Motorcycle advice: used cruisers
Buy the right middle class cruiser for 5000 euros

Sports? Is murder. Middle-class cruisers are weak on the chest and clearly too overweight, but comfortable, good-hearted types and difficult to do. They are worth making friends with.

Thorsten Dentges

08/18/2011

Only around 50 PS have to fight with over five hundredweight, and those who like to be on the move quickly, the less potent brakes, little lean angle and the tendency to spongy chassis quickly show the limits of driving physics. Mind you, we’re talking about this millennium’s motorcycles, not some post-war oldies. But what do the fans say about it? They say: it doesn’t matter. Exactly this is the right attitude, because anyone who has ever really grasped cruising lets speeders, stokers and other stressors rush past them calmly and instead motor-hikes through the landscape with relish. And riding a motorcycle starts with sitting down. Middle class equals mediocre? Puff cake.

Harley Davidson Sportster 883

Second-hand advice: mid-range cruiser around 5000 euros

Harley Davidson Sportster 883.

The eighties are back in vogue right now, also when it comes to motorcycles. In 1985 the Sportster 883 presented for the first time. But even then this machine was not modern. After all, you could not win a flower pot with around 50 hp but five hundredweight even in the 1980s. Basically, this Harley is even more contemporary these days than when it debuted. Astonishing? Not at all, because everything that is timeless is often also contemporary, and an 883 is the best example of this: always beautiful. And it is precisely this “model patina” that characterizes the motorcycle that appeals to buyers. Not necessarily bloody novice drivers and also not the wealthy clientele who want to park a Harley as a status symbol next to their Porsche or Mercedes convertible. An 883 would also be much too cheap for that: new from 8,000 euros. Actually a hammer price, because in the middle class that’s a fair amount. Especially since the competition from Japan is technically not miles ahead, but in terms of image it is clearly behind the slim Milwaukee beauty, which has been diligently cared for over the course of its model history.

Equipped from the start with the Evo engine, which is more reliable than previous models (light alloy cylinders and heads instead of gray cast iron), there were timing belts for all Sportsters in 1993, 2000 new brakes, in 2001 more power (53 hp) and a modified lubrication system as well as revised camshafts, 2003 model Hugger with lower seat height and better spring elements. The 2003 model (pictured) was the last “light one”, from 2004 the “Sporty” weighed around 30 kilos more. The completely redesigned model came with a new frame, modified ergonomics, wider rear tires (150 instead of 130) and in the custom series with a 17-liter tank. Finally, in 2007, an injection instead of a carburetor, so that the smallest Harley is in no way inferior to the other mid-range choppers today. The general rule of thumb when buying this machine used is: the younger, the better. She will probably also be liked in the future.

Market situation
Even machines that are more than 20 years old are still (over) expensive (mostly from private providers). In the large, confusing jungle of offers (many different 883 models), however, good offers from year of construction 2000 for around 5000 euros can easily be made out. The mileage is rarely more than 30,000 kilometers. The recommended anniversary model from 2003, for example, can be found in the advertising sections with less than 20,000 kilometers for just over 5,000 euros, well-maintained first-hand machines from the years of construction 2004 and later with less than 10,000 kilometers for less than 6,000 euros. In the case of newer used vehicles, professional sellers usually make better offers. Demand is high, and so are prices in general.

Data (year of construction 2003)
Air-cooled two-cylinder four-stroke 45-degree V-engine, 883 cm³, 39 kW (53 PS) at 6000 rpm, weight 239 kg, payload 191 kg, tank capacity / reserve 12.5 / 1.9 liters, seat height 770 mm , Maximum speed 168 km / h, consumption (country road) 5.0 l / 100 km

plus
Unbeatable value stability; Driving characteristics uncomplicated; Reliability (with regular maintenance) good

minus
Price demands are often outrageous; Thirst for fuel high in class comparison; Engine (with carburettor models) tough

Honda Shadow 750

Second-hand advice: mid-range cruiser around 5000 euros

archive

Honda Shadow 750.

The 750 Shadow made its debut as early as 1997, with even then a very good 45 hp and a pleasantly low seat height. Three years later, she was assisted by the more angry and tightly clad sister Black Widow, who also made air-cooling with finely ribbed cylinders, but in which the same rock-solid, water-cooled heart beat. While the Black Widow said goodbye in 2004, the Shadow rolled up to top form with a cardan instead of a chain, and as a chopper version “Spirit” with a 21-inch front wheel, it also received an injection in 2007 (normal VT 750: since 2008). The Honda never overtaxes anyone and lasts and lasts and lasts – and is therefore a good choice.

Market situation
The Black Widow model with its reduced design is very popular with used buyers today. Prices over 5000 euros are called for, but around 4000 euros you can find pieces of cream. For those who like it more classic and easy to care for: A good Kardan-Shadow (from 2004) costs a few hundred more. Saver tip: With an excellently maintained VT 750 C (1997 to 2002) with only one previous owner and less than 10,000 kilometers for 3500 euros, the equivalent value is correct. Make an appointment for a test drive quickly!

plus
Engine proven and reliable; Stimulating sound; Seat height also suitable for very short legs

minus
Performance hardly up to date in a class comparison; Weight too high; Very moderate draft

Data (year of construction 2009)

Water-cooled two-cylinder four-stroke 52-degree V-engine, 745 cm³, 33.5 kW (46 PS) at 5500 rpm, weight 267 kg, load 183 kg, tank capacity / reserve 14.6 / 3.5 liters, seat height 660 mm, top speed 151 km / h, consumption (country road) 4.2 l / 100 km

Kawasaki VN 900

Second-hand advice: mid-range cruiser around 5000 euros

Kawasaki VN 900.

Classic or Custom, that is the question. Both machines have their friends, the Classic is more of an older model, while the Custom (pictured) with its chic, slim 21-inch front wheel also scores with younger cruiser chopper fans. Not only does it look a little fresher than the baroque Classic with its equally attractive wire spokes, it is also more manageable. On the engine side, both models have the same equipment, and the 50 hp that the water-cooled V2 four-valve engine cheerfully shakes out (good acceleration even below 2000 rpm) digest the impressive weight of five and a half quintals surprisingly well. With a toothed belt and a large tank, the characterful 900 is even fond of traveling.

Market situation
With around 4500 euros in your pocket, you can go hunting. First-class, well-maintained specimens with less than 10,000 kilometers are rarely available for less than 5000 euros, even as the first year of construction (Classic: 2006, Custom: 2007), because the Kawa is in great demand in this class. Bikes as new as of 2009 with less than 3,000 kilometers can, with luck, be had for just over 6,000 euros. Private and dealer offers are balanced. The Custom is more popular with those interested in used, so the prices are always slightly higher than the Classic.

plus
Enormous range of over 400 kilometers; Toothed belt ensures low load change reactions; Motor elastic

minus
Simple disc brakes only mediocre; Service intervals every 6000 kilometers; Weight enormously high

Data (year of construction 2009)
Water-cooled two-cylinder four-stroke 55 degree V engine, 903 cm³, 37 kW (50 PS) at 5700 rpm, weight 280 kg, payload 178 kg, tank capacity 20 liters, seat height 695 mm, top speed 154 km / h, consumption (Country road) 4.5 l / 100 km

Suzuki Intruder C / M 800

Second-hand advice: mid-range cruiser around 5000 euros

Suzuki Intruder C / M 800.

The US-styled “M” with a bobtail tail and three-spoke cast wheels is, at least in terms of current fashion, the more modern interpretation of cruising. Nevertheless, the “C”, the more opulent sister with deep fenders, wire-spoke wheels and wider handlebars, is considered the more popular motorcycle. The “small” Intruder was already available as a 750 at the time of the iconic VS 1400. That was in the 1980s, and unfortunately little has been changed on the engine until today, apart from the injection when it was launched in 2005. Somewhat tired performance, but still a fine motorcycle.

Market situation
Suzuki’s small M-Class starts at around 4000 euros, the C-Class is around 300 euros more expensive on average. In the not-too-large range, used cars from the 2005/2006 vintages rarely have more than 15,000 kilometers on the clock. The prices are fair, so the demand isn’t bad either. In some places, however, the machines are now being sold well below 7,000 euros, so hardly anyone pays more than 6,000 euros, even for very good used ones.

plus
Second-hand prices for new machines are low; Stylish and harmonious design; Cardan ensures little stress

minus
Engine somewhat temperamental; Braking quickly overwhelmed; Fork twists even with low loads

Data (year of construction 2009)
Water-cooled two-cylinder four-stroke 45 degree V engine, 903 cm³, 39 kW (53 PS) at 6000 rpm, weight 268 kg, payload 212 kg, tank capacity 15.5 liters, seat height 700 mm, top speed 160 km / h , Consumption (country road) 4.4 l / 100 km

Triumph America

Second-hand advice: mid-range cruiser around 5000 euros

Triumph America.

British interpretation of cruising. It was brave that Triumph presented its first cruiser with parallel twin for the 2002 season. The courage was not well received in the scene, although the four-valve engine works perfectly and with around 60 hp even grabs the most powerfully within the class. With a crank pin offset of 270 degrees, it even sounds similar to the V2 competition. But sales in this country were limited. But whoever chooses the Englishwoman in the middle class drives really individually. And good, because that America moves comfortably light-footed for her (in comparison not so high) weight.

Market situation
The range is very manageable, the America is exotic in this class. You are most likely to find what you are looking for at dealers who have bought into this model, there are some beautiful pieces from 2002 with less than 20,000 kilometers for just under 5000 euros. The few private providers, on the other hand, often have exaggerated price expectations.

plus
Driving behavior refreshingly easy for cruiser conditions; Lavishly upholstered bench; Powerful and individual engine

minus
Fork tuned too soft, quickly blocks; Suspension struts provide little comfort; Fuel consumption quite high

Data (year of construction 2005)
Air-cooled two-cylinder four-stroke in-line engine, 790 cm³, 45 kW (61 PS) at 7400 rpm, weight 255 kg, payload 195 kg, tank capacity 16.6 liters, seat height 730 mm, top speed 175 km / h, consumption (country road) 5 , 2 l / 100 km

Yamaha XVS 950 A

Second-hand advice: mid-range cruiser around 5000 euros

Yamaha XVS 950 A.

Despite the somewhat misleading suffix “A”, the small Midnight Star comes without ABS, as is typical of the class, and the braking performance is rather weak. The air-cooled, pretty V2 occupies a top position in terms of displacement, and over 80 Newton meters of torque is an announcement. It is a shame that the very long gear ratio thwarted better torque values and the sweeping running boards are allergic to tight bends. However, if it is heading straight for sunset, the 950 will impress as a feel-good bike.

Market situation
When it was launched in 2009, the machine cost around 9,000 euros, according to the list. Used vehicles with less than 10,000 kilometers are now on offer for less than 6,000 euros (albeit very sparse). With such savings, it is worth patiently searching. Investing well over 7,000 euros in a second-hand XVS 950 would be nonsense, as new vehicles are already available for less than 8,000 euros at dealerships.

plus
Long maintenance intervals, thus lower inspection costs; Low-maintenance toothed belt; Consumption low

minus
Massive weight; Translation too long; Freedom of inclination is very limited by running boards that touch down early

Data(
Year of construction 2009)
Air-cooled two-cylinder four-stroke 60 degree V engine, 942 cm³, 39.4 kW (54 PS) at 6000 rpm, weight 280 kg, payload 208 kg, tank capacity 17 liters, seat height 680 mm, top speed 155 km / h , Consumption (country road) 4.3 l / 100 km
