3,000 km holding test
Having become essential, the Vanucci brand depends on the equipment manufacturer Loui. Revised version of the Okovango outfit, this second opus optimizes ventilation and accessorization for a remarkable service-price ratio.
Vanucci Okovango II pants and jacket
Discovery
In its beige, anthracite and red livery, the Vanucci set looks great. Sleek and technical, but less ventilated than the lighter Tanami model, the Okovango is more complete and versatile. So dressed, you should face almost any season. The outer fabric, not impermeable to heavy rains, is treated with Teflon to limit soiling which will undoubtedly tarnish its light dress in the long run. Nevertheless, after 3,000 kilometers, the whole is still like new, despite passages in dusty enduro and the impacts, cleaned, many insects..
Test of the Vanucci Okovango II jacket and pants set
This typical "adventurer" textile outfit revolves around a jacket and pants in thick Cordura nylon coupled with removable Sympatex laminate linings that are breathable, windproof and waterproof. But more thermal protection. The brand leaves it to the biker to choose his warm clothes. A plus for the size generally associated with these devices.
The laminated liners of the Okovango II
Shoulders, elbows and forearms are lined with a more abrasion resistant material. Same treatment on the hips and knees for the pants. These locations also receive Super Shield HTP internal protections. A back protector, unfortunately optional but inexpensive, will complete the safety aspect.
There are external reinforcements at the drop zones
Safe, the Vanucci equipment also gives pride of place to comfort and equipment. The velvet-lined collar is particularly soft. Stretch inserts are fitted to the inside of the elbows, thighs and knees. To adapt to sunny days, 10 ventilation systems refresh the jacket: two panels on the chest, two zipped openings a little higher up, two more on the upper arms, two at the wrists and two extractors on the back. The pants only receive two zippers on the thighs. And when it comes to storage, the Vanucci outfit doesn’t skimp on the pockets either: two internally, one of which contains a clever waterproof case. Two other external ones are waterproof. The last is of the game bag type. The pants have a waterproof pocket on the left leg and two other classic jeans type, but zipped, on the top.
Zipped pocket for Okovango II pants
To optimize ergonomics, two zips allow the side pockets to be separated, optimizing comfort once in the saddle and the snap closure of the collar is adjustable in tightening. Arms and cuffs offer two adjustments and the jacket can be adjusted to size with half-belts. Ditto on the pants, both at the waistband and at the bottom of the legs. Finally, note the non-slip placed on the buttocks.
Non-slip elements are placed at the level of the seat
The finish of the whole is most convincing. Materials, fit and functionality enhance the Okovango. We particularly appreciate the multiple gussets (junction of the sleeves to the body, top of the pants, knees….). We regret the absence, for the collar, of an offset attachment allowing the flap to be removed in the event of high heat. Unfixed, the paw flaps in the wind…. The zips of the internal pockets can also bite on the fabric, blocking the closure a little. A fairly recurring detail on Vanucci products.
Gussets facilitate movement while riding
Last point, a zip runs the waist of the jacket to connect the pants and a card holder on the right arm facilitates payment at the toll.
Fixing the lining at the sleeves
Test
The Vanucci set gives a lot of ease and its settings allow to best adjust its elements to the physiognomy of the pilot. Rather light, it is forgotten, especially as the thermal regulation associated with the good breathability of the lining provides great comfort. When the temperature drops, the full outfit can easily withstand, in a t-shirt, a mercury of 10 °. Lower, it will be necessary to bring an additional thickness.
The Okovango protects effectively from the cold
Passing mountain passes in the rain, the cold is barely noticeable while the water flows without weighing down the Okovango too much. Strong enough, the outer nylon will still take water in heavy downpours. But internal liners keep you safe.
If the Nylon can take water, the linings play their protective role perfectly
Waterproof, they can be removed from 15 degrees. In this regard, that of the jacket attached to the cuffs by zips devoid of zippers, comfort requires, is not the simplest to operate. Lightened from these elements, the Vanucci outfit is even more pleasant and the air flows from the vents are clearly perceptible. Approaching 30 °, with all ventilations open, the Okovango still ends up making its dense fabric felt and limits its versatility. Nothing unusual for this all-season adventurer.
In hot weather, openings allow good ventilation
The Okovango’s strong point, the accessibility of the pockets, their number, the quality of the zips and the adjustments make the whole thing appreciable for a large part of the year. The comfort provided by the inserts and the overall cut is most pleasant. The high legged will especially appreciate the leg length.
The set is generally comfortable
Conclusion
In order to contain, remarkably, the price of its Okovango set, Vanucci therefore combines a resistant exterior, but not waterproof, with waterproof and breathable removable linings. The opposite choice to the recently tested top-of-the-range Dainese D-Explorer Gore-Tex jacket. More versatile, the outfit of the German equipment manufacturer may prove to be a little less practical when it is necessary to get rid of the internal liners during a trip. But comfort and lightness are felt, rewarding its wearer with excellent ease on any occasion..
Test of the Vanucci Okovango II set
The final advantage of the Okovango is its price: the jacket is priced at € 399.99, the pants € 329.99, or € 729.99 overall. To be compared with the Italian article cited above, claiming on its own 150 € more…. Admittedly, these products do not play in the same range. Less technically sophisticated, the Vanucci Okovango outfit will give you value for your money. Durability may be less with sustained use, but its true versatility and comfort should appeal to everyday riders or large spaces..
