A racy full face, but comfortable and very stylish with its visible carbon

Between sport and tourism, you sometimes have to know how to choose your helmet for the right use. And don’t be wrong. But after several months of use, it is clear that the Shark Spartan Carbon is quite suitable for these two uses and therefore shows great versatility. And this, for a good reason: the classic Spartan, just like its Spartan Carbon version, does not belong to the "Racing" range of the French manufacturer, in which we find models such as the Race-R Pro Carbon that wears in particular Johann Zarco or his fans in replica version. The Spartan indeed enters the range "Pulse", top of the range and road at the same time. So let’s put it to the test.

Exposed carbon for a really stylish look

And yet! When you first take it in hand, it is difficult to predict such versatility, because in fact appearances play a little against him. So take a look at these beautiful exposed and well-lacquered carbon fiber slices (and take the opportunity to salute the build quality). Look at those spoilers at the rear, which belong more to the world of circuits than that of the road. Weigh it, to appreciate its lightness (less than 1300 grams, which is all the more impressive as the Spartan Carbon is quite bulky in its appearance and in its design).

The decoration with the visible carbon is flattering

Then, we continue the tour of the owner, to discover a double-D buckle, a Pinlock delivered as standard, a retractable sunscreen (anti-scratch and anti-UV 380 treated). Not bad, all of this.

A good build quality…

Certain details flatter the eye and show that we are with a real qualitative product, cared for in every aspect. This is the case, once again, for the exterior appearance, with a deep and conspicuous carbon braid, covered by colored bands and the "Shark" logo, with an application of the varnish which commands respect. This continues with the small "Shark" logo, a soft blue rubber on the base of the helmet, or even, when turned over, the presence of no less than four different materials used for the base of the helmet, including a blue fabric. soft and rather pretty, but a bit messy in use…

The finishes are of very good quality

And a nice demonstration on the road

Suddenly, wanting to have it both ways, the Spartan Carbon was expected at the turn … and it’s an understatement to say that it did not disappoint. Because its first qualities are immediately noticeable: comfort and lightness are there and in both cases, it is very appreciable. Then the kilometers go by and while the comfort remains a striking quality, other good aspects appear: the stability which does not pose any problems even at high speed, which suggests that the aerodynamic work, the design via digital simulation air flow (CFD) and the presence of two small spoilers at the rear play their role well.

The two spoilers ensure good stability at high speeds

The ventilation is efficient and the openings are easy to handle, even with gloves; however, it remains average, without offering the "forced air" effect that we sometimes feel on competing helmets. Note that the efficiency of ventilation also varies depending on the machine and is more efficient on a sports car, when you are naturally leaning forward..

The front ventilation of the Spartan Carbon

I won’t be so categorical with the built-in sunscreen system (although it should be done with the usual, but I use these screens very little), because the pull tab which is both at the top and at the the back of the helmet is not intuitive to use. But maybe with more practice, we get used to it.

The vents are easy to handle, even with gloves

Mention well, also, to the waterproofing process of the screen which gives a very hermetic system, pleasant in the rain or even when the temperature begins to drop seriously..

We were able to test the helmet for several months

In short, in use, apart from two or three small details and an aspect that is still quite massive, not much to complain about this helmet. In fact, the Shark Spartan Carbon is one of the helmets that I don’t wear just because you have to try them on, or in photos when you have to look good: it falls into a third category, quite closed. That of the helmets that I wear in real life, not because there are professional issues, but quite simply because they are good.

At 15,000 € a piece, that nike the purse.

The price is quite high but, in my opinion, related to the mechanical technology deployed on the steering train.

Between R&D and reduced production of the Niken, we are leaving the logic of mass production of a model with many variations. So, yes, the price is correct in view of these points..

And where is the pleasure, this little burst of adrenaline like “does it work or not?”, If the motorcycle is riveted to the ground with its 3 wheels. Too easy = too bland.

I am not sure that a majority of bikers are looking for “is it okay or not …?” Unless we consider ourselves as candidates for permanent suicide … It does not make sense.

On the contrary, providing a machine which, for some, will reassure them more seems interesting to me.

Finally, this kinematics with the particular inclination is attractive, and could also be preferred by bikers wishing to ride differently, efficiently and far, with just as much pleasure..

And the Niken really, really doesn’t have anything bland when piloted.

  2. It was just for the rhetoric…

What is certain is that manufacturers will always offer better (?). The next evolution will be the 4-wheel Nikouille? Nikail on rail? There is certainly something for everyone, but how far is every driver / rider ready to go, whether it’s car or motorcycle? Who would want autonomous driving on a motorcycle (apart from the passenger), since the car is following this path? There is no need for all this technological debauchery to drive efficiently and far at 80 km / h. Nor even at 130 km / h on the motorway. In real life, and if you want to keep your license and not spend your salary on almonds, you don’t drive like a test driver testing a novelty over 300 km..

And if the 3 wheels become generalized, I will wait for the return of a kinematics with 2 wheels – my favorite – particularly attractive to ride differently (and with just as much pleasure at 70 km / h)!
