Nishua is a brand of the Louis.de equipment manufacturer, offering a range of helmets with a very attractive price-performance ratio. NRX-1 Carbon is intended to be an integral racing, sleek and stylish, made of carbon fibers. Attractive, he pushes the racing spirit in every detail.

Test of the Nishua NXR-1 Carbon full face helmet

Discovery

Carbon, metal inserts, dynamic details, sport line…. the Nishua NRX-1 Carbon imposes it as soon as it comes out of its cover or its supplied transport bag. The shell is particularly elegant and sporty, noticeably notched in the lower part. Aerodynamics and style make up an attractive package. Towards the front, a line reinforces the volume of the chin, while two ribs come to dress the back, the highest forming a stabilization fin.

Four concealable air intakes equip the Nishua helmet. Two sliding shutters on the chin bar release micro-perforated plates, leading inside to grids. At the top of the helmet, two controls slide on their supports with sharp cuts. Two other elements house extractors plunging on the back. All these ventilations have the particularity of exhibiting their fixing screw, reinforcing the mechanical aspect of NRX-1. It will also be easier to replace an element..

The two front ventilations are completed by rear extractors

Anti-UV, the visor accommodates a Pinlock anti-fog screen. Tilting in five notches, the visor pivots on plates imitating carbon. A slender rocker on the left side allows the screen to be locked in the closed position. Flexible, a nasal deflector breaks the air flow, but does not direct the chin guard to the screen.

The base of the helmet is also neat, the foams sporting topstitched synthetic reinforcements. Long and padded, a bib blocks any draft under the chin. On the other hand, a spoiler on the neck optimizes aerodynamics.

The Nishua NXR-1 Carbon presents a particularly successful style

The chinstrap, thin and flexible, is fitted with a double D buckle…. in carbon. A rather rare detail. Wide and long legs lined with velvet are inserted, but not sufficiently fixed along the strap. Finally, a pressure allows to fix the end of the strap in order to avoid its slamming.

Last point, you will have noted on my test model, the dedication of Tom Sykes, number 66, 2013 WSBK champion on Kawasaki…. Your copy will, of course, be free of this prestigious signature..

Threading

Made of carbon, the hull is only produced in two sizes, which the trim then comes to dress to decline the helmet in 5 sizes (XS – S – M and L – XL). Coated with an elegant two-tone black and red interior, resolutely sporty, fully removable and washable, the foams are equipped with the Emergency-Strap safety system (facilitates the removal of the helmet in the event of an accident).

Soft but firm, the interior is also cut for sporty driving

The interior fabric is soft, but the comfort is firm, probably due to a size 58 so at the limits of the smallest shell. The chin bar seemingly lower than on other helmets and the fairly open neck reinforces the impression of a certain minimalism where only efficiency counts. The welcome is sporty, but not unpleasant and the lightness is immediately noticeable. With 1.150 g, the NRX-1 Carbon plays the stylish feather. At the upper level of the skull, the covering consists of nets, optimizing the passage of air and comfort in hot weather. Moderately thick, the linings ensure correct comfort, clearing the ears.

The interior perfectly accommodates the temples of glasses, allowing an impeccable positioning and without painful pressure even on long journeys. Happiness for moles and other visually impaired people including me, or more simply in case of too strong light. Because the Nishua NRX-1 does not yet have a tinted visor in the catalog. Side clearance is average and would benefit from being extended.

Flexible, the jugular requires a little dexterity, especially to undo. The use of a carbon buckle is undoubtedly not unrelated to the delicacy of the fabric of this strap. Care will also be taken to position the comfort legs correctly..

Dynamic test

Adjusting the visor in succession of notches somewhat limits ease in the low position. The penultimate leaves the screen fairly open, pleasant in the city, less on expressways in cool weather. However, the well-sized nasal deflector maintains comfort. Closed, the helmet is perfectly waterproof and the locking control easy to handle, although a little thin. Although the screen has a lug too far laterally, its opening does not move the helmet, but the mechanism lacks softness and the notches are a bit noisy.

The chin bar air intakes are effective, providing a pleasant flow on the lower face, even at low speed. However, the handling of the lids is not easy and the grip relief too discreet. But above all, the absence of ducts directing the air towards the screen generates, in urban evolutions in extreme conditions (negative outside temperature), water vapor even on the Pinlock. However, this proves the good insulation provided by the anti-eddy flap. The mist is then evacuated as soon as you pick up speed, chased by the nozzles coming from the top of the helmet. Although small, the top lugs slide easily, but, again, not smooth. The ventilation is correct, doubled by the effect of the extractors.

The helmet maintains good aerodynamics even at very high speeds

In the long run, the Nishua NRX-1 delivers average soundproofing, quite bearable over medium distances. The audio plugs are anyway recommended for long journeys, regardless of the helmet worn. On our model, we especially retain the general comfort and particularly its aerodynamic stability. Even at very high speed during the circuit test of a hypersport, Kawasaki ZX10R, this helmet is forgotten and does not generate any major frontal pressure at more than 270 km / h! Here again, the sound level remains acceptable with an original exhaust. In competition condition and suitable silencer…. the matter is quite different.

At 38 ° C on the track, the fabric showed excellent absorbency and remarkable drying capacity. And, easily removable, the linings will quickly regain their original freshness after washing..

Even on the track and at 38 ° C, the fabric wicks away perspiration well

Finally, the thick varnish can mark quite quickly if you lack of care. A scratch-eraser or polish type product will effectively mask the ravages of time.

Visor disassembly / assembly

Often a weak or annoying point of our headgear, the screen system of the Nishua NRX-1 is one of the simplest and most effective. Each pivot incorporates a central pusher releasing the visor. Extremely simple. Putting back in place is almost as fast.

Conclusion

Attractive and efficient, the Nishua NRX-1 Carbon is a good discovery. Beyond its always attractive material, its sharp design quickly attracts attention. Its lightness and aerodynamics are a real plus, both in everyday life and in intensive use, relieving the neck. Perfectly finished, with qualitative components (screwed plates, carbon buckle, pleasant fabric) adjusted flawlessly, it offers very good comfort. It will be criticized only for a few ergonomic faults, relating to its ventilation controls and the absence of an air flow on the visor. But at € 299.99, the full Nishua already gives a lot. We will oppose him the Airoh T600 at 239 € and the Shark RSI Carbon priced at 399 €, both much heavier..

At just 300 euros, the NRX-1 is a real alternative for the track

If, like most bikers, you don’t ride in the winter or a little in the cold weather, the NRX-1 will probably be your first carbon helmet. Its quality of manufacture ensures you, moreover, a certain longevity. Extremely rewarding, it is also an object to contemplate or to be contemplated. A strong argument for such a light helmet.
