The Unitec foot air pump 10928 lands in last place. After 200 pumping strokes, the filling was interrupted, a significant pressure build-up was not possible. Suitable for inflating small beach balls, however. No miracles were expected for 3.99 euros – but not so little either.

Small, handy, practical: helper for working on the valve. Checking the tire pressure and making any necessary corrections often fail due to the lack of space: wheel or brake components prevent the pressure gauge and pump from being easily attached. Before you get your fingers dirty or break off, some people leave it alone. There are helpers in retail that make work easier for little money.

Here is the overall final rating.

The Heyner Pedal Max pro 225,000 won the race. The two-cylinder makes the singles look very old – this also applies to foot air pumps. If you don’t want to make friends with a hand / floor-standing air pump and don’t want a mini compressor, you can buy the pump for life with this heavyweight.

5/17
The SKS Original Racing Compressor is just over 1st place. Heavy, strong, (relatively) expensive – and an investment for life. The legendary racing compressor is not entirely perfect either: the pressure gauge could do a little more. Caution: There are four different valve heads – and not all of them fit well everywhere.

The Alca high-performance air pump 217100 lands on the winners’ podium. A lot of pump for surprisingly little money. Among the motorless pumps in this test, the Alca is clearly ahead in terms of efficiency and rightly bears the addition of “high-performance air pump”. The operation (hose) should be even easier.

7/17
Mini compressor doesn’t do the job well enough with the Airman Tour 52-074. The Knirps is an ultra mini and therefore perfect for on the go. Even fits into small (motorcycle) sockets, puts a lot of pressure on, but also sounds quite pithy. Good value for money.

The two compressors from Black are tied & Decker and Airman. The transition to the full-blown compressor is with the Black & Decker Airstation ASI300 fluently – at least in terms of dimensions. In terms of efficiency, however, a little more could have been achieved. The very convenient operation and the mains connection are good reasons to buy.

The Alca 180W High Power Compressor 207000 lands in 6th place. A rather inconspicuous device without serious weaknesses, but also without outstanding strengths. Well suited as a second pump next to a device operated with muscle power. The low weight and not too large housing make it mobile.

10/17
The Unitec Compressor Premium 10920 takes 7th place. The relatively heavy device does exactly what a compressor should mainly do: a lot of pressure in a short time. In addition, there is no such thing as chichi equipment or processing finesse. A rustic workhorse. Not more but also not less.

11/17
The Michelin high-performance compressor 92412 takes 8th place. Easy to use, well equipped, well made and relatively inexpensive – the somewhat playful and thoroughly likeable device has all systems to become a bestseller. If it weren’t for the issue of efficiency. Anyone who has patience still buys properly.

The Cartec foot air pump 231780 lands in 9th place. A classic foot air pump without a lot of frills. Due to the precise and perfectly readable pressure gauge and the simple operation, it differs from significantly cheaper models of the same design. The price is still a bit borderline.

13/17
The Bikers Dream mini foot pump (digital) took 10th place. The compact dimensions and the low weight make the tiny pump the ideal on-the-go pump. However, the well-made part is not efficient enough for larger workshop tasks. Also available with an analog manometer for 34.95 euros.

14/17
The Alpin aluminum hand air pump 72944 lands in 11th place. The lightweight is neatly made and fulfills its essential purpose. In a direct comparison with the Alca model, which is almost the same price, some lack of detail – keyword pressure gauge – are clearly noticeable and thwarted “Good”.

The Alca Compressor 12V Nonstop 220000 slipped past 11th place. A rather inconspicuous device without serious weaknesses, but also without outstanding strengths. Well suited as a second pump next to a device operated with muscle power. The low weight and not too large housing make it mobile.

16/17
The Draper Expert 22267 takes 13th place. Another classic from the series “You can’t go wrong with it”. In direct comparison, however, the solid, but inconspicuous part falls out, because in terms of operation and efficiency, some competitors can do significantly more.

Hand air pumps, mini compressors and foot air pumps

Whether hand air pump, mini compressor or foot air pump – one of them belongs in every well-stocked screw garage. The three types and 14 air pump models in a comparison test.

Now please do not come to us with the announcement “At my gas station the air is free – I don’t need an air pump test!” Reader – or you have never tried to get to the tire valve with a rather unwieldy gas station air pressure test lance between the cast wheel and the double disc brake.

Well, we understand each other: There is nothing like the almost contemplative control of the tire pressure in the garage at home. In addition to peace and tranquility, there are also cold tires there (the pressure values stated in logbooks and repair instructions only apply to such tires) and, with a little luck, cold beer. In almost every garage or workshop that has been screwed for a little longer, there is also an air pump corpse in the farthest corner, usually a representative of the genus Pedalo vulgaris, commonly known as hardware store cheap foot air pumps. Usually torn air hoses, crumbled plastic pressure gauges or just broken control parts with not really nice remains of idiot welds led to death.

14 air pump models from three categories

To make it short: Almost every hobby mechanic has already sold a huge amount of air pumps. Some even several times. In order to know in the future which devices can be used to press for a little longer than just one summer, MOTORRAD sifted through the extensive range and bought 14 air pump models from three categories.

13 pump models had consistently received decent ratings in the relevant online evaluation portals. In the case of one model, MOTORRAD was particularly interested in whether it might say something about the product quality if the (quite fair) shipping costs are about as high as the product price. We anticipate the answer: yes!

Clamping is faster, screws hold better

Whether it should be pumped by hand, foot or even electrically is almost a philosophical question. Hand-operated floor-standing air pumps have the advantage of providing plump rubber with usually significantly fewer pump strokes than their foot-operated sister models. On the other hand, they are more bulky, and whoever has a “back” will not really be able to make friends with them. Foot-operated bellows impress with their compactness, but their somewhat more complex mechanics, in connection with an inevitably somewhat more uncoordinated movement of the operator, are significantly more susceptible to wear than those of the manually operated pumps. On the other hand, foot pumps can usually be operated very easily by hand. Which is particularly advantageous if the hose connection does not want to stay on the tire valve by itself and a second hand is required. Try that with a hand-operated floor-standing air pump – have fun with the workshop Kamasutra!

Keyword hose connection: Whether it should be clamped with a lever or screwed with a nut is a matter of taste. Clamping is a little faster, screws often hold better and the said helping hand is unnecessary. However, a little more skill and speed are required when removing a screwed hose connection, because whoever takes too much time with this is usually punished with a loss of pressure and is allowed to repeat the exercise.

There is no egg-laying woolly milk sow among the test candidates

We come to the electrically operated mini compressors. They are operated via 12-volt on-board sockets, with board almost always referring to car-board, i.e. the large euro on-board socket. It’s rarely found on a motorcycle, so if you want electricity, you have to work with an adapter or use the cigarette lighter on the family car. Mostly, but not always, because two laudable exceptions can be found in the test field: The Airman Tour plug also fits into small standard sockets on motorcycles; and Black & Decker also supplies a second power connection that fits into the 230-volt AC voltage network, i.e. any household socket.

In addition to the power supply, you should also think about possible noise pollution before buying a mini compressor. These things may be small, but they are mostly loud as hell – and not a good idea to use them to go to the underground car park of the senior citizens’ residential complex on Sunday lunchtimes. The legendary egg-laying woolly milk pig is unfortunately not among the test candidates, but the test winner comes pretty close to the pump ideal: a two-cylinder wins!

Another classic from the “You can’t go wrong with this” series. In direct comparison, however, the solid, but inconspicuous part falls out, because in terms of operation and efficiency, some competitors can do significantly more.

MOTORRAD verdict: satisfactory

Man and machine: working pressure in the MOTORCYCLE workshop.

MOTORRAD bought the air pumps in July 2014 on the open market, mainly on the Internet via Amazon. For some of the deliveries, shipping costs were incurred, which are shown separately in the data boxes, but were not taken into account when assessing the price-performance ratio. Measuring and weighing were at the beginning of the test program.
The practical testing took place in the MOTORRAD workshop. The aim was to increase the inflation pressure of the front tire of the endurance test Yamaha MT-07 (Michelin Pilot Road 3, 120/70 ZR 17) from 1.5 to 2.5 bar (typical pressure loss during the winter break). The pump strokes required for this were counted or the time required for the mini compressors was stopped. The air pump pressure gauges had to prove their accuracy at 2.0 bar tire pressure. MOTORRAD determined the reference values with a precision pressure measuring device from Flaig. Statements on user-friendliness and processing quality were continuously recorded.

Filling tricks: done around the corner

Small, handy, practical: helper for working on the valve.

Checking the tire pressure and making any necessary corrections often fail due to the lack of space: wheel or brake components prevent the pressure gauge and pump from being easily attached. Before you get your fingers dirty or break off, some people leave it alone. There are helpers in retail that make work easier for little money. From left: extension adapter without pressure loss with drain valve (14.99 euros, Polo), two-part extension adapter set for car and bicycle valves (9.99 euros, Polo), valve extension (9.99 euros, Louis), angle valve for attachment (5 , 99 euros, Louis), tire angle valves for retrofitting (double pack 29.95 euros, Louis).

Final scoring & Conclusion

Here is the overall final rating.

The system question is not answered with this test: the test winner is a foot pump, followed by two hand pumps and two mini compressors. And in the broader field, too, things are pretty confused. With one exception, all test participants were able to correctly pressurize a motorcycle tire in an acceptable time. Everyone has to decide for themselves whether it should be decisive for the war that one model needs 30 seconds less than another.

Much more important is the question of ease of use, and in the long run the mini compressors are a little ahead of the curve. Anyone who only has to inflate a motorcycle tire can handle hand and foot operation just fine. If you also get four car tires in front of the inflation valve when you change your winter tires yourself, you can pump much more comfortably electrically. The very clever ones have both in their house: a manual and an electric bellows.
