Second hand BMW sports boxer
Content of
a time when the combination of a sports motorcycle and BMW provoked scornful laughter. But for country road drivers, the qualities of sports boxers appear in a completely different light.

When the first rumors surfaced in 1997 that BMW was planning a sporty motorcycle, the scene was in a state of excitement. When the first tests appeared in 1998, both BMW friends and critics saw themselves confirmed. The Japan and Italo factions were reassured that they were in no danger from Munich on the racetrack with 98 hp and around 240 kilograms of combat weight, while the Bayern fans were happy that despite all the sporting advances they did not follow the typical BMW Properties such as long-distance comfort, travel and pillion suitability had to do without.
R 1100 S.
In a region where adult men are not embarrassed to walk around in short lederhosen and knee socks, it is not surprising that idiosyncratic ideas about sports bikes prevail. Even if the highly entertaining Boxer Cup as part of the MotoGP at the R 1100 S. was held, this is basically a formidable country road motorcycle because of its air-cooled heart. According to the style of the house, the first-time buyer had the opportunity to configure his S to suit his taste. ABS was practically compulsory. Components, which are rather unusual for the athlete genre, such as heated grips, main stand, suitcase and socket, were also popular. Of the two available handlebar stubs and discs, the higher variant was chosen – for the sake of comfort.
The rear of the 11 series had a 5-inch wheel with 170-mm tires as standard, 5.5-inch tires and a more tightly tuned suspension from Ohlins were available for an extra charge. With the narrower rim, the S is much more manageable. Measured against the long production time, little has changed apart from the colors. In 2001, the partially integral ABS with brake booster was introduced, and in 2003 there was double ignition to reduce the constant drive jolt.
In Germany alone, almost 15,000 units found buyers, most of which seem to be hanging around at www.s-boxer.de. There is endless information there. Even after all night browsing, there are hardly any weak points in the boxer, apart from leaky oil seals and frequent problems with the ABS function when the battery is running down and occasional problems with the cardan drive. The BMW also did well in the HP endurance test (4/2001) over 54,000 kilometers. Apart from a broken throttle cable and a tattered poly belt for the alternator drive, there were no failures. The mechanics are also largely unimpressed by the mileage. In 1998 and 1999 there was one recall each, concerning the handlebar attachment and the fuel line, but these should have been completed by now.
Two things are important for those interested in buying a used vehicle: First of all, it is important to clarify whether you can basically make friends with BMW’s peculiarities. Keyword Telelever, partially integral ABS, three-button indicator actuation, rustic gear. This can only be found out by taking a long drive. If that fits, it’s about the desired equipment. With the wide range, you should be able to find the model you want. The further urge for individualization of the sports boxer fans is mostly limited to Kevlar knick-knacks and other exhaust systems. However, a test in MOTORRAD 4/2002 showed that the original is the best when it comes to performance. From around 4500 euros you can call an 11 your own.

The BMW 1200 S..
R 1200 S
With the 2006 presented R 1200 S BMW undertook the first halfway serious attempt by a real athlete. Seriously because it was probably the first time in the company’s history that a motorcycle was offered without an optional pannier system. Furthermore, the pillion seat by no means met the usual Bavarian standards. And the delay was neither partially integrated nor amplified, and the ABS, which is subject to a surcharge, could be switched off.
When operating on closed one-way streets, this option is sorely necessary, because the brake assistant is programmed in such a way that he fears a rollover when the rear wheel is gently lifted off and this reduces the pressure. In order to experience this phenomenon, a forced deceleration on undulating terrain is enough on this side of the border area.
The athlete’s endeavor was also half-hearted because under the given conditions (air-cooled boxer engine, cardan drive) the prerequisites for a serious racing sandwich were simply not there. The mostly red-clad, Italian competition offered a good 20 hp more with a lower weight. Not to mention the Japanese. From the customer’s point of view, the 12 series was neither fish nor meat. After three years and almost 6,200 units sold worldwide, around 2,100 of them in Germany, it was over again.
As always with BMW, these buyers were spoiled for choice: 5.5 or 6 inch rear wheel, equivalent to 180 or 190 tires, ABS, Ohlins chassis, heated grips etc. what must, what can, what is definitely not possible. The range is quite large despite the manageable inventory. At the time of the research, there were around 60 bikes on www.mobile.de alone. If the relevant Internet forums are to be believed, then the 12 series hardly gives cause for complaint, apart from the occasional loss of oil on oil seals of any kind and the occasional electronic whine.
Regardless of this, 12-person drivers are a very communicative bunch – immersing yourself in the sensitivities of the community easily breaks the annual vacation. If you want to have a 12-man sports boxer, you have to pay at least 7,000 euros. The mileage is then a good 20,000 kilometers. There are still a few demonstrators at the dealerships who are supposed to bring around 12,000 euros. The rest is somewhere in between. The equipment quota with ABS is almost 100 percent, around 80 percent are on the Ohlins sports suspension.

positive
Lots of factory accessories available, low consumption, space suitable for long-distance passengers, too. Very quickly under an expert hand, as the Boxer Cup has proven.
negative
Not really an athlete, due to Telelever hardly any feedback from the front, partially integral ABS – if available – takes a lot of getting used to.

positive
Very handy and precise driving behavior, successful overall gear ratio conceals mediocre engine performance in part, very high suitability for everyday use, high value retention despite sporty attitude.
negative
Inharmonious power development, pithy vibrations, ABS regulates sometimes much too early, transmission is difficult to shift.
