Sports drivers like to stab as diagonally around the corner as possible. This not only requires tires with good grip, but also boots that are suitable for heating. MOTORRAD chased ten couples through the test course.

What the ideal sports boot looks like? Quite simply: great-
stable and absolutely safe, protectors for every area of ​​the foot, yet soft, cuddly and very flexible, except-
the ultra-light, made of the best materials and dirt cheap. And it is already clear that no boot in the world can meet these diverse, sometimes contradicting requirements. Compromises are required here. For example: as stable and safe as possible, but still sufficiently mobile. MOTORRAD has the ten brands Alpinestars, Dainese, Daytona, Diadora, Gaerne, Ixs, Oxtar, Sidi, Spidi and Styl Martin Top racing boots were subjected to a practical test to see how the manufacturers succeeded in making the difficult compromise. For assessment purposes, MOTORRAD divides it into five differently weighted test categories.
Workmanship and equipment: How clean are the Kandi-
data processed? Are the protectors made of high quality carbon or kevlar or are they just cheap molded plastic parts? Is the quality of the zips and Velcro fasteners correct? Do the boots look clean inside too? This criterion makes up ten percent of the final grade.
Donning and doffing: The handling when donning and doffing boots is included in the overall rating at five percent. How (time) consuming is the procedure? For example, it takes around four times as long to put on and take off the Alpinestars boots as for the candidates from Ixs or Spidi.
Practical test of walking: One or the other short walk with the boots on will be unavoidable. Even if it’s just the way from the petrol pump to the cash register and back again when refueling. However, nobody expects racing boots to be suitable for long walks. Therefore, the walking test only has a five percent influence on the final score.
Driving practical test: The most important criterion is 50 percent of the overall grade. How good is the fit of the boot? It only shows its true colors when driving. Does the boot sit securely on the notch? What about the mobility when shifting and braking and the feeling of driving on the peg? An iron-hard boot with a stiff sole may provide excellent protection, but it prevents the necessary feedback to the pilot. Are the switch reinforcement and slider in the correct position?
Security: 30 percent of the final grade results from the security criterion. And racing boots should be particularly safe, as falls must always be taken into account. Does the boot make a stable overall impression? Which areas of the
Feet are protected with protectors? How are the protectors made? Are they made of soft plastic or are they made of hard carbon or kevlar? Are the boots extremely angular in the outside area, and is there a risk that the person falling will get caught somewhere? Is the ankle protected from unwanted rotating movements by means of appropriate stabilization?
Conclusion: First of all, there is no test candidate that completely disappoints. The Security Evo from Daytona due to its outstanding workmanship and the
by far the best accident protection. It doesn’t matter that
only because of its stable construction during the “walking test”
got one of five possible points. The XP5 from Spidi shows that there are many points to be gained through being comfortable to wear. Although it does one of the worst in terms of safety, this drawback is due to its great practicality-
properties make up for. So it is up to the customer which criteria are most important to him: maximum safety and loss of comfort or compromises in terms of accident protection and therefore comfortable wearing.

Plus: very quick and easy to put on and take off; still good walking comfort; very light, comfortable boot; non-slip sole, therefore good grip on the notch; full joint mobility
while driving; smooth outer skin, therefore no snagging in the event of a fall
Minus: too wide in the ankle / calf area, so too little hold; inside in the ankle area somewhat improperly processed; unprotected, soft forefoot area; too few or too small failing protectors
Conclusion: The outside is neatly finished, pleasantly light and comfortable boot, which is only conditionally suitable for real sports use due to the too wide cut in the ankle area and the accident protection that can be improved

Plus: excellent workmanship; high quality material, pleasantly soft leather; extremely good protection thanks to kevlar / carbon protectors inside-
shoe; completely smooth on the outside, therefore no snagging when falling; wear-resistant grinding edges; very non-slip and relatively soft sole for a good grip
and a lot of feeling on the footrest; still good mobility when driving;
very good torsion protection in the ankle area
Minus: the bottom of the three Velcro straps on the inner boot is difficult to close

Minus: buckles that are difficult to use with gloves; slight pressure points on ankle and heel; cheap looking toe sliders; unprotected, soft forefoot area; Shank very angular? Risk of entanglement in the event of a fall
Conclusion: elaborately made sports boot with slight weaknesses in
handling and safety, but good driving characteristics

Test: IXS Victory

Plus: very quick and easy to put on and take off; still good walking comfort; toe sliders that perfectly fit around the edge of the sole;
neat fit
Minus: unprotected, soft forefoot area; large gaps

Conclusion: No-frills boots with very well positioned toe sliders, which are only partially suitable for real sports use due to the accident protection that can be improved

Test: oxtar TCS Evo RX

Plus: very quick and easy to put on and take off; neatly finished inside and outside; very non-slip sole for a good grip on the notch;
good mobility when driving
Minus: pressure point on the heel; Plastic edging in the ankle-
and Achilles tendon area ?? Danger of getting caught in a fall; a lot of plastic; Toe slider attached a little too high
Conclusion: a neatly crafted boot with no real weaknesses, but also without particularly outstanding properties

Test: sidi Vertigo Corsa

Plus: closable foot ventilation; all components individually-

Minus: little width adjustment on the shaft; unprotected, soft forefoot area; too few or too small failing protectors; a lot of plastic
Conclusion: extremely comfortable to wear, light boot with a great fit-
shape and outstanding driving characteristics, but accident protection that can be improved

Test: Styl Martin GP-Sonic T

Plus: very quick and easy to put on and take off; lockable foot ventilation; very non-slip sole for a good grip on the notch;
good mobility when driving; Toe slider well positioned
Minus: pressure point on heel and ankle; Heavy ventilation slider
to use; unprotected, soft forefoot area; a lot of plastic
Conclusion: The GP-Sonic T is one of the few sports boots to offer ventilation, which, however, can hardly be operated with gloves.

The table shows a positive result: all participants at least get the MOTORRAD rating good, four candidates even do very well. But despite
of the narrow exit
the differences between
the boots in the individual criteria are sometimes blatant. This conspicuity can almost always be matched with the different requirements
Explain for the respective test points: A boot that is comfortable to wear when driving and walking because it is soft, for example, can hardly offer maximum safety. The result is always a compromise.
