So: Just like a high-quality leather suit and skin-tight leather gloves, crisp-cut leather boots also fit wonderfully when the goal is the fastest lap time – but this endeavor often ends in the gravel trap. Leather is therefore still widespread on all racetracks around the world. But in this comparison test? Only one provider sends a sports motorcycle boot made of full leather into the race in the price range up to 250 euros – incidentally: a proud sum for a pair of shoes. Why is that?

But let’s stay fair: artificial leather doesn’t have to be bad. The materials are extremely thin microfibers, mostly made of polyamide, about a thousand times thinner than a silk thread. Fabrics made from these fibers form a microporous structure that promises breathability. The surface looks similar to that of natural leather, even connoisseurs have to look twice. In the laboratory, good artificial leather achieves tensile and abrasion resistance values ​​that are similar to real leather. And the other way around: cheaply tanned natural leather, the poor quality of which has been covered with thick lacquer, is neither breathable nor particularly hard-wearing.
