The Supermoto / Enduro from Suzuki as used

Not only the big manufacturers are rediscovering the small displacement classes; Lively curve hunters are also very popular as used vehicles. The once inconspicuous Suzuki DR-Z 400 is now a sought-after object.

Had, could, should … The subjunctive sentences sound particularly painful on the Suzuki DR-Z 400 in the model variants S (Enduro) and SM (Supermoto). Because Suzuki dealers declare with full conviction that the brand is missing just such a motorcycle in its range these days.

For Thomas Saager from Moto-Treff Lindfeld in Dortmund, the Suzuki DR-Z 400 remains “just a small, cool fun mobile”. Of course, the stew, which was first made with rough off-road tires in 2000, is anything but an all-rounder suitable for long distances. But that is exactly what makes it so fascinating today, explains Suzuki dealer Walter Ziegler from Neustadt an der Donau: “It is ideal for traveling piggyback on a mobile home or camper van on vacation.”

The only 146 kilograms Suzuki DR-Z 400 is quickly unloaded on site. Both types, Enduro and Supermoto, are ideal companions to set off on a path of discovery with plenty of driving pleasure on narrow, winding trails. The 40 hp, water-cooled four-valve engine delivers its power evenly and, thanks to the balancer shaft, is also pleasantly vibration-free.

The chassis of the Suzuki DR-Z 400 S is also solid and sovereign: a Showa fork at the front, a spring strut with adjustable spring base and compression level at the rear. In the Suzuki DR-Z 400 SM with 17-inch tires, which replaced the off-road S version from 2005, a fully adjustable shock absorber with high and low speed compression was used in addition to the upside-down fork.

And yet the subjunctive remains at the end: It would be nice to simply buy a used Suzuki DR-Z 400 S or SM! Because it has blossomed into a sought-after object for lovers.

Typical problems of the Suzuki DR-Z 400 S / SM

The Suzuki dealers confirm that the small dohc stew of the Suzuki DR-Z 400 is extremely stable and extremely reliable. The chassis of the Enduro-DR-Z 400 S, like the Supermoto successor DR-Z 400 SM, is also very robust.

Even the rust problem, which is often attested to by Suzuki motorcycles, is better under control with the 400, according to the workshop opinion. However, even with the younger SM types, you cannot rely on a checkbook maintenance. The motorcycle, explains Nicolaus Glimm from Motorrad-Technik-Hamburg, was usually only seen by dealers for the first inspection: “After that, the customer did the work himself.”

It is a typical bike for do-it-yourself mechanics, explains Suzuki dealer Thomas Saager (Moto-Treff-Lindfeld). The tuning quota is correspondingly high, the main points of attack are the installation of a complete exhaust system and the conversion to larger flat slide carburetors from the competition models. Therefore pay attention to the entries!

Market situation Suzuki DR-Z 400 S / SM

The picture of sluggish new sales has turned completely in the last few years: The dealerships not only desperately want the Suzuki DR-Z 400 “in new” back in the sales rooms. It is also in great demand as a used vehicle.

Trade-ins are very rare. And if they do, they don’t stay in the exhibition for long; because the Suzuki DR-Z 400 has meanwhile blossomed into a popular motorcycle enthusiast. Above all, the original condition, which has not been tinkered with, is hardly ever passed on by the owners. Occasionally, S types are offered that have been converted to 17-inch SMs. With these, the replacement of parts (upside-down fork, central spring strut) should be carefully checked.

With an annual mileage of 1,000 to a maximum of 4,000 kilometers, the odometer reading is very low even with older Suzuki DR-Z 400 S: Used vehicles over ten years old with 10,000 kilometers from first hand are not uncommon. However, the entry prices are correspondingly high. A recommendable offer can only be found with patience for less than 3000 euros.
