More beautiful, lighter, more powerful, more agile … the new R6 promises to have become even more captivating. Let’s see ! With a lot of preconceptions, hope and emotion, because the old one was a hell of a machine. A pocket-sized ballerina, pure sportswoman without concession who only lived beyond 10,000 rpm. Nothing before, big watts after !
In appearance, the new YZF does not confuse. She has sharpened, seems to have taken genes from R1, and the finish leaves the competition far behind. Its new frame, which is both lighter and more rigid, benefits from the latest Yamaha manufacturing technologies. A superb piece where the welds have practically disappeared. Same treatment for the swingarm which becomes an element of rare purity.
The trackwoman also stole her dashboard from the R1. We will thus have the joy of affording the services of a programmable shiflight. Almost complete, all that is missing from its instrumentation is the fuel gauge. Engineers maintain that the driving position has been significantly revised. Yeah! Certainly on paper, but for the pilot, it’s a white beanie and a white beanie. The saddle provides a minimum of comfort but otherwise, it’s sport with all that follows. Troubling in absolute terms, the position becomes the handle of the sword when this thin blade performs on the circuit. But before we get there, we are surprised by the change in engine behavior. Formerly “on-off”, the boiler is more voluntary in the zone below the 5 digits. The box has also made progress. Getting out of town is now (almost) no longer an ordeal.
Well, we’re not here to watch the grass grow … A forceful rotation of the right hand will unleash the potential of the new 4-cylinder block. As the needle approaches 10, the mechanics give heart and then frees the cavalry. The power is plentiful but more available than on the old generation. It’s less brutal, less impressive while remaining consistent. It must be said that the goodwill of the engine in lower revs reduces the “boost” effect when you go up in the towers. The machine does not lose efficiency; quite the contrary. Less busy taming the fire of the machine, we can concentrate more on its conduct. Always so incisive, the part-cycle however put a little water in its wine. Agility excels, handling too. It even becomes more conciliatory on dubious tarmac, terrain where the GSX-R 600 dominates the supersports clan. Slightly delicate to dose on the track, braking deserves only praise when called upon on the road.
In its new livery, the R6 gained the injection, lost weight and also an ounce of its character. It remains a weapon, further refining its sporting potential. Even more seductive, its beauty will make you forget its minimalist protection and its Spartan comfort.
