Aid strips for motorcyclists
Pilot projects in Austria and Luxembourg

Luxembourg is following a successful example from Austria and installing auxiliary strips on the road to make left-hand bends safer for motorcyclists.

Based on Austria’s positive experience on the Grobglockner route (see below), Luxembourg has now also provided its first roads with special markings for motorcyclists. The lines applied across the road are intended to show motorcyclists the area of the curve in which the head and upper body protrude dangerously far into the opposite lane when the vehicle is tilted. Investigations by the responsible Luxembourg road traffic authority showed that 99 percent of the drivers oriented themselves to the new markings and took curves further out.

Pilot project in Austria (September 2016)

An Austrian study claims: Almost all bikers take left turns wrong. Stripes on the road should now show them where it’s safer.

It is still a pilot project and limited to ten routes in Austria. But the initiators of the Vienna “Kuratorium fur Verkehrssicherheit” are optimistic: just drawing circles can make bends safer for motorcyclists. The background to this is a study that states that 95 percent of the 800 motorcycle riders analyzed take left turns far too close to the center line and are therefore often forced to take dangerous evasive maneuvers if there is sudden oncoming traffic.

The ellipses in different sizes could help to fnd the safe distance to the center of the road and the correct turning point. The test routes would now be evaluated. If successful, the circles will soon be painted on danger spots all over Austria.
