Wunderlich starts at the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb

Wonderful with a brave project

BMW specialist Wunderlich will start the 2017 edition of the legendary US mountain race Pikes Peak International Hill Climb with a specially built racing BMW.

Ka job for amateurs: Pikes Peak, if you start here, you have to know what you’re doing. The hill climb in Colorado, USA, is legendary, stands for brilliant victories and deadly dramas. For over a hundred years, the best rally cracks as well as the elite of road racers have been competing against each other to measure engines, strength and driving skills in the 156 bends of the 19.99 kilometer mountain route.

195 kilos and 143 hp

The summit road, which climbs over 1,440 meters in altitude, has only been paved throughout since 2012. In 2017, BMW specialist Wunderlich will be the only German team to compete with a BMW R 1200 R specially built for the race. Only at the end of February did the Rhinelander get a binding start from the organizers in the USA. But the preparations have been going on for much longer: with its own parts, Wunderlich has slimmed down the boxer by 36 kg to 195 kg ready to drive, and tuned it from 125 to 143 hp with different camshafts, pistons, connecting rods and machined cylinder heads. Thilo Gunther (37) from Bielefeld was signed up as the driver. The multiple winner of the fishing port race will compete against an armada of KTMs, Ducatis, Kawas and Hondas on Sunday, June 25th, on Pikes Peak, from the lightweight 450 to the 1290.
