We all know the B license or the A license for motorcycles. There is also the AM license. It was formerly called the Road Safety Certificate (BSR). This category of driver’s license allows young drivers aged 14 or over to operate a light moped or cart.

AM license: how to get it and what are the specificities?

What is the AM license and how to get it ?

The BSR has been replaced since January 19, 2013 by the AM category of the driving license. To drive light mopeds or quadricycles, but also carts, people born on or after January 1, 1988 must hold an AM license. People born before January 1, 1988 are exempt.

The AM permit is obtained after two courses: the learner begins by following a theoretical training provided at the college and validated by the issue, in 5th grade, of the 1st level school road safety certificate called ASSR1 or by the issue in 3rd grade class of ASSR2.

To take the ASR test, all you need to do is register with a GRETA, a group of National Education establishments. If you are in an apprenticeship, you must register for the ASR exam at an apprentice training center.

The event, which is free, takes place twice a year, in March and October. To pass this test, you must answer a multiple choice questionnaire on theoretical knowledge of road safety rules.

The ASR is issued to people who have obtained at least a score of 10/20. Warning, being the holder of the ASR alone does not allow you to travel with a motor vehicle !

After obtaining the ASR, the candidate must undergo practical training, provided by a driving school or by an approved social or professional integration or reintegration association. Lasting a total of 8 hours, this practical test spread over two days includes instruction in off-road driving, a driving test on traffic lanes, and finally awareness training on the risks associated with driving in an urban environment.

Since March 1, 2019, regulatory equipment (approved helmets and gloves, high boots, suitable jacket and pants) is required to pass the assessment of category AM.

The specificities of the AM license

This permit, which can be obtained from the age of 14, does not come under the points permit scheme. he is valid for 15 years from the date of issue. This validity is written on the document. Any license authorizes the driving of category AM vehicle. For example, if you hold a car or motorcycle license, you can drive all vehicles of the AM category.

Note that the AM license, unlike the BSR, allows you to drive light vehicles throughout the European Union. ASR is also compulsory to obtain a first driving license if you are under 21 and do not have the 2nd level ASSR. This is the case, for example, if you have not been educated in France.

What can I drive with the AM license ?

This license gives the right to drive certain two-wheelers; to know a moped with a cylinder capacity less than or equal to 50cm3 (motorcycle, quadricycle or scooter) and whose speed is limited by the manufacturer to 45 km / h.

Also, the AM license allows you to drive a car without a license. These carts and small quads must have a displacement less than or equal to 50 cm3 for gasoline engines, or less than or equal to 4 kW for a diesel engine.

How much does AM license training cost?

Practical training costs between 150 € and 400 € in driving school. Registration is done via the teleservice set up by the National Agency for Secured Titles. You will need to attach the following documents:

  • ID ;
  • proof of address ;
  • 1 digital identity photo;
  • if you were born in 1988 or after, certificate of completion of the BSR practical training, accompanied by the ASSR 1 or the ASSR 2 or the ASR;
  • if you are over 17 and under 25, copy of the individual certificate of participation in the defense and citizenship day (JDC);
  • proof of payment of the regional tax if it is due in your department.

The AM license and license suspension

An offense committed while driving a cart, for example, does not give rise to a withdrawal of points if the driver also has a B license.

On the other hand, according to the law of June 12, 2003, in the event of withdrawal or suspension of a car or motorbike license, following a serious offense such as driving while intoxicated, “the ban on driving certain land motor vehicles, including those for whose driving the driving license is not required, for a period of five years at most ”can be pronounced.
