How far can you go in 24 hours with an electric motorcycle? MOTORRAD tried this out together with Zero and Pirelli. Where? On the DEKRA high-speed test oval at the Lausitzring.

The neck hurts. Anyway, as far down the head as possible, offer as little drag as possible. Not to go faster, no that zero S is set to exactly 100 kilometers per hour at full throttle. But to use less energy and maybe do a lap or two more on one charge. As many laps of almost six kilometers each as possible should be completed in 24 hours in order to break the existing world record.

Ice packs for the battery

When 15 percent of the remaining energy is reached, the battery is charged, until then you have to drive to the limit, observe the instruments, sometimes change your sitting posture, the throttle grip is clamped. Sometimes 106, sometimes 112 kilometers in one turn. The second Zero laced past with 113 km / h. It will be exciting to see which motorcycle can do more laps in the given time – the faster one or the one that hopefully needs less energy and has to charge less and can get back on the slopes faster.

In the DEKRA-Test-Oval we have to take the innermost lane, which we are not allowed to leave in the two banked curves, because only this one lane is certified for the world record with a length of 5,826.9 meters. It is the number of laps that counts, not the distance on the zero counter – so we must not cheat by shortcuts.

But driving is not really important, it is routine. In the electronics sector, time is gained through charging. And here the Zero people have come up with a lot: A wallbox, four chargers and an additional one with a Schuco plug can bring in up to 110 amps of charging current. The 14.4 kWh battery is full again within an hour. In order not to damage it, the core temperature is measured and controlled. Additional ice packs help, the zero technology works purely with air cooling.

Zero S manages 222 laps

The others hear the whistling of the electric motor louder than we do, because even at 80 km / h the wind rustles more violently in the helmet than anything else. Over time, the faster Zero is there earlier and earlier, on Sunday morning the two machines are hardly on the track together. It’s fresh, around six in the morning, the colleagues saw a fox during the night, he is said to be the only animal on the test site alongside rabbits. That is a good thing, with the sitting posture there is hardly any reaction, a collision would be inevitable.

In the last turn, Nico can run the battery empty, give the last few minutes full throttle in sport mode, there are 140 things in it. Feels really fast, after a good 600 kilometers with a speed limit of 100. Maybe there will be one more lap before the end on Sunday at 13:06, exactly 24 hours after the start.

In the end, Nico rolls over the finish line with three percent remaining energy in the battery. David Schlosser from Zero, who brings the faster record Zero to the finish in the final laps, is already there. The slower machine at 100 km / h did 222 laps, that is 1,293.57 kilometers, the faster set motorcycle with 113 km / h did 226 laps, which is 1,316.88 kilometers. The previous record in the Guinness Book is 806 kilometers, unofficially an Energica already covered 1,260 kilometers this year.
