Thailand - Buriram - WorldSSP Thailand: Cluzel takes revenge on Krummenacher - Used YAMAHA

Widely beaten by Randy Krummenacher during the first and funny event of the World Supersport 2019 in Australia, Jules Cluzel perfectly managed the second in Thailand. The two strong men at the start of the season neutralize each other in the championship but move away from their rivals…

At the top of the timesheet on Friday, Jules Cluzel drove home the point yesterday by taking pole position, the 21st of his career and the first since the race in Great Britain last year. The n ° 16 of the Yamaha GMT94 team turned in 1’36.826 on the demanding track of Buriram … under a heavy sun and in a stifling heat !

As in Australia, our "Coq Supersportif" shares the front row with the two members of the Yamaha Bardahl team: Randy Krummenacher precedes Federico Caricasulo. As a reminder, the Swiss n ° 21 who won the first round in Australia is leading the championship ahead of our French n ° 16 and his Italian teammate n ° 64…

Hiraki Okubo places his Kawasaki n ° 78 in the lead of the second row, ahead of the MV Agusta n ° 3 of Raffaele de Rosa and the Yamaha n ° 32 of Isaac Vinales. Author of pole in 2016 – and still holder of the track record in Supersport – Lucas Mahias could only qualify in 9th place, behind Thomas Gradinger and Hector Barbera.

Unfortunately, our 2016 WSSP champion is forced to start last, following a pit stop before the warm-up lap … Our two other musketeers start from the middle of the grid: Jules Danilo places his Honda n ° 95 in 12th position , Corentin Perolari his Yamaha n ° 94 in 15th.

Departure : Cluzel got off to a magnificent start in front of Vinales who tried to overtake Caricasulo but had to pull away in the first corner! Okubo keeps "his" 4th place and even doubles Vinales right in the middle of hairpin n ° 3. In the middle of the peloton, Badovini fell on the first curve…

De Rosa and his MV Agusta withstood the attacks of the hot Gradinger and his Yamaha, especially the – very – heavy braking of turn 3 in the 2nd lap! Barbera is ahead of Krummenacher who completely missed his start: the Swiss driver is only ninth … Danilo is tenth, Mahias eleventh, Perolari … 21st … !?

Cluzel leads the dance, at a good pace, but the fastest on the track is Gradinger: the former teammate of "Julo" completed the 2nd lap half a second faster than his direct rivals. The Team Kallio rider overtakes Okubo then De Rosa and follows in the wake of his teammate Vinales.

Behind the four leading Yamaha, the Kawasaki n ° 78 and its Ninja Okubo are struggling to stay in touch. The situation is however more miserable for Gradinger who fell on the 5th lap following an engine failure! Vinales on the contrary, accelerates and overtakes Caricasulo.

The Spaniard is unbridled: he passes in front of Cluzel when braking the last corner but widens and comes out less strongly than our compatriot! Jules was absolutely not distracted by this lightning attack and resumed his solid race in the lead. Behind, Caricasulo returns to Vinales.

Okubo regains "his" fourth place, a big second behind the top three. Krumennacher is forced to attack hard – and sometimes miss a bit – on the Thai track to pass De Rosa then Barbera. The n ° 21 is found within one second of the n ° 78…

Caricasulo overtook Cluzel on the 8th lap … exactly at the halfway point! Federico accelerates the tempo slightly but "Julo" is neither impressed nor left behind. On the contrary: the French plunged his R6 under that of the Italian in turn 5 and took control !

Our other compatriots are also fighting, but much further: Lucas Mahias on his Kawa and Jules Danilo on his Honda are glued to their eighth and ninth places. Corentin Perolari on his Yamaha makes a tremendous comeback: Christophe Guyot’s colt is in twelfth position.

Far ahead, the n ° 64 is needed on the brakes around bend n ° 3! Our favorite # 16 is forced to give way at the exit of this big hairpin bend, but fights back with authority in turn # 8. So who is the boss? Caricasulo and Vinales lose contact at the end of the 12th lap … while Okubo and Krummenacher get closer !

Passed in front of Hikari when braking on turn 3, Randy sets a new race record and joins the three leading Yamaha! The Swiss rider overtook Vinales, still in turn 3 and three laps from the end. He is then third and ends this 14th lap three tenths behind his teammate…

Jules Cluzel whips his Yamaha but Federico Caricasulo follows him like his shadow, swerves when braking on turn 3 and takes the controls … before losing them in the winding portion where he is less sharp than his main opponent !

A superb fight then ensued between Krummenacher, Caricasulo and Vinales. This allows our "inter-national" Cluzel to take his distance in the last lap and to win a victory at the end of a final easier than feared, but a victory well deserved. !

Our favorite n ° 16 wins by a small second on Krummenacher: the two men therefore have the same number of points in the championship (45) while Caricasulo, third as at Phillip Island, doubled his stake in Buriram (32 points therefore ).

Starting from the back of the grid, Lucas Mahias collects eight points … which is twice as many as in Australia! The 2017 world champion climbs to ninth position in the provisional. Three places – and four points – higher is Corentin Perolari, also author of a good comeback during this Thai race..

Finally, Jules Danilo did not score any points during this second World Supersport event: he was forced to retire on the 8th lap. Like Rob Hartog, the French n ° 95 is under investigation concerning the fall of Ayrton Badovini a few seconds after the start. Reactions of the pilots to follow tomorrow, on Site…
