Ikea Austria The new e-bike from Ikea

With "folklore" you can pedal relaxed. The furniture store Ikea sells its first pedelec – for 649 euros. However, experts are skeptical as to whether the bike is really a good offer.

Furniture, hot dogs and now also e-bikes: Ikea is expanding its range and is offering an electric bicycle (pedelec) for the first time. The e-bike costs 649 euros for members of the Ikea family program, 749 euros is the regular price. So far, however, the pedelec is only available in the Swedish branches and in Austria. As can be read at Ikea in Austria, the bike has been available since March 12. buy may.

Load 500 times

The bike doesn’t exactly look like a cheap hardware store bike, but almost like a designer bike. It is called Folkvanlig. "The motor sits in the front wheel and has 250 watts. It is powered by a battery that can be charged 500 times before the full performance drops by around ten percent. One battery charge lasts for a range of around 50 to 70 kilometers. Then the battery has to be connected to the socket", reports the blog "E-Bike News".

Two year guarantee

The battery, painted green, blends harmoniously into the design of the white wheel and is removable. Ikea states the total weight of the bike including the battery at around 25 kilos. The frame is made of aluminum and the front fork is made of steel. A Shimano circuit with three gears and six power levels with the electric drive should make cruising easier. "Ikea gives a two-year guarantee on all parts of the wheels (except for normal wearing parts such as tyres, chains and brake pads etc.), spare parts can be reordered", says Ikea in Austria.

Cheap or good?

But how good is the e-bike at a competitive price from the furniture store? Without having ridden the bike, Ulrich Frieb, test manager of the magazine E-Bike-Magazin, is rather skeptical after a first look at the data sheet: "A front wheel hub motor is a very simple drive solution. Even a three-speed circuit is not necessarily state-of-the-art. We test around 80 e-bikes a year, and in our experience you only get really reliable and good e-bikes from a price of around 1800 euros," says Frieb.

It remains to be seen whether the Ikea pedelec will also come to Germany. At the request of Site-Online, a company spokeswoman from Sweden said that a decision had not yet been made.

  1. Only a mid-engine is a good engine
Wheel hub motors always have the same torque on the wheel axle. Your performance is up … Wheel hub motors always have the same torque on the wheel axle. Your performance on gradients is simply bad. And just there is a good support. Since I sold my old e-bike with wheel hub motor and have a Bosch mid-engine, slopes become pleasure. Because only then is the power of the engine translated by the gearshift. I find the Ikea offer unsuitable.

  2. Power 36W
Can’t be. Even at a speed of 22 km/h on the flat you need about 100 W. Pedelecs normally have an output of up to approx. 250W.

  3. Read wrong?
"The motor sits in the front wheel and has 250 watts." it says so in the text above. or ham wa because voltage and power confused the 36 V would probably get there

  4. we always have something to complain about
I drive an electric scooter from China and have been for a good 7 years – well, I’ve had a flat tire twice, that’s it . I paid 500€ and in Germany the part would cost 1300€ – still asking ?

  5. can not, too little
It can’t be 36 W because every light bulb has more power. 36 V (volts) will be correct and then refers to the battery voltage / Editor’s note: Thanks for the information, we have corrected the error
