Supersport 2017: Cluzel back at Honda PTR
After three seasons at MV Agusta – and two runner-up titles – Jules Cluzel will be back in 2017 with the team that hosted him in World Supersport: the Honda PTR team, with whom he had already finished second in the WSSP championship.. Explanations.
The readers of Site – who, as everyone knows, are a little more passionate than others – remember that it was in the company of the Honda PTR team – and alongside a certain Sam Lowes – that Jules Cluzel had the category World Supersport, then dominated by … Kenan Sofuoglu !
As a reminder, the French "rookie" had won four times – as much as Kenan "himself" – and had hoisted his Honda CBR600RR on four additional podiums. Our favorite No.16 had finished his first season in second place in the SSP World Championship, 21 points behind the No.54 Ninja.
After a lightning stint in World Superbike – a season on the Suzuki Crescent, marked from behind Loris Baz! -, Jules then launched three years in a row in search of the Supersport world title, this time at the helm of the official MV Agusta.
Contrary to what the rankings of "Julo" indicate, the best of his three seasons with the Reds of Varese is undoubtedly the second: in, our compatriot made a magnificent rise in the standings and was only 13 points behind Sofuoglu – him again ! – while there were still three events to go.
Stopped dead in his remarkable momentum – six podiums in a row! – by one, Jules found himself out of the race and failed in fourth place overall, his worst result in World Supersport to date. However, he recorded his best score on the handlebars of the F3: 155 points in 12 races (210 points in 13 races on the Honda).
This year finally, "Julo" snatched two victories (in and in) and climbed three other podiums. Unfortunately not enough to compete with Kenan Sofuoglu, the Ninja n ° 1 strong as a Turkish, who finished 74 points in front of our compatriot, again second in the general ahead of Krummenacher, Jacobsen and Smith.
For 2017, "Julo" leaves the Reds of Varese and finds the Reds of Tokyo: our compatriot will try again to win his first world title at the controls of a Honda which is a little old, certainly, but still good, especially when it is prepared by the PTR team sponsored by the insurer CIA Landlord Insurance.
In the example, Jules Cluzel and his factory F3 finished third behind the five-time Supersport world champion Kenan Sofuoglu and his three-time champion ZX-6R, themselves beaten – by 0.006 seconds! – by Kyle Smith … and his CBR600RR !
The Briton, who drove this season in the PTR team, precisely – but will spend next year at Lorini, still on a Honda -, also distinguished himself by signing four lap records in the race in 2016, one more than the extraordinary Tuuli and two more than Sofuoglu.
Next year our French chicken will team up with Swiss scorpion Robin Mulhauser and Japanese samurai Hikari Okubo (a fourth PTR pilot is expected). Jules Cluzel will have a lot to do: Kenan Sofuoglu will line up again on his Kawasaki … and our compatriot of the factory Yamaha team !
