If you don’t feel like having a permanently installed tank ring or are tired of the annoying lashing of belt systems, magnetic tank bags are the best way to go. They can be clicked on the tank in no time at all, and they only have a strap attached to secure them, which is quickly wrapped around the steering head. But anyone who opts for magnetic adhesion should check whether the tank on their motorcycle is actually made of sheet steel. Because many manufacturers are now installing lightweight plastic tanks that are cheaper to produce, for which the specimens tested here are not an option – unless an alternative strap is included for fastening.

MOTORRAD judgment and final evaluation

The positive verdict from this test: Whether on the round tank of an older Suzuki SV 650 or on the modern, angular design of the current Triumph Street Triple RS – all test candidates followed the physical arrest warrant – even on the highway beyond the recommended speed. In general, nobody in the test field makes a major faux pas. However, some innovative solutions run counter to the basic idea of ​​a tank bag. In addition to easily accessible main and secondary compartments, durable material and sensible rain protection, there should be enough space for a smartphone, wallet, multi-tool, chain spray and toothbrush. In the best-case scenario, the volume can be expanded without restricting the driver’s freedom of movement and without impairing driving dynamics. Still very important: viewing windows for maps or navigation systems.

At the end of the day, Vanucci’s magnetic tank bag won the test.

Two tank bags achieve a “very good” rating, followed by five test participants tied in third place. Overall, almost the entire field of participants can be attested to suitability for everyday use and reliability, and all participants also showed themselves to be trustworthy when it came to the subject of grip and driving stability. In this respect, all tested tank bags are suitable for small or large excursions. The main differences are in the accessibility of the compartments and the equipment, especially when it comes to moisture protection. The best buy is the Kappa LH 200 – the cheapest tank bag in the test costs just a third of the Vanucci test winner at just under 50 euros.

What would the editors use??

Fastening a tank bag using integrated magnets is usually quick and uncomplicated, but requires a sheet steel tank. Fewer and fewer motorcycles are delivered with one, however, the majority of bikes currently have a plastic tank. Magnetic tank bags are not suitable for these. In the test, the Triumph Street Triple RS was used, which has a metal tank as well as many existing motorcycles. A disadvantage of magnets: the direct and strong adhesion can cause unsightly scratches.

Fastening a tank bag using lashing straps is practically the universal solution: the material of the tank does not matter, the only requirement is some way of securing the straps to the bike safely and without fluttering. As a rule, this is done using a loop around a frame tube or a boom, the other end of the strap is then clipped into the bracket provided on the tank bag. Problems arise when there is no attachment point on the frame, as can be the case with fully enclosed machines.

Tank ring

Quick release systems require neither a sheet steel tank nor fastening options for straps on the motorcycle. Depending on the provider, these tank ring systems have different names such as Quick Lock, Lock-It or Tanklock. For the fastening ring, which is firmly attached to the filler neck, around 50 euros are due in addition to the actual tank bag. In return, the tank bag can be flanged on and off conveniently in everyday life and without the risk of scratches. A disadvantage is the mostly only small size or the small luggage volume of the products.

Five questions about the ideal tank bag

1. Which system? There are three types of fastening to choose from: with magnets, lashing straps or with a tank ring. Almost more important than the system, however, is the fit: motorcycle tanks are sometimes narrow, sometimes wide, some are very long and rounded, others wide and angular. The ideal tank bag is the one that can be securely attached to the motorcycle – and that offers plenty of storage space.

2. How much volume? Ten liters: Petite tank bags are pretty, but only hold the most important items. They go great with sporty motorcycles if you want to be out and about in a leather suit without bags. Ten to 20 liters: good all-rounders for short to medium-length excursions. They hold an emergency ration of food and drinks, usually have a map or navigation compartment and also swallow chain spray and rain gear. They are also the best choice for smaller purchases. More than 20 liters: These tank bags are usually quite high and can therefore restrict visibility and freedom of movement. They are out of place for the pure attack on the country road, but they are recommended for long tours that require a lot of luggage.

3. What to pack? In the tank bag there are mainly things that you have to be able to get to quickly during a short stop: wallet, papers, cell phone, map, camera, drinking bottle, rain cover, visor cleaner, etc. Sleeping bag and gas cooker are better stored elsewhere.

4. How to stow? Basic rule: heavy pieces on the bottom, light pieces on the top. Tip: it is best to store electronic devices between cushioning parts such as a rain suit or sweater so that they are protected against vibrations. Several outer compartments and a separate compartment for smartphone, keys and wallet are useful. A divisible inner compartment is an advantage.

5. Theft protection? Even if many zips can be secured with a lock: the tank bag can usually be removed from the bike as a whole without any complications. It is therefore best to always do that. Commercially available anti-theft devices are only intended for fuel stops and coffee breaks when the bike remains in the field of vision.

Motorcycles often have completely different tank shapes. An old SV 650 was therefore also used as a test tool.

Testing a tank bag does not just mean attaching it to the motorcycle and seeing what fits in. All test candidates went through the following extensive test procedure twice with two different test editors: First, it was checked whether the features promised by the manufacturer actually exist and fulfill their purpose. We immediately tested the quality of the material, the workmanship of the seams, the accessibility of the main and secondary compartments (both on and off the motorcycle) and the usefulness of the division. Then the weight of each tank bag is determined.

We carried out driving tests on an older Suzuki SV 650 and the current Triumph Street Triple RS. Among other things, the duration and effort of the assembly, the distribution and the strength of the built-in magnets, the usability / visibility of the card compartment (if available) and the handling of the rain cover or the inner bag were checked and evaluated. While driving on winding passes in southern France and during high-speed tests on motorways in Germany, we checked the stability, slip resistance, tendency to flutter, possible obstructions to the view of the instruments and potential restrictions in freedom of movement / driving dynamics.
