spent looking for the right ignition timing, I was more or less through with the subject of English-inspired two-cylinder engines. No matter how raving your colleagues might be and referring to the scorching invention of the digital ignition. I didn’t want to, but last month the time had come: the endurance test fleet was empty. Only SHE was there. And I had to go to the Alps. And back again. And in the middle it happened. In the most daring serpentine this side of the equator. I didn’t even have time to properly admire that hussar piece of road construction, the Kawasaki finished it that quickly. Trilled around it like nothing. Later, when a horde of super athletes stressed past me, I got the rest of the story: A W 650 like this makes life easier. Not only because of this almost forgotten handiness, but also because of the possibility to escape the clutches of the cult and performance society. There is no grid. You don’t have to do anything: neither thrash spectacularly around the corners nor mimic the Easy Rider. Whatever you like is allowed. Of course, a Honda CB 500 or Suzuki GS 500 E offer similar options, only ?? firstly, no pig is looking, and secondly, their characters are pretty interchangeable. With the W 650, Kawasaki has turned a basically normal entry-level motorcycle into a real event. Monika Schulz
