In the Tech Team’s Monkey Garage workshop, two specialists deal with the care and rearing of Monkeys and other small vacuum cleaners from the Honda family. A workshop portrait:

“Come on over, we are happy to show. With us everything is allowed that is fun.” No, this is not a slippery offer, just the first phone call with Peter Sturm (56). It already reveals a lot of charm and wit that he and his partner Burkhard Tech (55) at Tech Team’s Monkey Live out the garage. A few days later: On-site visit in Duisburg-Walsum, very close to the Rhine. The special company for bonsai hondas stands in the shadow of a huge, steaming cooling tower of a coal-fired power station. What a contrast to dozens of mini machines: Monkeys, Dax and SS 50. A refuge, a zoo for Honda’s small suckers.

There Peter and Burkhard present finely crafted engine components in a glass showcase. “In Germany we are general importers of Yoshimura parts for the Monkeys.” Keiko Oshimi and Masanori Ueno from the environment of Pope Pope Yoshimura visited the Ruhrpott duo in 2008. “They brought us a huge package of samples,” recalls Peter, “and asked: ‘Do you want to work with it?’ Of course we did!” The precious parts from Japan fit perfectly with the Duisburg company, which offers service, restorations, parts and tuning. A complete cylinder head from Yoshimura costs 1250 euros. Burkhard is the technician, i.e. the workshop man, Peter the businessman and organizer in the team. Their joint shop has existed since 2000.

Honda Nice engine as the basis

Pops Yoshimura became aware of him through a six-page article in the Japanese magazine “Moto Champ”. “Monkeys enjoy cult status in Japan. And we are somebody in the German monkey scene. ”Well, Peter was the editor and editor-in-chief of the“ Bonsai News ”, the“ voice of the scene ”, for many years. It’s amazing what’s going on in Tech Team’s Monkey Garage. Different alternator, smaller oil centrifuge, less flywheel, much more power: carburettor, camshafts, crankshafts, head, exhaust – everything is variable. The tuning carburetor is equipped with a nozzle tube. “So that the flow does not collapse with the large intake cross-sections in the partial load range.”

From 2.1 HP and 36 km / h to 17 HP and 125 km / h top!

Peter and Burkhard usually use the engine from the Honda Nice as a basis. It already has 108 cubic meters and the right two-point engine mount for the horizontal ohc single cylinder. The two equip it with another head, new cylinder, another crankshaft and pump it up to 180 cm³. Their most powerful engines would have already pushed 22 hp on the in-house test bench. “Okay, without a silencer, but at least.” Maximum displacement is not always desirable because of the short-stroke design. “The best are square tubers, which turn nicely, but are also strong around the bottom with the music.” Ideally, 58 to 58 millimeters with 156 cm³, or 55.5 millimeters stroke with 56 mm bore and 136 cm³.

As proof, Burkhard kicks a 136 cubic poison dwarf. It growls and grumbles deeply from the Yoshimura exhaust, sucking in air from a 26mm Yoshimura flat slide carburetor. And how: A variable intake funnel with air accelerator extends the gas column and supplies the cylinder with fuel “like a shower head”. The tuners completely refined the chassis with the small, balloon-like eight-inch studded tires: an extended swing arm from Kitaco ensures driving stability. With a measured 17 hp and a top speed of 125 km / h with a machine weight of only 60 kilograms, it takes plenty of that. The revised telescopic fork and the stable disc brakes prove to be absolutely necessary (see driving report in MOTORRAD 7/2015).

More experience per kilometer per hour

Warmed up, the little single turns the soul out of the body at almost 13,000 revolutions. The speedster likes to go on the rear wheel when starting off if you don’t shift your weight forward. Experience comes from driving. It’s about philosophy, driving experience, maximum driving pleasure. “For us, monkeys embody the sheer joy of two-wheelers,” says Peter, “a smile while driving that never stops.” Burkhard adds: “For us, it completely replaces the fun of driving a large motorcycle.” The motto: “More Experience per kilometer per hour! If you do a 120-kilometer lap with it, you come back and say: Wow, that was awesome! ”Enthuses Burkhard.

Type customer is free of charge with both of them: The original Monkey, the CZ 100, was built by Honda from 1961 with 49 cm³. It had a foot-shifted three-speed gearbox, the centrifugal clutch worked without a separate manual operation. Characteristic: the classic folding handlebar. Loosen the large rotary knob screws on the left and right, and the mini-bikes will fit into every trunk. A small lever on the tank cap could be used to close the tank ventilation during transport so that no gasoline leaks out. After the CZ 100 came the Z 50 M (nickname Boots-Monkey) in 1967, also with five-inch wheels, from 1969 the Z 50 A (rigid frame monkey).

China parts? Only in emergency.

In 1975 this series ran out and was replaced by the slightly larger and much more stable model J1. It had a swing arm with spring struts at the rear, and the tank volume increased from around 2.5 to 4.5 liters. In 1978 Honda brought the heavily revised version J2 with a thicker, trapezoidal seat, mini luggage rack and larger, bulbous tank. J2 models are particularly popular because of this “cute, knobbly” drop tank. “They are very often copied by the Chinese,” says Burkhard. Do you also use China parts? Peter: “Only in an emergency. Otherwise, front forks and brakes are hard to come by. “Important for the conversions:” You should always see that it was a Monkey. “

“We also build what customers want”

In general, the poison dwarfs are likely to be angrier. For example with larger ten-inch wheels, aluminum swingarm and upside-down fork. “What the customers want, we also build.” Tech Team’s Monkey Garage has plenty of parts lying around. “We are constantly collecting new things. What looks like scrap to others is our own Fort Knox. ”Many of the parts are hardly available anymore,“ They can be gold-plated, so to speak: For us, this is the guarantee that we will still be able to build vehicles in the future ”. You just have to have certain assemblies in your inventory, not just buy in when you need them. “Of course we have our own lathe and drill. Otherwise you can’t make any parts yourself. “

Peter, ex-shoe retailer, and Burkhard, a trained optician and jeweler, favor nostalgia: “Classic style, we’re just a bit older.” That’s why they keep their shiny chrome Christmas edition model from 1986 as a gem. Of this special series there were only 2000 copies worldwide. “Ours has zero kilometers on the clock, has never driven, has never seen fuel.” Value: around 5000 euros. Even rarer and more expensive: the original Z 50 M with five-inch wheels and a plaid seat bench from 1967.

Dax with titanium exhaust for 1000 euros

“Our main passion are monkeys: They are smaller, livelier, lighter, with a shorter wheelbase than their bigger sister, the Dax.” Ultimately, Daxes are a different vehicle category because they are no longer as easily transportable. “But there are really nasty, wild specimens with a titanium exhaust for 1000 euros.” Philosophy and technology: If the two of them have the time and inclination, they build “themed bikes” like the Dax in the style of an Apollo rocket . It is reminiscent of the moon landing in 1969. “We are convicts, pretty much Honda-contaminated.”

This is complemented by beautiful miniature motorcycles based on the SS 50. In top condition, they perfectly represent the 1960s. The red copy alone contains parts for 9,000 euros and an engine with 125 cc. Burkhard and Peter have also been official dealers for Royal Enfield since 2013. “We had been doing service for the pre-unit engines for a long time. We liked that, this engine characteristic from the very bottom is something for old sacks like us. ”The Duisburg-based company is also happy to present the bikes from India. You are willing to show.
