10 short motorcycle gloves in the test
10 waterproof short gloves tested
Are they safe at all??
Can safety-conscious motorcyclists even pick up short gloves, or do they not even have to wear gloves? No, because well-made specimens are safe and score points with moisture protection, ventilation and comfort. Ten short pairs in the test.

Short motorcycle gloves combined with a waterproof, breathable membrane – these were our requirements for the participants in this glove test. There were no price specifications, which is why the test field ranged from a cheap 70 to a justified 150 euros.

Big differences in equipment
Relatively independent of the price, depending on the manufacturer’s philosophy, there are sometimes clear differences in the features: Many test participants have a rubber lip on the left hand to wipe raindrops from the visor, but not all. Areas at risk of falling can be reinforced by textile, leather or plastic, the ankle protector is sometimes made of carbon, sometimes made of plastic and sometimes not at all. Incidentally, this is not absolutely necessary for certification as a motorcycle glove: The approval required in France, for example, can also be achieved without ankle protector; in this case, under the important motorcycle pictogram in the glove, there is only the specification of the protection level, but not the additional abbreviation KP . This certifies that the protector on the back of the hand has standard-compliant shock absorption properties. In our test, Macna and Spidi on this certification, Difi comes surprisingly completely without approval. In Germany, the latter is not a legal problem, but abroad it may look completely different.
Motorcycle gloves in the wetness test
Speaking of foreign countries: All gloves in this test were produced in Asia, even if development takes place in Germany, Italy or Belgium. Of course, that doesn’t have to be a problem, almost all test participants liked the good workmanship. At least initially. Unfortunately, it looks different during the wetness test: Only three pairs survived the immersion bath and the filling test without any problems! Light to moderate rain showers should also be able to cope with the other candidates, but a sad result.
Contra short gloves
A central safety feature in this test – and an argument that is often cited against short gloves – is the anti-slip protection: in the event of a fall, the glove must remain securely on the hand, even if it has been sliding for a long time. Quite a few Velcro fasteners in the test fail here, while other gloves are in no way inferior to the versions with long cuffs.

1. Alpine Stars “Belize Drystar”
mps photo studio
Providers: Alpinestars
Price: 149.95 euros
To dye: Black / gray / red, black / brown / red
Sizes: S to 3XL
Materials: Cowhide, polyamide, knuckle protector made of carbon, finger and palm slider made of TPU plastic, lining made of polyester
Climate membrane: Drystar
Country of Manufacture: Indonesia
Certification: Level 1 with ankle proctector
Conclusion: The Belize Drystar of Alpinestars is the safest and sportiest glove in the test, unfortunately it shows weaknesses in the wetness test. The fingers are relatively long, so more like a glove for narrow hands.
MOTORRAD verdict: good
2. Dainese “Solarys Short Gore-Tex”
mps photo studio
Providers: Dainese
Price: 139.95 euros
To dye: black
Sizes: XS to 3XL
materials: Polyester and polyamide with goatskin and suede, stretch inserts made of spandex, ankle protector made of plastic, lining made of polyester
Climate membrane: Gore-Tex
Country of Manufacture: Vietnam
Certification: Level 1 with ankle proctector
Conclusion: The Dainese Solarys Short is a very comfortable glove with weaknesses in the anti-slip protection. Due to the only mediocre ventilation and the warm lining, it is particularly recommended for the transition period between spring and autumn.
MOTORRAD verdict: good
3. Difi “Troy Aerotex”
mps photo studio
Providers: Motor port
Price: 74.95 euros
To dye: black
Sizes: S to 3XL
Materials: Goatskin, polyamide, polyurethane, ankle protector made of carbon, lining made of polyester
Climate membrane: Aerotex
Country of Manufacture: China
Certification: No
Conclusion: If the Difi Troy Aerotex had certification as a protective glove for motorcyclists and another entry point with stretch material, it would be a very comfortable short glove. However, there is still room for improvement.
MOTORRAD verdict: satisfactory
4th. hero “Madoc”
mps photo studio
Providers: hero
Price: 99.95 euros
To dye: black
Sizes: 7 to 12
Materials: Nyspan stretch fabric with cowhide trimmings, palm and ply made of goatskin, knitted cuff made of polyester, hard shell ankle protector covered with leather, lining made of polyester
Climate membrane: Gore-Tex
Country of Manufacture: Indonesia
Certification: Level 1 with ankle protector
Conclusion: Great quality and numerous convincing features – the Held Madoc secures the full number of points in the area of equipment / workmanship and scores more than decent in all areas. Deserved test winner!
MOTORRAD verdict: very good, MOTORRAD test winner
5. iXS “Tour ST-Plus short”
mps photo studio
Providers: Hoststettler
Price: 79.95 euros
To dye: black
Sizes: S to 3XL
Materials: Goatskin, polyester, polyurethane and elastane, knuckle protector made of TPU plastic, lining made of polyester / silver ions
Climate membrane: Solto-Tex
Country of Manufacture: China
Certification: Level 1 with ankle proctector
Conclusion: The iXS Tour ST-Plus, which is also available with a long cuff, impresses with safety, processing quality, comfort and a pleasant fit. He easily failed in one of four wetness tests, so he narrowly missed the verdict “very good”
MOTORRAD verdict: good
6. Macna “passage”
mps photo studio
Providers: Macna
Price: 69.95 euros
To dye: black
Sizes: S to 3XL
Materials: Goatskin, polyester, polyamide and polyurethane, knuckle protector made of TPU plastic, lining made of polyester and polyurethane
Climate membrane: Raintex
Country of Manufacture: China
Certification: Level 1 (no ankle proctector)
Conclusion: The Macna Passage is a warm glove for the city or short trips. It is comfortable and well made, but fails the shock absorption test – because it does not have an ankle protector.
MOTORRAD verdict: satisfactory
7th. Modeka “Sonora Dry”
mps photo studio
Providers: Modeka
Price: 79.90 euros
To dye: black
Sizes: 6 to 12
Materials: Goatskin and polyester on the top, kangaroo leather on the palm, polyamide and polyurethane, reinforcements made of epoxy resin (“Super fabric”), Polyester lining
Climate membrane: Porelle
Country of Manufacture: Pakistan
Certification: Level 1 with ankle proctector
Conclusion: The Modeka Sonora Dry is a great, comfortable, high-quality and above all inexpensive glove for mainly warmer weather. Alternatively, it is also available without a membrane, then also in short and long sizes with colored accents.
MOTORCYCLE rating: very good, MOTORCYCLE buyer’s tip
8. Rev’it “Hydra H20”
mps photo studio
Providers: Rev’it
Price: 84.99 euros
To dye: black
Sizes: S to 4XL
Materials: Goatskin, polyamide, polyester and polyurethane, hard shell knuckle protector with nitrile rubber, 3M Thinsulate lining
Climate membrane: Hydratex
Country of Manufacture: China
Certification: Level 1 with ankle proctector
Conclusion: Rev’it classifies the Hydra H2O as a winter glove, but it also cuts a good, safe figure in spring or autumn. Points are deducted because of pressure points on the fingers and slight weaknesses in the wetness test.
MOTORRAD verdict: good
9. Richa “City Gore-Tex”
mps photo studio
Providers: Richa
Price: 99.00 euros
To dye: black
Sizes: S to 4XL
Materials: Goat and cow leather, polyamide, ankle protector made of PVC, lining made of polyester
Climate membrane: Gore-Tex
Country of Manufacture: China
Certification: Level 1 with ankle proctector
Conclusion: The Richa City GTX is a well-made, reliable, and comfortable glove. In high temperatures it is too warm, but in spring, autumn and winter it is just right. Only the stripping protection would have to be tighter.
MOTORRAD verdict: good
10. Spidi “Bora H2Out”
mps photo studio
Providers: Spidi
Price: 89.90 euros
To dye: Black, black / gray / neon yellow
Sizes: S to 3XL
Materials: Goatskin, synthetic leather, polyamide, polyurethane, suede microfiber, ankle protector made of carbon, lining made of polyester and nylon
Climate membrane: H2Out
Country of Manufacture: China
Certification: Level 1 (no certification for ankle proctector)
Conclusion: In the short test in MOTORRAD 26/2018, the Bora H2Out was reliably waterproof, but this time it failed both in the immersion bath and in the filling test. It’s a shame, because otherwise it’s an all-round great glove.
Conclusion
Almost all short gloves please with their proper workmanship. Unfortunately, only three pairs survive the immersion bath and the filling test without any problems. The other candidates should also cope with light to moderate rain showers. When it comes to the central safety feature – the scraper protection – many a Velcro fastener fails in the test. Other gloves, on the other hand, are in no way inferior to the versions with long cuffs. In this respect, motorcyclists can treat themselves to a couple of shorts with peace of mind.
