The FZ8 is dressed this year in the superb WGP 50th anniversary colorway. In 2012, the tuning fork mark celebrates 50 years of competition. Suddenly, a whole slew of models take on this particular design. It replicates that of the MotoGP M1 during the Laguna Seca and Assen 2011 rounds, itself inspired by the Grand Prix Yams in the 60s – 70s. The roadster takes the opportunity to equip itself with a small engine spoiler, an Akrapovic exhaust, but no changes in view on the suspension side. Much more flashy, the Yam streetfighter seems more turbulent here. Like what, colors can capsize many senses.
Because design question, we can not say that Yamaha took risks with this roadster. He smells of FZ1 a mile away. Same chassis, same style, same inverted fork, same rear axle. This is the same policy as Kawa with his Z, whose 750 is a scaled-down clone of the 1000. Okay, that’s not exactly an exact cut and paste either. Slight differences appear at the level of the airbox cover, the side plastics of the tank, the ridges under the passenger seat – the EXUP has cleared, as have the discreet radiator scoops. The real difference and stylistic identity of the FZ8 is its carefully flipped and aggressive headlight. Supported by the gold inverted fork, the front end of the FZ8 is not a kid at heart.
Enclosed in the large aluminum frame, the 4-cylinder inaugurates a new displacement at Yam. With 779 cm3, the FZ8 is stacked on top of the 106 hp barrier. But what interests us is the torque available with this increase in displacement. The FZ8 comes out 8.4 mkg, that is to say 2 mkg more than the FZ6 and a bite more than its main competitor, the Kawasaki Z 750. In the absence of EXUP, Yam has put above inlet nozzle injectors of different dimensions: 125 mm for cylinders 1 and 4, in the center, 150 mm for cylinders 2 and 3. Thanks to the physical properties of the pressure waves, these ducts optimize filling and inflate the curves. As for the character of the boiler, it should be quite close to that of the FZ1. This “small” 800 is a reduction of the 1000cc, itself derived from the R1 hypersport. The piston stroke is exactly the same (53.6mm) while the bore has shrunk by 9mm to 68mm. A technical choice that favors the couple and their availability. The almost 8-liter air box goes in the same direction.
The technical platform of the FZ8 differs from that of its brother 1000 only on anecdotal points. A smaller rear tire, a few pounds less, a smaller tank (- 1 liter) and that’s it. The cost rationalization policy favors cloning, and this FZ8 is truly an FZ1 on the part-cycle side. And there is no reason to complain. We don’t have much to complain about its range: the diamond-type aluminum frame with the engine as stiffener, the 43 mm inverted fork, non-radial but very efficient 4-piston calipers, a superb swingarm…. hidden on its right side by a terrible saucepan. Admittedly, this opinion is very subjective, but without dèc….
Yamaha takes the opportunity to sweep its range of roadsters to see a little more clearly in its hierarchy. The FZ6s are gone, the access machines are the stronghold of the XJ6s; the FZ8s take care of the midrange; and for the amateurs of big cavalry, the FZ1 sound the charge. This roadster is particularly in the limelight and eagerly awaited around the corner. On his shoulders weighs the legacy of 250,000 Fazers sold since the appearance of the model in 1998. But from there to find the fantastic compromise of the first generations of 600 FZS ….; since 2004, a more sporty trend has taken hold. How the FZ8 will combine the new decade ?
