Triumph understood a long time ago that for a brand, cultivating its history could forge enthusiasm. Vintage has been in fashion for some time, while the English brand has offered a revival, the Bonneville, an emblem of its past, for 15 years. From the first 800 Bonnie in 2001 to its last versions in 865 cm3 (T 100, Thruxton, America, Speedmaster, Scrambler, special series …), this motorcycle provokes in all amateurs and neophytes a very traditional and timeless attraction.. Its main flaw was the limited performance of its parallel twin. Because sometimes, charm is not enough to have fun. You want the answer, the strength, something that lifts your heart when you turn the handle. Now, with its new and soft 1200cc engine block, the Bonneville T 120 can distribute muscle and sensations of higher caliber..
Why T 120? To pay homage to the 1959 model, capable at the time of taking 120 miles / hour, or 193 km / h. Not bad for a 47 horsepower twin, spinning a 4-speed gearbox. Over half a century later, the time has come for the Bonneville to once again show off your ribcage-busting strength, watts, and most importantly torque..
That’s the mission of the all-new 1200cc. An engine thought to offer fat, consistency without going for excessive laps. Very classic in appearance with its fins, it nevertheless looks modern and will surprise many people with its technology. We do not see it immediately, but the large radiator betrays water cooling. New on a Bonneville, and a guarantee of power, reliability and compliance with standards. 8 valves are in the cylinder head and ensure the breathing of an engine stalled at 270 ° to give character (360 ° previously). A new 6-speed gearbox appears, as does a Ride-by-Wire throttle control. And now, the smile and the thrill can get carried away: this new block develops more than 10 mkg of torque. 10.7 mkg to be precise, at a speed of only 3100 rpm. A startling difference from the 865 cm3. This represents a gain of 54%, and a new way of seeing the road in Bonneville. Power, a more relative notion on this kind of machine, is 80 horsepower. A performance of custom, but already enough to respond with enthusiasm to the demands of the road.
The ultra classic Englishwoman has decided to no longer be just the icon of the values of the past. Injecting and eradicating oil leaks is no longer enough for him. The Bonneville 1200 T 120 is now electronics escaped from the circuits. Now, driving a Triumph Classic is done through a choice of two injection maps, Road or Rain, and the assistance of anti-slip. There is even an anti-bribbling clutch for more comfort and calm torque feedback. ABS is fitted as standard, as well as a coded key immobilizer. And as an option, you can add a cruise control.
Need a little more comfort to ride? The heated 3-level grips are part of the game, as well as a USB socket under the saddle to charge your smartphone and other trinkets. The dashboard functions are controlled from the handlebars and the saddle announces more comfort. The driving position should satisfy everyone, with the naturalness and relaxation typical of this kind of machine. The central stand will be appreciated for regular interventions.
Need a neo feel in this retro? Take a better look at the headlights. Their function is now ensured by LEDs; the front uses it for a daytime visual signature. And although the counter has kept the same very vintage shape, the interior mixes the so British and the modern. The roller trips have disappeared in favor of small digital windows, in which are displayed the driving mode, the engaged gear, a double trip, the clock, the total mileage, the deactivation of the ABS and the anti -sliding, the maintenance indicator, and fuel information (average and instantaneous consumption, level and range). We will also remember the elegant calligraphy of the counters, with the added bonus of the double speed indication, in miles and km / h.
And yet, hard to see that so much has changed on this Bonneville. Put an 865 and a 1200 in the same yard and it will be hard to tell one from the other at first glance. With a little more observation, we can see that the T 120 is more opulent, more premium, gives more majesty. It also comes from the details that run through the machine. The badges provided with bronze on the brushed aluminum housings, the chrome parts, the serious front end with its two brake discs. And we find these little moments full of charm, such as the spoked rims, the sausage pots (with the deepest sound), the long and flat saddle, the hand-painted borders, and to flatter the sores and swageurs, the system of injection is always camouflaged by an imitation of carburettors.
More power, more pretension, more technique … you need a new chassis to handle that. We stay in the double tubular steel cradle style but Triumph adapts it to new constraints and modifies the suspension to improve handling. With its double disc at the front and its ABS, the 1200 Bonneville should offer much better decelerations..
In addition to the host of accessories that Triumph has planned to customize the Bonneville, it is possible to opt for the Prestige “inspiration” kit. It can be used as a basis for its own customization or can be completely assembled. Offering a higher level of finish and a “Heritage” theme, this kit consists of an authentic 4-stripe chrome tank badge, a knurled and stitched black seat, black LED indicators with transparent cabochons, mufflers chrome by Vance & Hines, black grips, as well as a chain guard, clutch and alternator covers and chrome throttle body covers.
Recall campaign:
In March 2019, Triumph launched a major recall campaign for its Bonneville and Street models manufactured between August 11, 2015 and January 13, 2019.
It is therefore the Bonneville T100, T120, Street Twin, Street Cup and Street Scrambler (or 68,686 motorcycles in the world) which were asked to go through the dealership for a problem of “clutch cable that could come into contact with the wiring of the main harness and damage it “, with a risk of malfunction of the lighting and indicators as well as loss of power.
