Cheaper is different – at least if you look at the brand-new supermotos. Fortunately, there are alternatives on the used market. Our recommendations – from 2,000 euros.

It’s hard to believe that the supermoto trend has been around for over 30 years. At the end of the 80s, enthusiasm for enduro and cross machines that had been converted into supermotards with road tires spilled over from France to the rest of Europe. And in the hearts of countless bikers, whether old or young. It is this young generation in particular who has not only maintained the SuMo hype in recent years, but has literally fueled it. The motorcycle not as a (transport) means to an end, but to have fun. Wheelies, drifts, stoppies – and sometimes exceeding limits. It is not for nothing that the cross-border hoodie has established itself as a trendy accessory! Supermotos push boundaries and forgive the occasional transgression of the same quite unimpressed. So there is nothing to be said against looking around for cheap supermotos on the used market. Past torments are not infrequently clearly visible from the outside, but technically these devices can take a lot – at least if the previous owners paid attention to regular oil changes and responsible warming up.
fact / Joachim Schahl
Supermotos are also subject to the principle of supply and demand. And after a good 30 years it is higher than seldom before.
In terms of diversity, the used market also knows how to please. The range of services ranges from a not to be despised 31 to a not to be underestimated 67 horsepower, the displacement from 250 to almost 700 cubic meters and the price from inexpensive 2,000 euros to claims above the new price level. Supermotos are also subject to the principle of supply and demand. And after a good 30 years it is higher than seldom before.
BMW G 650 Xmoto
Peter Mayer
The Xmoto is a rational supermoto – if there is such a thing at all.
In 2007 BMW presented three new single cylinders – and on wheels of different sizes. The all-rounder G 650 XCountry, the Enduro Xchallenge and the Supermoto Xmoto were created around the proven Rotax engine of the good-natured but somewhat heavy F 650 GS. But there was no sales success. The reasons for this may be varied, but it was certainly not due to the quality of the bikes. With around 160 kilograms and 53 hp, the models offer a high level of driving pleasure for both beginners and professionals. Around 13,000 units were built at Aprilia in Scorzè, but only 2,692 of them rolled off the assembly line as Xmoto. A certain X-clusivity is assured, but it has its price. This was now over 8,000 euros, today you have to reckon with prices between 3,500 and 5,000 euros on the used market, and up to 6,000 euros for well-kept specimens. In return, however, X pilots receive light-footed handling, an adjustable chassis and often ABS. And just a mature, economical and powerful single cylinder. The 650 doesn’t know about oil consumption. Well-known weak points, however, are defective water pumps, loose baffle plates in the exhaust or a clutch that is no longer disengaging. Annoying: Although there are always replacements for the usual wear parts, not so for some spare parts. So let’s just ask the question: Wouldn’t it be time for a new edition?
Data
Water-cooled single-cylinder four-stroke engine, 652 cm³, 39.0 kW (53 PS) at 7,000 rpm, empty weight 166 kg, tank capacity 9.5 liters, seat height 900 mm, top speed 170 km / h, acceleration 0-100 km / h in 4 , 6 sec, consumption (country road) 3.8 l / 100 km
KTM LC4 Supermoto – 620, 625, 640, 660
Jorg Kunstle
Decent Supermoto from 2,000 euros? Numerous older LC4s are worth a closer look.
Ambitious: Supermotos from 2,000 euros. Because the new hype has let the used prices of 690 SMC, DR-Z and the like shoot through the roof, we dig deep and raise treasures that have been spared from moon prices in part. LC4 stands by KTM Known for Liquid Cooled 4 Stroke since 1994, generally recognized as the first four-stroke single cylinder to combine performance and durability. LC4, which also stands for “original steam hammer”, in various degrees of expansion and hardness. The toughest: 620 super-competition. Kick starter, no balancer shaft, minimal electrics, small oil circuit – and even at that time only eligible for approval in a throttled manner. For a Supermoto conversion, it is important that
everything is entered and the brakes and chassis are adapted to the smaller SuMo tires. If the engine sounds healthy and the previous owner seems serious, the 620 is an affordable hardcore supermoto for enthusiasts.
More tolerable, stronger, harder, more often to be found: the 640 SM. It is already factory-set on 17-inch models, comes with an electric start, balance shaft and ignition lock – used from 3,000 euros. Very interesting not only in terms of price, but also in terms of performance and therefore our recommendation: the 625 SC SM, at that time a factory sports device with a high-flow head. Other representatives: 625 SMC and 660 SMC. The latter was the ultimate in its time and even stable after the facelift.
Data (KTM SC 625 SM)
Water-cooled single-cylinder four-stroke engine, 625 cm³, 23 kW (31 HP) at 6,000 rpm, empty weight 123 kg, tank capacity 10.5 liters, seat height 910 mm, maximum speed k. A., acceleration 0-100 km / h k. A., consumption (country road) 8.6 l / 100 km
KTM 690 SMC R.
fact / Joachim Schahl
The KTM 690 SMC R is the evergreen among the supermoto. And still quite expensive.
The price is one of those things: if you have no competition, you can dictate the price if the demand is high enough. And that’s it! Regardless of whether it is the older SMC (with 654 cm³ displacement), which KTM built from 2008 to 2011, or the SMC R, which was part of the Austrian model range from 2012 onwards. And that applies even more to the last expansion stage of the SMC R 690, which was offered with ABS from 2014 and was withdrawn from the range shortly afterwards with the introduction of Euro 4. You will probably only be able to answer in Austria why KTM did not raise the bestseller above the new emissions standard straight away. In any case, that really fueled the run on the models from 2014 onwards – that’s what we’re talking about here. In places, the used prices even exceeded the original price of 9,395 euros. Which brings us back to the USP mentioned at the beginning, because among the serious street-legal supermotos there was only the KTM at the time. Cross-drivers, wheelie artists, violently bent corners inevitably ended up with her – and the KTM liked to hit the ground. Therefore, be careful when buying used: The steering stops break quickly, wheelie blunders affect the tank. Positive: The single reacts well to more air as a tuning measure, although this invalidates the approval. Otherwise, the KTM is pleasantly easy to care for if you handle regular oil changes carefully.
Data
Water-cooled single-cylinder four-stroke engine, 690 cm³, 49.0 kW (66.6 PS) at 7,500 rpm, curb weight 157 kg, tank capacity 12 liters, seat height 920 mm, top speed 180 km / h, acceleration 0-100 km / h in 4.3 seconds, consumption (country road) 4.2 l / 100 km
Suzuki DR-Z 400 SM
Jorg Kunstle
The SM-Zette is an unreserved recommendation. The problem is the absurd used prices.
The qualities of the Suzuki DR-Z 400 SM, which were only sold in Germany from 2005 to 2007, should be well known. But we summarize. First: 40 PS are enough at just 146 kilos for a loud supermoto boom, especially since the chassis (fully adjustable USD fork, shock absorber as well, the pressure level differentiated in low and high speed) and brakes of the SM Zette, which was cheap at the time, are still today still meet advanced requirements. Second: The Suzuki can also do everyday life. Low consumption, inexpensive maintenance, electric starting. Third: The water-cooled 398 single is a top engine with a wide band, fine running and paired with a good gearbox. Treated with a minimum of love (oil change, clean air filter, valve clearance check from time to time), it is a bulletproof companion. If you still have doubts despite these three arguments, let me tell you that spare parts and accessories are available from the right sources like a dime a dozen. Finally, another sign of the quality of this motorcycle, the DR-Z – whether as an SM, everyday enduro S or sports enduro E, has been sold overseas to this day (!) Virtually unchanged (!). But where there is a lot of light, there is also shadow. In this country, Suzuki called for a brand new DR-Z 400 SM for € 5,650. Used, in decent condition, it is offered for sale today at and even above the new price level. For less than 4,500 euros, there are mostly only conversions and wild craft stalls.
Data
Water-cooled single-cylinder four-stroke engine, 398 cm³, 29.4 kW (40 PS) at 7,600 rpm, empty weight 146 kg, tank capacity 10 liters, seat height 880 mm, top speed 140 km / h, acceleration 0-100 km / h in 6 , 1 sec, consumption (country road) 4.3 l / 100 km
Yamaha WR 250 X
Jason Critchell
A recommendation for lovers of the binary driving style. Binary means something like “all or nothing”.
Somewhat more expensive, but also better equipped than the 250 competition appeared in the house Yamaha 2008 the WR 250 X. Its technology, partly derived from competitor models, was impressive. With 31 hp, the WR is not overly motorized, but it convinces with nimble handling, the more curvy the better. In addition to the adjustable chassis, this is also ensured by the good front brake, which sometimes allows very late braking points. The quite speed-hungry engine is a matter of taste, however, because “throttle on the stop” and a lot of switching work are the norm. With only 137 kg, a slim waist and a good overview, the WR is also recommended as a city runabout. The subtle, i.e. unspectacular sound backdrop of the stainless steel muffler goes perfectly with this. The WR 250 also appears inconspicuous on the used market. Apart from the recall for the alternator, interested parties should only pay attention to regular oil changes (every 5,000 kilometers) and the correct chain tension. Then a lot of fun is programmed.
Data
Water-cooled single-cylinder four-stroke engine, 250 cm³, 22.6 kW (31 PS) at 10,000 rpm, curb weight 137 kg, tank capacity 7.6 liters, seat height 920 mm, top speed 139 km / h, acceleration 0-100 km / h in 6.3 seconds, consumption (country road) 4.5 l / 100 km
Husqvarna 610 ie
fact / Joachim Schahl
The Husqvarna is rare, an exotic one – the right choice for enthusiasts?
At the time of the research, exactly one model of the Husqvarna 610 ie was found in the most popular online exchange. Which would make it clear that the selection of used vehicles is very clear. What can potential second-hand buyers expect from the Husqvarna 610 ie Supermoto, which was built between 2007 and 2009? Well, even if the outside suggests otherwise, the Husqvarna is more of a sheep in wolf’s clothing than the other way around. The SMC from KTM, which was also available only a short time later, with 63 hp rammed a completely different stake into the Supermoto ground than the rather tame, 49 hp Husqvarna. Anyone who defines Supermoto not only in terms of power, but also in terms of everyday use and seating that is more than just good for riding to the next ice cream parlor, could still be happy with the Husqvarna. Everyday life and sportiness also combine their spring elements in a sophisticated way, and their brakes grip easily. This makes the Husqvarna 610 ie a great everyday motorcycle with a supermoto look. Your only handicap: The search could drag on, many are not waiting out there.
Data
Water-cooled single-cylinder four-stroke engine, 576 cm³, 36.0 kW (49.0 PS) at 7,750 rpm, curb weight 151 kg, tank capacity 12.5 liters, seat height 875 mm, top speed 145 km / h, acceleration 0-100 km / h in 5.0 seconds, consumption (country road) 4.3 l / 100 km
