“Welcome to the Dark Side!” Is how Yamaha welcomes the 2020 model year. The motorcycle models are now looking more aggressively across the portfolio, but in addition to visual updates, Euro 5 is also an issue, supplemented by a new tricycle.

Tobias Beyl

02/18/2020

With all the love that we journalists feel for the German language, we also like to use English terms. “Facelift” just sounds better than “face lift”. And the simple word “look” can mean both “look” and “sight”. That’s why it fits so well when we ascribe a new and aggressive “look” to the revised Yamaha models – because they now not only look more similar on the front, they also look more uniform across the model range.

From MT-125 to YZF-R1M

Starting with MT-125 and MT-03 up to R1 and R1M. But as is so often the case: don’t let your looks dazzle you! It is always the inner values, the technical data, that count. And here too has Yamaha Working hard: The Tracer 700, probably one of the highlights for 2020, is just as Euro 5-compliant as the YZF-R1, both comfortably without any significant loss of performance.

A completely new addition is the city-friendly Tricity 300, like the well-known Tricity 125 and the Niken with two front wheels, but in contrast to these, it can now also be driven with a driver’s license. The FJR 1300 says goodbye after 2020, so this year it comes for the last time as the final special model “Ultimate Edition”.

Yamaha MT-125

Yamaha in the 2020 model year

Yamaha.

Yamaha MT-125.

For 2020, the MT-125 will receive all of the upgrades that its super-sporty sister, the R125, received last year: variable valve control, upside-down fork, wider 140 mm rear tires, revised gearbox and even an anti-hopping clutch. In addition, there is a visually more aggressive-looking lamp mask with LED position lights and a shorter rear area above the new aluminum swing arm.asdf

Yamaha YZF-R 125

Yamaha.

Yamaha YZF-R125.

The two kilos more weight compared to the MT-125 can also be explained by the fairing, but the largest part is made up of the 1.5 liter larger tank. Technically, they both rely on variable valve control, the R125 since last year. Equipped in this way, it consequently, unsurprisingly and deservedly, won the test in the MOTORRAD group test of the current 125 cc.

Yamaha YS 125

Yamaha in the 2020 model year

Yamaha.

Yamaha YS 125.

An e-bike without charging? You could almost think of the YS 125: its tires are hardly thicker than those of mountain bikes. However, the range is a realistic 450 kilometers. The best of both worlds. With 10.6 hp it is not that powerful, but its low weight and 18-inch wheels allow effortless handling and easy maneuvering. And the whole thing is even rounded off with a gear indicator.

Yamaha also offers a large number of 125 cc scooters in the 2020 model year. Also included are the Yamaha D’elight 125, the Yamaha Nmax 125, the Yamaha Xenter 125 and the Yamaha Xmax 125. A tricycle is also on offer with the Yamaha Tricity 125.

If 125 cc is not enough for you, there are numerous other options. There are also some highly developed scooters in the Yamaha model range in 2020. Interested parties can choose between the Yamaha Xmax 300 / Tech Max, Yamaha Xmax 400 / Tech Max, Yamaha Tricity 300 and the Yamaha Max 560, which is also available in an even better version called Tech Max.

Yamaha MT-03

Yamaha in the 2020 model year

Yamaha.

Yamaha MT-03.

Model revisions are not always recognizable from the outside. With the new MT-03 very much. Like the small MT-125, it now looks through a much more aggressive lamp mask, which houses two angled position lights and an LED headlight placed in the middle below. The front is reminiscent of the MT-09 and MT-10 and visually underlines the affiliation to the “Master of Torque” series and its slogan “The Dark Side of Japan”. Yamaha has also given the MT-03, which weighs 168 kilograms, a technical upgrade: from 2020, the front wheel will be guided by a 37 mm thick upside-down fork, while the rear shock absorber has been given a new set-up. The front and rear LED indicators and the LCD cockpit are also more modern. And finally, the 14 liter tank has also been redesigned and, in combination with the now higher mounted handlebars, should ensure a more ergonomic and at the same time more agile seating position. The MT-03 is available for 2020 in Ice Fluo, Icon Blue and Midnight Black.

Yamaha YZF-R3

Yamaha in the 2020 model year

Yamaha.

Yamaha YZF-R3.

The small R cannot deny racing genes like that of the big R1, especially since the revision last year: improved aerodynamics, more aggressive seating position and sportier chassis. The small in-line twin helps the light racer with its 42 hp to achieve decent performance, pushes with a lot of torque at the bottom, nice and powerful in the middle – and at the top it celebrates cheerfully and cheekily up to almost 11,000 tours. Not very sporty, but very beginner-friendly: the low seat height of 780 millimeters.

Yamaha YZF-R6

Yamaha in the 2020 model year

Yamaha.

Yamaha YZF-R6.

The R6 was the last of its kind for a long time, but after Kawasaki’s ZX-6R, Aprilia is now also launching a mid-range super sports car with the RS 660 – with lean angle sensors and an impressive electronics package. The R6 has to dress warmly in the 2020 model year. Or follow up with an update for 2020. Although it rolls with six-stage traction control and an automatic gearshift, it does not have lean angle detection on board. Not yet. For this she could use the R1.

Yamaha MT-07

Yamaha in the 2020 model year

Yamaha.

Yamaha MT-07.

The MT-07 still has to wait for the facelift, which MT-125, MT-03 and previously also MT-09 brought in a dashing, somewhat aggressive-looking and two-part headlight. The mid-range naked bike is also not yet attuned to the Euro 5 emissions standard. It doesn’t have to be. Since the touring sister Tracer 700 was already presented with the Euro 5 manifold in autumn 2019, it can be assumed that the MT-07 will not only receive the facelift for 2021, but also the same Euro 5 update. After all, the last facelift was two years ago (2018). Yamaha’s concept of the uncomplicated motorcycle, which is nothing special, but simply works well, continues to work: As usual, the MT-07 is still the most popular Yamaha and the second most popular motorcycle in this country. It recorded 3,707 new registrations in 2019. Its 689 cm³ crossplane engine is also used in the Heritage model XSR 700 and in the Enduro Tenere 700.

Yamaha Tenere 700

Yamaha in the 2020 model year

Yamaha.

Yamaha Tenere 700.

Bigger is better? Less is more? Or is it: enough is enough? The Tenere 700 impressively proves how much fun is possible even with a comparatively small displacement and power, if the overall package is right. The power of 73 hp is easily enough for the slim weight of 204 kilos with a full tank, its (rear-adjustable) chassis copes well with all conditions and unevenness, and driving modes, settings and connectivity are actually not missed in use. At least that is the verdict of the MOTORRAD top test. Compared to the XT 660 Z Tenere, which was dropped from the Yamaha model range in 2016, the 700 Tenere is significantly slimmer, more accessible and stronger. And so it promises to be a loyal companion not only when traveling, but also in everyday life. How faithful, a MOTORRAD endurance test has had to prove since the end of November 2019. The Tenere is available in Ceramic Ice, Competition White and Power Black as well as with the Explorer package (2,003.84 euros) or the rally package (1,733.95 euros).

Yamaha Tracer 700

Yamaha in the 2020 model year

Yamaha.

Yamaha Tenere 700.

The Tracer 700 has been extensively revised for the new model year, which can be seen at first glance on the completely redesigned, surprisingly slim front. With slanted LED position lights and two LED projector lamps underneath at the top of its half-fairing, it shows clear borrowings from both the MT series and the super sporty R1. Also clearly visible in the photos: the new exhaust system. Where previously the two manifold pipes snaked harmoniously downwards, they now come together much earlier. That might not be very nice, but it makes the new Tracy Euro 5 compliant without having to accept any significant loss of performance. 1.6 HP is missing on the data sheet, but it makes up for it with its other upgrades: for example, hand protectors above the new LED indicators, LCD cockpit with colored accents, one-hand adjustable windshield, wider handlebars, more comfortable seat and adjustable chassis. It is available in three different colors.

Yamaha XSR 700 / XTribute

Yamaha in the 2020 model year

Yamaha.

Yamaha XSR 700.

Heritage, Modern Classics, Neo-Retro – whatever we want to call it, it is a still flourishing market that Yamaha serves with the XSR 700, among other things. The lines should be reminiscent of the XS 650 from 1976, but the drive and technology come from the MT-07 in keeping with the times. The color variant Racing Red shown with lots of white and golden rims is new for 2020. The XTribute variant with a flatter seat, off-road handlebar and bellows on the telescopic fork continues to appear in the usual color scheme.

Yamaha Tracer 900 / GT

Yamaha in the 2020 model year

Yamaha.

Yamaha Tracer 900.

The Tracer 900 is the sporty touring machine that is powered by the three-cylinder MT-09. When it comes to model updates, the little sister Tracer 700 is driving away for the 2020 model year. She has to wait until the next facelift for the front with fresh cladding parts, narrow LED position lights and the two LED round headlights attached below the cladding. In the course of this, Yamaha will also take care of compliance with the Euro 5 emissions standard.

Yamaha MT-09 / SP

Yamaha in the 2020 model year

Yamaha.

Yamaha MT-09.

The MT-09 has had two-part LED headlights since its last update in 2016. The winglets and slats that are currently so modern have also been emblazoned on their radiator sides for years. At the beginning of the 2020 model year, however, it will not yet have the completely new Yamaha face worn by MT-03 and MT-125. It is also not used with the new Euro 5 emissions standard, but this is not yet necessary in your case. It wouldn’t be uncommon for Yamaha to come around the corner for its popular three-cylinder naked bike with an update towards mid-2020. Then most likely also with manifold pipes that merged into one another earlier, similar to the new Tracer 700, which thus maneuvers the catalytic converter closer to the outlet. In addition to the automatic gearshift for faster upshifts, the anti-hopping clutch as well as the adjustable traction control and the adjustable spring – everything also on the standard MT-09 series – the more noble and 1,200 euro more expensive SP version could possibly still be updated in the course of an update Treat yourself to tilt sensors.

Yamaha XSR 900

Yamaha in the 2020 model year

Yamaha.

Yamaha XSR 900.

The well-known and popular crossplane treble of the MT-09 works in the XSR 900 – only in a much more classic design. The larger of the two XSRs comes with a hand-sewn seat bench cover, aluminum tank covers, black-washed frame tubes, round headlights and a round rear light. Yamaha describes the 900 XSR as a “homage to the XS 850” from the 1980s and is bringing it for 2020 in the new color variants 80 Black (200 euros surcharge), Racing Red and Garage Metal.

Yamaha Niken / GT

Yamaha in the 2020 model year

Yamaha.

Yamaha Niken GT.

The Niken was able to impressively refute initial skepticism, but it is still an exotic sight on German streets. It won’t be because of your engine, because it is also used in the MT-09, Tracer 900 and XSR 900 and is beyond any doubt. The immense grip on the front wheel – sorry, on the front wheels – is a key argument in favor of the heavy, but surprisingly handy Niken. And as a GT variant, which will be available in a new red and gray color variant in the 2020 model year, it is also a comfortable tourer.

Yamaha SCR 950

Yamaha in the 2020 model year

Yamaha.

Yamaha SCR 950.

The abbreviation SCR should probably stand for Scrambler, which goes well with the coarse profile and the not-so-low seat height of 830 millimeters. But at the same time, the SCR 950 also shows a great visual similarity to soft chopper classics of the 80s. And it was created from a chopper, namely from the XV 950 on the right. Timing belts, little ground clearance, long wheelbase and ample weight are not virtues that you would recommend for fun on bends or off-road fun.

Yamaha XV 950 R

Yamaha in the 2020 model year

Yamaha.

Yamaha XV 950 R.

Sport is not necessarily the core competence of the XV 950 R, but it is also part of Yamaha’s “Sport Heritage” range. Heritage because it was modeled on classic Yamaha motorcycles. As a hybrid between chopper and cruiser, it embodies the trend back to the real, hearty, reduced: double loop frame, straightforward line, air-cooled 60-degree V2. But actually it is a modern motorcycle – with nimble handling characteristics, low seat height and an extensive range of accessories.

Yamaha YZF-R1 / R1M

Yamaha in the 2020 model year

Yamaha

Yamaha YZF-R1M.

The YZF-R1 and the even better equipped R1M were the first Yamaha bikes to tackle the Euro 5 hurdle for 2020 – with complete success. In the MOTORRAD driving report, the two superbikes were able to prove how well a motorcycle can function even under the stricter conditions: No reduction in performance, on the contrary – there was even a newton meter of torque on top; and at high speeds, the performance is also better thanks to the new cylinder head, optimized intake side and new cam profiles. But the chassis has also been revised on the Kayaba fork, the shock absorber and the steering damper; in terms of electronics, the previous Unified Brake System (UBS) has been replaced by a Brake Control System (BC) with adjustable (cornering) ABS. From now on, Yamaha packs the whole thing in an aerodynamically optimized fairing in the style of the MotoGP machine M1. The R1M is made of carbon, and the M version comes with a semi-active Ohlins chassis.

Yamaha MT-10 / SP / Tourer Edition

Yamaha in the 2020 model year

Yamaha.

Yamaha MT-10.

The chassis of the R1 athlete also serves as the basis for three naked bike variants: the MT-10 as a classic naked bike, the more elegant SP variant with electronic Ohlins chassis and the Tourer Edition equipped with suitcases, comfort seats and a high windshield. As standard, they all come with adjustable suspension, traction control, anti-hopping clutch and quick-shift system. In 2020, the standard and touring variant will be available in Ice Fluo as well as blue and black, the SP in Silver Blue Carbon.

Yamaha XT 1200 Z / ZE Super Tenere / Raid Edition

Yamaha in the 2020 model year

Yamaha.

Yamaha XT 1200 ZE Super Tenere.

The large travel enduro is available as a Z in the standard version, which rolls up with aluminum wire-spoke wheels, a height-adjustable seat, cruise control and traction control. As a ZE, it also comes with an electronically adjustable chassis, heated grips, base plate for a top case and center stand. The equipment variant “Raid Edition” is offered for the ZE variant and costs 17,995 euros. Then there is also a high windshield, fog lights and aluminum cases for a total of 74 liters of luggage.

Yamaha FJR 1300 A / AE / AS / Ultimate Edition

Yamaha in the 2020 model year

Yamaha.

Yamaha FJR 1300 AS.

Well, congratulations, the FJR is entering its 20th season! Yamaha confirms that it will probably be the last with the Ultimate Edition of the endurance runner. Over the years it has hardly changed externally, frame, engine, optics, seating position, everything corresponds to the debut from autumn 2000, which rolled out to dealers in spring 2001. There were Euro 3 and Euro 4, larger brakes, ABS, TCS, electronics, cornering lights, a new cockpit and, on the AE model, an electronically adjustable chassis. An automated manual transmission without a clutch lever makes it easier to select gears on the AS model if required. It has always had an electrically adjustable windshield, height-adjustable bench seat, suitcase suitable for everyday use, cardan shaft and this wonderful in-line four-cylinder with two balance shafts. Whatever is always true: that the almost 300 kilograms only get in the way when maneuvering. The smallest mountain roads, the autobahn, even on the Nordschleife, she feels at home. It sweetens everyday life with comfort and range, only for hot summers and city traffic there is better.
