Second-hand advice Suzuki V-Strom 1000 (2002 – 2007)
Low budget travel enduro
Suzuki’s interlude on the stage of big travel enduros was short. The V-Strom 1000 was in the range for only six years. On the other hand, it is in great demand on the used market.
Jorg Lohse
April 8, 2009
Suzuki’s strategy wasn’t bad at all. With the GS series, BMW has made the large touring enduros extremely popular. Of course, that called on the competition, who also wanted a piece of the cross-baked cake. As for the Munich original, decent prices were also called for the alternatives from KTM, Honda or Triumph. So why not score points with buyers in this segment with a low-budget model? Especially since with the V-Twin from the hapless TL 1000 athlete, they had an extremely attractive drive in stock.
From 2002 the V-Strom 1000 was at the Suzuki dealer. And it was anything but a red pencil copy of GS. With an aluminum bridge frame and cast wheels, it made for a rather unconventional appearance on the coarse tunnel parquet.
But the mixture shouldn’t come up 100 percent. The V-Strom 1000 was unable to provide any impetus to buy, despite its price of less than 10,000 euros. In MOTORRAD’s comparative tests, it revealed weaknesses. For example, in a large travel enduro comparison test in 2007, the last year of sales of the 1000 series (MOTORRAD 8/2007). Unfortunately, the twin failed precisely where the travel community sets its priorities. The test result: “In principle a good motorcycle. But without ABS and with slight defects: restlessness when driving with luggage, insensitive fork. ”That meant fifth and last place. The 1000 series was particularly hard hit by competition from within its own ranks: The little sister V-Strom 650, on the market since 2004, immediately proved to be the more mature concept and even poured a lot of money into the big-headed: At the MOTORRAD Alpine Masters The small V-Strom was at the top of the podium twice (2005 and 2006).
sightseeing
Don’t be afraid of the motor: after being used in the TL 1000, which is afflicted with many defects, the drive for the V-Strom 1000 has been revised and has been considered to be fully developed ever since. And steadfast. Nevertheless, there are minor quirks: The first two model years were noticeable by rattling clutches due to torsion springs that were too weak, and the clutch slave cylinder also tended to leak. If the warm-up engine should shut down frequently when idling, the cause is usually too small a valve clearance. Again and again a theme of the lean engine: constant speed jerks, exhaust slaps and hard throttle response. A meticulous synchronization of the throttle valves helps here. From time to time, dealers have made modifications to the engine management system to remedy this – but this leads to the operating permit being voided.
Market situation
The statement from the trade is clear: “We could sell more.” V-Strom is in demand as a used vehicle, and prices are correspondingly stable. According to Schwacke, the first series from 2002 brought it to just under 4500 euros, the young models from 2006 and 2007 are listed between 5700 and 6200 euros. Many of the machines on offer are still in first hand and are in full service. Plus point: Most V-Stroms are advertised with a comprehensive accessory package (crash bars, pannier racks and usually even the matching pannier set). The average annual mileage is around 5000 kilometers.
