The manufacturers of retrofit air filters promise more performance through higher throughput. Is it all just hot air or useful fine-tuning? MOTORRAD tried it on two bikes with carburettors and injection systems.

As is so often the case in life, it is also important to have the right mixture for the combustion engine in order for the spark to jump. In extensive tests, the motorcycle manufacturers determine the optimal compromise between perfect throttle response and the best possible performance of their machines while complying with legal noise and exhaust gas regulations.
Nevertheless, many bikers hope to be able to improve the power output by intervening in the periphery of the engine. For example, by replacing the standard air filter with an accessory with a higher air passage. However, this measure often does not have the desired effect.
No wonder, since the otherwise neglected air filter plays a decisive role in the mixture composition of an engine: Due to the flow resistance that it opposes to the intake air, it influences the pressure conditions in the intake tract along with other parameters. Air filter elements with significantly lower flow resistance reduce the intake manifold vacuum at the same speed and throttle valve or throttle slide position. In the normal slide carburetor, the fuel / air mixture becomes lean, and even the constant pressure carburetor can only partially adapt the mixture to the changed conditions thanks to the vacuum-controlled gas slide. As a result, there is not only a loss of power, the combustion temperatures can also rise significantly and put more stress on the engine. Modern injection systems alone are able to keep the mixture composition and thus the performance development constant with the help of the recording of various parameters.
This is also confirmed by the test bench comparison of three allegedly performance-enhancing replacement filters from the accessories on a BMW R 1100 S. as well as one Yamaha YZF-R1. While the on-board computer of the BMW injection allows around 40 percent higher air throughput (according to K&N and BMC) almost compensated, the R1 equipped with carburettors reacts with significant losses in certain speed ranges. The replacement filters can deliver the promise of increased performance without time-consuming and costly adjustment work – which lead to the expiry of the operating license – i.e. neither with BMW nor with Yamaha.
