The Diversion can now count on its double stripped to satisfy the new biker clientele. Since the demise of the XJN / XJS duo in 2002, an access model was sorely lacking in the Yamaha lineup. The 78 hp FZ6s did try to fill the void, but they were still in the top class. A little 7-year-old station wagon and presto, the XJ 600 is back; and her name is XJ6 today.
The mid-size XJ philosophy remains as some have come to know it as we searched for the magic pink paper: to deliver an easy-to-access, reasonably-priced, do-it-all bike with the right mix of power. The 2009 XJ6 respects these codes. But no way to look sad, because the competition is in full swing. So Yam put a little emphasis on the design of the trim, with an FZ1 headlight topped by a ruby-shaped night light, sharp radiator scoops, a small engine guard and a few plastic pieces to enhance the appearance. With its slender rear end free of the muffler (it’s tucked away under the engine), the XJ6 really looks good. Its profile contrasts with its big competitors: it seems incisive and muscular, when a Honda CBF wants to be wise and reassuring, while the Kawa ER-6n wants to be fun, playful and slender. The Bandit seems more impulsive.
On the technical side, no need to bother with a Superbike chassis, useless (and expensive) for its customers. The XJ6 has a diamond-like frame with steel tubes. New, simple, functional, it accommodates a new engine also taking the 4-cylinder architecture of the FZ6, itself derived from the R6 2003. Cylinder head, crankcase, camshafts, intake / exhaust systems, clutch and selection have been revised to fit the XJ6. Widely redesigned, it strives to offer flexibility and availability, to best stick to a widely versatile use. This carton is therefore displayed in the same yard as the machines in the same segment. The comparison in engine will be tight against other Japanese – The evolution is however much more marked if we refer to the data of the old XJ: it was equipped with an air-cooled 4 legs with 2 valves per cylinder of 61 ch. Its descendant is equipped with a liquid-cooled engine, twice as many valves, and 78 hp at 10,000 rpm.
With the wave of street-fighters who have landed in recent years, it’s strange to find a bike with wise values, much more suited to our “safe” environment. The chassis data tell us a nice bike, not particularly playful but not tricky either. A wheelbase of 1440 mm, a caster angle of 26 °, a conventional fork of 41 mm, dual piston brake calipers and optional ABS – Nothing sporty but fun and functional under a seductive dress.
Standardization requires, the XJ6 takes over the dashboard of the FZ series. By choosing classic elements, like the simple swingarm, a bulb taillight, a braking system more than sufficient without being a front axle of R1, a steel frame and a widely tested engine, this new Yamaha should afford to display a very reasonable price. Like the late XJ6, but more modern.
And for those looking for a little protection or something to do a little bit of the road, don’t forget that the XJ6 is doubled with the Diversion version, equipped with a good size fork crown..
