Aprilia is strengthening its positions on the hot front of the roadster. The Tuono is in place and it is now time to attack the heart of the market: the mid-range. And the best way to get noticed quickly is to offer something new, curiosity, technological.
The Mana 850 is going to stir up spirits, and not just fans of twin-cylinder roadsters. More than a new Italian machine, it is also the first roadster with an automatic gearbox. Well almost. A prototype was unveiled by Gilera a few years ago: the Ferro 850, with a different face but very similar technical solutions.
Of course, there is already the Yamaha FJR 1300 AS, also equipped with an automatic gearbox (sequential would be fairer). Except that Mana is aimed at a much larger audience, certainly delighted to discover the virtues of automation, particularly in the city..
At the controls of Mana, several choices are available to you. Case n ° 1: you select a driving mode – Tourism, sport, or rain – you drive, and the electronics take care of the rest.
Case n ° 2: you want to play with the box and the small commodos (or the selector, as desired). Switch to manual, forget the clutch handle, and take advantage of the 7 speeds available. This succession of gears, combined with an all-new 839cc V-twin, will certainly influence a smoother and more pleasant ride..
While the attributes portend a marked predisposition for sport – inverted fork, radial mount brake, trellis frame, MV-Agusta Brutale-style headlight), it seems the emphasis has been on usability. This is evidenced by the “measured” power of the engine and its torque, their availability being more favorable in intermediate speeds; as well as the presence of a large chest hidden under the false tank, capable of accommodating a full face helmet. “How do we do it to refuel? Uh … well, you lift the rear seat. Lol!”.
Aprilia’s approach is courageous and deserves more than interest. Disrupting the habits of bikers is not easy, but isn’t that how we made a name for ourselves? ?!?
