The devices are so reliable

They fit well in your pocket on tour and belong in every hobby workshop: air pressure gauges. The little helpers only have one task: to show the exact inflation pressure in the tire. But how reliable are the devices? MOTORRAD tested 14 products in the laboratory and in practice.

Review: Hobby enduro rally in Greece a good ten years ago. Special test deep sand driving on the beach. All participants – with the exception of the author of these lines – pulled out their air pressure testers, lowered the inflation pressure of the tires to zero-point-hit-me-dead bar (more precise information was guarded like a state secret) and dashed off. The author, on the other hand, literally missed the test because he was traveling with too high air pressure in the rubber cleats. This is how it often goes: It’s the little things that make the difference.

On the racetrack or at off-road competitions, air pressure gauges are part of the normal equipment. Adventure travelers are also well advised to always have an air pump and examiner in their luggage. Because traveling all over the world – sometimes with a full, sometimes with a slimmed-down load, sometimes on asphalt, then again on gravel or sand – the correct tire inflation pressure is an important criterion in terms of driving safety. Differences of up to one bar are common, depending on the load and the condition of the track; on the racetrack, even 0.1 bar plus or minus on the tire decide where the seconds are.

Check the air pressure at least every two weeks!

It is not only advisable to buy an air pressure tester for frequent motorcycle riders, but also for avowed occasional riders. With annual mileages of less than 3000 kilometers, it is obvious that the machine will occasionally stand still for weeks. If you then go on a joyride with the wrong inflation pressure in the tires, you can wake up badly. Naturally, with tubeless tires, a small amount of air always escapes through the rim, especially with cast rims. But the tire valves usually do not keep one hundred percent tight either. The front wheel in particular reacts very sensitively to insufficient air. The steering forces increase, while stability and steering precision decrease at the same time. When braking in an inclined position, the righting moment increases sharply and endangers driving safety.

Read more about this here: Driving behavior with changed air pressure

The recommendation of workshop professionals: check the air pressure at least every two weeks! But even a barely noticeable, only small deviation from the target inflation pressure has consequences: higher tire wear – and this is noticeable in the wallet. Buying an air pressure gauge too. But a maximum of 30 euros – this is the requirement for this product test – is an affordable sum. MOTORRAD also checked air pressure gauges for more than 100 euros in the laboratory and in practice, out of competition, which, however, could not distinguish themselves from the U-30 euro products presented here in terms of accuracy or handling. Fortunately, the good overall result proves that even with inexpensive devices, there is hardly any compromise to be made compared to much more expensive professional equipment. So for little money you get reliable control over the air pressure – therefore: don’t hesitate, buy!

This is how MOTORRAD tests

14 air pressure gauges in the test

Dentges

It’s not just about accurate air pressure.

It’s about accurate air pressure. But not only, because readability and handling of the devices are also important when they are used a lot, were also rated. On five test machines with different wheels and valves, the testers tried out how easily the individual devices can be put on and whether this is even possible. In this practical test, the testers simultaneously checked deviations in the air pressure display using series measurements.

Under controlled laboratory conditions, the pneumatics specialist Festo was able to determine even more precise values on calibrated measuring instruments. Three air pressures relevant in racing and everyday life were approached to check the display accuracy of the products.

Final scoring

14 air pressure gauges in the test

Thorsten Dentges

Conclusion

That’s great: Even for little money there are air pressure gauges that you can rely on almost across the board. And even the cheapest device for a little more than a Heiermann is enough for low demands and a rough orientation as to whether you are traveling with the correct air pressure.

However, it is more advisable to use the very precise candidates, such as the digital examiners from Topeak, Oxford or SKS. The beautiful analog tester from Rothewald also looks good in the workshop. This is especially true for motorsport enthusiasts when deviations of 0.1 bar make a difference in lap time.

There are big differences in the value of the devices: from rickety plastic shells to finely rubberized metal housings. And a better feel can easily cost a few euros more.
