Two-wheel ICE
Bayern had allowed themselves to be provoked by certain Japanese on their very own terrain long enough, but in 2006 it was over. BMW brought the ultimate two-wheel ICE: the BMW K 1200 GT.

When a powerful four-cylinder is combined with a chassis that is extremely stable even at over 200 km / h and the whole thing encompasses the best long-distance comfort for driver and pillion, plenty of space for luggage as well as good wind and weather protection, then of course you are talking about – you guessed it – a Yamaha.

More precisely from the 144 hp Yamaha FJR 1300. BMW had nothing to oppose to it in 2001, which was all the more annoying, since dynamic travel comfort should be a basic component of Bavarian motorcycle construction. One year after the FJR debut, BMW pushed the BMW, which was rather half-heartedly pimped up into a tourer based on the old K 1200 RS and “only” 130 hp K 1200 GT after something halfway comparable. With moderate success – the Yamaha remained the measure of all things.
New BMW K 1200 GT 152 hp
That went on until the EICMA in late autumn 2005. But from then on, the fun was over: A completely new uberTourer, which – a great idea – was given the unchanged name of its sad predecessor, was to serve customers interested in lavishly motorized long-distance comfort from now on. Completely new? Yes and no. Apart from the wheel sizes, the new BMW K 1200 GT had nothing in common with the longitudinal brick GT: 17 percent more power, eleven percent more maximum torque, six percent less mass, even 19 percent more payload and one that was 17 percent larger Reach was the impact that could be measured in numbers.
With the sister models K 1200 S and K 1200 R, which have been part of the BMW range since 2005, there was a fairly large congruence. New camshafts with tamer control times and an adapted engine management should, however, ensure that the torque curve was even more voluminous. That worked brilliantly, because the 152 hp BMW K 1200 GT dozed off the direct competition right away.

BC means on-board computer.
In the first comparison tests, the Honda Pan European and the Yamaha FJR 1300 A had to admit defeat; in the further course, the new Kawasaki 1400 GTR did not stand a chance. A few contemporary test quotations may clarify the why. Engine category: “The BMW K 1200 GT pulls through better in sixth gear than the rest of the test field in fifth.” Chassis category: “In nine out of eleven chassis criteria, it beats the competition. It is the handiest, most precise steering and the most stable in bends and on the autobahn. “
A powerful engine, top comfort and unswerving stability, even with a full load and at top speed – those were the pounds with which the K 1200 was able to grow. It is no coincidence that these are precisely the plus points that had previously made the FJR so successful. The BMW K 1200 GT was and is therefore far from being a perfect motorcycle. The loud transmission, the sometimes rough load change behavior and the brutally gripping but not overly finely metered brakes stand in the way, among other things. But it is definitely a super tourer bargain tip for used buyers.

Market situation
BMW
Large fairing, but quite narrow for a touring bike; Case and electrically adjustable windshield as standard.
Well-stocked offer, it tends to be more of a buyer’s market. Private offers start at 6000 euros, the cheapest dealer offers start at around 6500 euros.
6,489 EUR
Example: EZ 7/2006, 80,000 km, first hand.
Dealer offer from Baden-Wurttemberg; Price at the lower limit due to the many kilometers, but complete equipment, first-hand and very well maintained.

Example ad: 33,000 km, EZ 4/2008, HU 4/2016, second hand, black metal, ESA, xenon, topcase, checkbook checked, all recalls completed, 7750 euros (private offer from Bavaria).
Medium price level: There are already some good private offers of well-maintained machines for 7,000 euros, the mileage is then usually over 40,000. The largest selection is between 7,500 and 8,000 euros, and the mileage is then 30,000 to 50,000 kilometers.
from 8000 euros
Example display: 24,023 km, EZ 12/2007, new HU, second hand, blue metallic, ESA, ASC, RDC, xenon, on-board computer, top case, 8490 euros (dealership offer from Lower Saxony)

Interview with BMW dealer Karl Maier
Herder
Karl Maier (58). Urbayer. BMW dealer dyed white and blue for 35 years (www.motorrad-kmaier.de). And by the way, four-time dirt track world champion.
MOTORCYCLE: Who bought the new BMW K 1200 GT??
Karl Maier: Many from Yamaha have already come over from the FJR 1300, who said: “The hunchback is slowly coming to an end, we want to have something great.” A couple of ex-Pan-European riders were also there . And, of course, previous K drivers, the BMW customer is showing great solidarity there. A test drive was enough, the GT was practically already sold.
BMW: And who is interested in a used BMW K 1200 GT today??
Karl Maier: People our age (Editor’s note: the interviewer is 53 years old) who come from the Japanese four-cylinder, can no longer cope with its seating position and want to be more suitable for touring. But then they should already have a height of 1.75 meters upwards. For two with loaded suitcases and possibly a topcase, you need a standing man, then there’s also real driving fun.
MOTORCYCLE: Keyword extras: Have you ever come across a BMW K 1200 GT with basic equipment?
Karl Maier: Not really. With xenon, one or the other twitched and didn’t want it, but ESA and ASC all took it. But once I got a used one without ESA – then you were the third winner, and the price slipped at least 1000 euros below the normal retail price.
MOTORCYCLE: What is the ultimate Karl-Maier-K-1200-GT-used-buy-screwdriver tip??
Karl Maier: It is essential to have the timing chain replaced after 60,000 kilometers. There’s an improved rate for 175 euros, and wages are just about the same.
