The sophisticated concept of the mid-range model as a full dresser met with a surprisingly large response from touring riders. But cheap offers from Deauville are rare.

Peter Limmert

01/10/2003

At first glance, the Honda looks Deauville rather inconspicuous with its somewhat chubby exterior. Tour riders, however, convince with solid virtues such as practical fairing protection, a comfortable seating position, integrated suitcases, a maintenance-free, low-reaction cardan and, last but not least, the smooth-running, proven reliable V2 engine known from Shadow, Africa Twin of the early years and Transalp.
Since the Deauville’s debut in 1998, more than 8,000 buyers have opted for the travel vehicle. Despite this impressive number of machines registered in this country, bargains on the used market are rare. Deauville owners obviously belong to a satisfied clientele who have found an inexpensive touring concept tailored to their needs in the successor model of the NTV 650, which the competition does not offer.
The Deauville offers a relatively generous amount of space for traveling as a couple, and you can either stroll around in a relaxed manner or do 180 km / h on the motorway at top speed. The modified three-valve V2 from the late 80s does its job in an unspectacular but indestructible manner. With valve clearance checks only every 12,000 kilometers, the maintenance effort is kept within limits. The two-cylinder is also frugal when it comes to gasoline consumption with around five liters, so that tourers can look forward to a range of almost 400 kilometers with a tank volume of 19 liters.
From 1998 to 2001 Honda offered the Deauville with 56, 50 and 34 hp. In 2002 the 50 hp variant was taken out of the range. Dethrottling costs around 33 euros, and choking costs 58 euros plus one hour of working time. Environmentally friendly used buyers can only shortlist the 2002 model with a clear conscience, as only this model with unregulated catalytic converters and a secondary air system meets the Euro 2 standard that will come into force in April 2003.
With this model modification, Honda donated not only a brighter headlight, but also the composite brake system, which also activates the front brakes via the foot brake pedal. In addition, the engine was able to run even more smoothly with lighter pistons, and the revision of the clutch and primary drive minimized running noises that sensitive customers had previously complained about as annoying. Honda also took the criticism of the somewhat low capacity of the permanently mounted plastic case into account. Instead of around 56 liters, which was previously possible with the optional interchangeable lid, there is now a maximum of ten liters more storage space available.
Unfortunately, owners of older vintages cannot benefit from these model maintenance measures because the cost of retrofitting is disproportionate. Due to the changed shape of the case, not even the larger lids from 2002 fit on the containers of the previous model. If you are only interested in the latest model and cannot find what you are looking for in the used trade, you should consider the offer from parallel importer ZTK: 7299 euros for a brand-new 2002 model.

Readers’ opinions – Honda Deauville

“The engine ran reliably for 30,000 kilometers and starts at the first push of a button in any weather” Stefan Will, Langen

“I improved the wind protection with a higher MRA touring windshield and the seating comfort with a bench with gel inserts” Mario Rothenburg, Erkelenz

»There are complaints about the hard-to-close case lid and the (alternative) draft shield that is too high, while the original was too short« Dietrich Werner, Elmshorn

“From Michelin Macadam, Metzeler ME Z4, Dunlop F 205 and Bridgestone BT 11/020, the latter pair convinced me in terms of good grip even in the wet” Peter Rene Schindler, Bruckberg

Inside interview with Peter Hartenstein – Honda Deauville

? Were you surprised by the sales success of the Deauville? No, the customer appreciates the independent tour concept.? Is the processing of the Deauville produced in Spain worse than that of the Japanese NTV 650? There were initial problems until after a very short time everything was under Japanese control. Does the engine revision have a positive effect from 2002? The driving behavior with the quieter engine and lower cardan reactions is significantly better.? In the MOTORRAD long-distance test of the NTV 650, the valve guides were over, which was certainly an isolated case. The motor is robust and problem-free like the NTV, there were criticisms of running noises in the clutch and primary drive up to model 2001.? What is the situation on the used market? The demand is higher than the supply. Unfortunately.

Improvement Tips – Honda Deauville

In two-person operation or during strong braking maneuvers, the fork quickly locks up. More progressive fork springs in conjunction with thicker oil stabilize the front wheel position. Providers include Wirth, White Power and Wilbers. Costs: from 80 euros. High-quality spring and damping components are offered by Wilbers, Ohlins and others from around 400 euros. Tourer accessories For the Deauville, Honda offers a wide range of accessories that are well received by customers despite their impressive prices. In addition to the standard, relatively small, permanently attached cases, we recommend a topcase for the remaining luggage, which costs 264 euros including the mounting kit. There are practical inner pockets for suitcases and top cases for 58 and 49 euros, respectively. In addition, the case can be increased in volume using larger lids (both for the older models and for the 2002 model) for around 330 euros. The original heated grips for 232 euros and leg shields (90 euros) are very popular in low temperatures and rain. Caution: When installing them, the vent hose of the carburettor must be shortened slightly to ensure the fuel supply. Taller drivers mount the higher version offered by Honda for 122 euros instead of the flatter standard window. Five Stars (79 euros) and MRA (76 euros) offer cheaper windows. If a top case is too bulky for you, you prefer to use a luggage roll from Ortlieb or a luggage bag from Bagster (116 euros). Tires With standard tires from Dunlop D 205 and Michelin Macadam 90 XB, some Deauville drivers are not satisfied when it comes to grip and concentricity. The Bridgestone pairing BT 011/020 and the Metzeler ME Z4, which offer more grip and more precise steering behavior, but hardly show any wear and tear, are unanimously more popular Honda not around as there are no inexpensive alternatives. To the base register (112 euros) there is a supplement (1999 to 2001) for ten euros or from 2002 for another 75 euros.
