2013 Honda CB 500 X

Trail has been making a strong comeback at Honda for some time, but in a definition far removed from the original spirit. No more FX 650 and Africa Twin; the weather is that of SUVs, like in a car. It is also the niche of this CB 500 X, the most accessible and certainly the most playful of the X in the Honda range.. Its style is largely modeled on that of the big 1200 Crosstourer, offering it a certain and rewarding size. Lots of plastics in this trim, where everything is well organized, clean, carefully built – Honda, what.

The 500 X is built on the same basis as its sisters CBN and CBR. A practical way to multiply the models while controlling the costs. Its chassis is very simple: a main beam 35 mm in diameter where the engine acts as a stiffening element, a 41 mm fork, a single shock absorber with 9 preload adjustment positions, a petal brake disc per wheel and 17 inch rims. No need for more, the machine not having vocation to make the supermot or the arsouille but driving pleasure and town planner. With a more upright driving position and suspensions offering more travel, the CB 500 X is more comfortable than the N and R. larger and larger tank of 1.5 liters.

The new generation CB 500s share the same inline twin. Equipped with 471 cm3, this block is cut exactly for the A2 license. It delivers the maximum amount of power authorized for young people allowed: 35 Kw. Let’s talk rather in ch, will you. So we were saying 47.5 horsepower, and a torque of 4.4 mkg. Let’s not dwell on the manufacturing methods using certain technologies related to the construction of the 4 cylinders of the CBR 600 and 1000 RR, but on two essential points: consumption and revs. The twin announces a thirst of 3.7 liters per 100 km. Combined with the capacity of the tank of 17.3 L, here you are in the presence of a machine with a range of 467 km with a full.
Within the X, it is difficult not to draw the parallel between this CB 500 and the NC 700. Twin in line for both, close positioning, but the block of the CB should be more fun to whip. The NC sends its watts (5 hp more) at 6,250 rpm while the CB asks to be taken to 8,500 rpm. The 700 is more generous in torque but here’s something to tip the scales. You like a coiled driving without trying to take turns, opt for the NC 700 X; you prefer when things go up, playing with a more incisive right hand, eyeing the CB 500 X. Do not get carried away either, this is not a 990 Supermoto…

195 kilos. It is much more than the weight of the “old real trails”, those which passed as well in town as in the forest. This weight is however very close to that of the CB 500 of the great era. Let’s stop with nostalgia, because the X is part of the new trend: the fun side and the adventurous aspect, even if it means never putting the wheels between the ruts. Of the three CBs, this one will offer the most protection and comfort. He seeks pleasure, economy and the style of adventure; and to convince you of it, he whispers to you a not yucky call price, under 6,000 euros, ABS included.
